DDOGGEREL  Thank you for making it clear (if not explicit) that your motivation for posting is simply to defend CDFinder from ANY criticism, regardless of the substantive nature of that criticism.

I had in my comment explicitly stated that I consider the app to be best in class, so it would have seemed to be clear that I was not making my criticism lightly or with malice. Considering that you continue to fail to disagree with my complaint, it would appear to be clear that you are specifically in favor of a GUI which unnecessarily wastes large amounts of space. I really have a hard time fathoming the mindset of a person who actually prefers this.

As for key shortcuts: unless you are denying that some of these have changed with v5, then you have no grounds for disagreeing with my complaint that they have changed.

Sheesh.

DDOGGEREL  You say that you disagree with what I wrote, and yet, when it comes to it, you express no explicit disagreements with any of my substantive complaints.

My issue is with wasted space in the headers and with the arrangement of text (interline spacing, indentation, etc). "Sleekness" is not bought at the expense of display efficiency.

The closest you came to addressing this issue was the reference to the fact that one can collapse the right pane in the main window. Well, then, in the name of display efficiency, you should defend the fact that this window cannot be resized to a reasonable width (its minimum seems to be around 500 pixels), resulting in: a very large amount of useless space within the window.

The additional issue I mentioned is that some key shortcuts were changed. The fact that there is a current shortcut for the one command I mentioned is not grounds for disagreement. The fact that this new shortcut is not listed in the menu next to the command is an additional problem.

If, as I suspect, that your disagreement is due to the fact that you actually *like* wasted space in your GUIs, then you should make that clear.

DDOGGEREL  I've used ealier versions extensively, and found it very useful (especially the ability to change file/folder names within the catalog for items stored on optical media). I don't know of a better program on OSX for cataloging large numbers of discs.

However, I find that the new v5.x interface is off-putting enough that I have been sticking with v4.7 for a while now. My biggest complaint is that the display within the windows is extremely inefficient, with tons of wasted space everywhere (huge indentation and tab values, large interline spacing, very large "header" area on all windows, unnecessary and undefeatable pane interface on the main window, etc). An additional annoyance is the fact that some key commands have changed or been removed (eg in versions up through 4.7, cmd-minus would navigate one level up, whereas in v5.x it shrinks the text & icon size).

To a certain extent, this inefficiency in the graphical display of data and window structure is endemic to the latest developments of OSX (which itself is a shame), but I think that even within those parameters, things could be greatly improved with CDFinder.
