COOLFACTOR Thanks for responding so quickly to my last question, Jolly. I tried using JollysFastVNC to connect to a VNC server over the Internet, but it didn't work. It has only worked on a machine on the same subnet. It did ask for the password, but then nothing happened. Is this a known issue? (Version 0.92)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK nope, that is not known. It normally works. It is known though that some servers can't cope with the update requests they are getting. Send me an e-mail as I do not look here in regular intervals. Regards - Jolly aka Patrick (Version 0.92)

COOLFACTOR I've just successfully connected to another Mac and this client is nice and fast. I would like to know why it's called "Jollys Fast" rather than "Jolly Fast"... why the extra "s" on the end of "Jolly"? Signed, nitpicker (Version 0.92)

COOLFACTOR Sure looks like they put a lot of work into "re-inventing" the Mac interface. What's with two close buttons per "window"? Windows thinking and interface approaches doesn't work on this side of the fence. (Version 2.2)

COOLFACTOR I was considering downloading this program, but the reactive comments from the developer turned me right on. Remember that people can be just as incompatible as software is. Don't let a few negative comments be a reason to post such personal judgments as "I think you're an arrogant idiot". I'll look elsewhere. (Version 1.65b6)

HMURCHISON This program is his labor of love. Feedback is certainly warranted but it must be constructive. Considering the experience of Jameskitty it would have been nice for us all to get suggestions about how the UI for iRatchet could be improved sans the accusatory prose. A little passion coming from the developer is actually pretty unique. I like that vigor myself. (Version 1.66)

COOLFACTOR I have v1.1.3 installed, which has a "Check for Update" feature. I'm surprised they included that as a "new feature" for v1.1.6. Anyway, when I clicked the button, it said there was no updates available. Come on Dolby, if you're going to play in the Mac arena, you'd better get your ducks in a row... experience is everything here. (Version 1.1.6)

COOLFACTOR No whining intended. Just observations. If the developer is serious about delivering a Mac application, then deliver one. Don't deliver a half-heart hack-job just to support multiple platforms. That's no way to garner a loyal user base. As an development myself, interface design is critical, and AbleFTP falls down badly on that aspect regardless of the programming environment used. (Version 7.23)

COOLFACTOR Downloaded... it mounted a disk image called "Trail 2.1". Small details are important to Mac users. On that note, what is with the menus??? A lot of work and cleanup is needed there before this can be considered a worthwhile application. It's more than functionality, it's about user experience. My experience has been poor. CASCADEHUSH The files are large because they contain the voice data. High quality voices for TTS applications are typically larger than 100MB. If the voices are as good as they say, then the product is worth the price for the voices along. Personally I'm still searching and haven't evaluated this product yet. (Version 1.0.1)

Transmit | Oct 12 2006 |
COOLFACTOR Transmit has been my favorite FTP program of all that I've used on both Mac and Windows. I've found the developer's responsiveness to my emails to be hit'n'miss. One week, I'll get 3 or 4 replies, but then nothing for weeks. However, their commitment to excellence and periodic updates continues to impress me. My money has been well-spent, and I plan on upgrading to their next major release. (Version 3.5.5)

COOLFACTOR So, this app basically changes the location of the StickiesDatabase file from the Library folder to the iDisk. That can be done with a symlink, too. Guess a gui app makes it easier for average users. (Version 1.0)

SESQUIPEDALIAN Actually, it can't be done with a symlink. Stickies deletes and recreates the StickiesDatabase every time it updates the contents, and for whatever reason it doesn't follow symlinks. Instead, it deletes the symlink and writes a new copy of the StickiesDatabase in its place. (Version 1.2.2)

iDefrag | Sep 21 2006 |
COOLFACTOR Mac OS x has built-in defragging every time a file is saved. That aspect is unnecessary by a third-party utility. In the developer's favor, it looks like they've added some advanced features that may provide some benefit to users, but plain-old defragging is not one of them. (Version 1.5.2)

CHRIS SUTER It's true that Mac OS X does a better job of defragmenting than other operating systems, but there are times when defragmenting will make a difference: when your free space is heavily fragmented for example. iDefrag also sorts files which can provide a benefit. These issues are addressed on our web site: http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag-2.php (Version 1.5.2)

AbleFtp8 | Jul 30 2006 |
COOLFACTOR The developer hasn't bothered to build a native Mac OS X application. It may run on the platform, and appears like a Mac application, but the application has many shortfalls that will only hurt its adoption. - menubar on the window rather than at the top of the screen - multiple toolbars, none of which are the standard type - blank window of first run - spacing of window elements is awkward and ugly One interesting observation is that the download is only 6MB for the Mac, but 22MB or over for Windows or Linux. I also have to commend the developer on the integrated Feedback window. If this application is going to garner any loyalty, they'll rewrite it as a Cocoa application, or at least fix some of the shortfalls. The app has potential. (Version 7.07)

KRYSTOF VASA I'm not the developer, but I'm gonna say this: All the stuff that you mentioned can't really be done anything with. Unfortunately. I haven't downloaded it, but I bet it is some ugly kind of Java and that is I think already enough to say. Java is a nice idea of crossplatform development, which works, but sucks - it's painfully slow, (at least on OS X) doesn't look right (the windows aren't composite) and the controls' behavior is usually not as we're used to. This is the huge disadvantage of this app. However, there is an advantage: it's available for 3 platforms at the same time. That's why the dev is never going to rewrite it in Cocoa. First off - he might not even own a Mac! He would have to learn a new language and that would commit him to one platform. If he's going after profit, the most profitable platform would be (I guess) Windows... Unfortunately. So we have to deal with what we have here and not wine about what we don't have... There are many cool native (written in Cocoa) FTP clients for OS X which you may use instead. (Version 7.23)

COOLFACTOR This application is a real charm. It does what it aims to with a simple interface. I'd like to be able to double-click on a message that it reports and see the source code directly where it's pointing out a problem, but even without that, this app rocks! (Version 2.0)

ITOD47 COOLFACTOR, I think that's a 'cool' idea. Watch for this soon. You know that if you are parsing a local document, you can currently double click a warning or error item in the list and BBEdit will open the source document with that line selected. I need to generalize this to your text editor of choice. (Version 2.0)

COOLFACTOR This is amazing. Someone actually spends time writing an application to avoid paying for another application that is commonly used for illegal purposes anyway. I happen to have purchased a license for Acquisition, because it is exemplary as software engineering on the Mac platform, of which I'm committed to supporting. Pay your $17.99 and then you can sleep soundly. Don't spend your time ripping people off. David deserves to be compensated for his hard work. (Version 1.0)

COOLFACTOR To the developer: Please adhere to the user interface standards of OS X. You should use a standard toolbar along the top of your window, and you don't need a separate Preferences button, although it could be a toolbar button. Having it listed in the application menu is important, though. (Version 1.0.1)

COOLFACTOR This looks like a promising application, but I strongly suggest to the developer that they don't build the menubar into the window for the OS X distro. If they seriously want to attract Mac buyers, they should support the UI of the platform as closely as possible. And what's with all the group boxes? Those are just plain ugly. (Version 2.2)

TED WOOD I've known one of the developers for almost a year now, and I've never met anyone more passionate about the work that he does. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he poured his heart into this application to make it work for YOU. He wanted to give you the best possible experience he could for sending SMS messages. Don't be so quick to judge others. If you feel you need to send me comments directly, I've provided my email address, unlike others posting comments, I'm not afraid of discussing this like adults.
