CONROY.R  Thinking different for biomedical researchers

For anyone in the biomedical field this application fills a very important role: keeping a library of PDF documents linked to their PubMed references, and allowing you to manage, index and read them in comfort.

The last point is actually very important. For the first time, here's an application that uses my whole screen to read PDFs, preventing me from having to print them off and leave them somewhere.

The PubMed integration is very well thought out. The integration with EndNote (the Windows of bibliographic database management) is also vital. At present, you can import and export, but clearly Papers needs to be able to synchronise with EndNote libraries.

For the price, this is a gem. When you consider the cost of EndNote (those regular, trivial and expensive "upgrades") this looks like a really honest piece of work!

G*Power
Mar 1 2007
*****

CONROY.R  This release marks a huge increase in the capability of G*Power, which now calculates for wide variety of designs. It is based on the notion of an effect size, and one of the useful features is its ability to calculate effect size from descriptive statistics and then transfer the result to the calculation of sample size.

For many researchers, G*Power will be sufficient to see if your potential sample size will have a reasonable chance of capturing the effect you are looking for (assuming the effect exists!). The interface design makes calculations rapid and simple.

The help files are online, and look well structured. Unfortunately, not all help topics are yet complete.

Of course, if you don't know what sample size software should do, the application will make no sense to you!

***..

CONROY.R  A beautiful application that takes much trouble to tell you how useless it is! It doesn't tell you the time, just what the time might have been if we were using the traditional Japanese system, no longer used even in Japan.

I rather like having it running, and watching the sun travel overhead...

It doesn't work behind my proxy server in work, so I can only use it at home. And the routine for setting your co-ordinates is a little cumbersome. But it's for nix!

GNUMail.app

CONROY.R  I really don't see the point of developing a mail application to replace the free mail application that comes with the Mac if it doesn't do amazing things that Mail.app doesn't do.

And with 10.5, the competition will have gone out of GNUMail's league.

MJHAMSON  To the previous poster: catch a clue and read the information before posting. This is a *nix project with a mac port.

As much as I love mail.app, it has its limitation and shortcomings. If someone feels compelled to do better - we (the community) should encourage them.

CONROY.R  Won't open anything

WordPad doesn't recognise any of the plain text files on my machine as openable. When I trick it into trying to open them, it tells me it can't open files created by BBEdit.

Hmmm... These guys make Burn, which is first rate software. This app can only get better, but better wait until then.

CONROY.R  It's hard to see why you would pay money for something that TextWrangler will do for you for nothing...
