TunesBar
Feb 8 2009
****.

COLOURGRAVITY  This is exactly what I've been looking for for ages: a simple, non-scrolling way of showing the title and artist of the current track in the menu bar without any unnecessary additional bells and whistles.

To make this my perfect app, I'd like to have the ability to alter the separating character (currently a dot) between track title and artist name, and I'd like it if the app opened and closed automatically when iTunes opens and closes (although I get around that at the moment using iKey to achieve the same thing).

Even as it is, though, TunesBar is an app I wouldn't be without.

COLOURGRAVITY  Really handy little app. So far it's made entering new iCal events much easier and quicker than going through iCal itself. And it's free. What more could we ask?

COLOURGRAVITY  I've tried Keyboard Maestro, Spark and QuicKeys but none of them have done exactly what I need in exactly the way that suits me. iKey does.

I'm running it on Leopard with no problems at all (so far) and I have to say, despite an earlier reviewer's comments on a confusing interface, I've found the app straightforward and intuitive to use. I can't comment on the documentation because I haven't yet needed to consult it.

iKey is very versatile and it allows me to work on my Mac in the way I like rather than the way other applications dictate (using the same keyboard commands for the same function across a range of applications where the commands would normally differ, single key opening and closing of applications etc). I've also been able to set up complex, multi-step macros which save me valuable time and spare me a lot of frustration.

Access to recent applications/documents and system preference panes from the menu bar is a useful bonus.

iKey is just what I've been looking for. It's more expensive than Keyboard Maestro or (the free) Spark, but for me it's worth the money.

LARAINE  iKey doesn't appear to be what I'm looking for. I bought Keyboard Maestro because at least it allowed me to open applications using the keyboard commands I used to use in OS 9 with Action Utilities, and I didn't need a manual to work out how to do it. But I still long for something Action Utilities did, and did so well (allowing me to choose an item from the menu and type my own shortcut for it, even if it didn't originally have a shortcut). Photoshop (version 7 anyway) really bugs me in that so many things have to be done using the mouse. For instance, to choose the plug-in for my scanner I have to go to the file men, choose import and then choose CanoScan 8400F. Grr!

COLOURGRAVITY  Great little app. Does just what it says with the minimum of fuss. I'm another one who used to use Paparazzi. That worked very well, but it's just so much easier to have capturing built directly into Safari. The range of output formats offered is also very useful. Well worth the $8.

iTunes Current Song Menu
Dec 20 2006

COLOURGRAVITY  This is almost exactly what I've been looking for. The only change I'd welcome to make it perfect would be to show nothing at all in the menu bar except when iTunes is actually playing (rather than leaving the icon or app name up there after iTunes quits, as it does at the moment).

COLOURGRAVITY  Love it. Just what I've been looking for to keep my to-dos constantly visible but unobtrusive, and remind me of up-coming deadlines. Nice way of displaying the current track in iTunes, too.

The only feature missing for me is the ability to run Stattoo without a dock icon.

Smart Scroll

****½

COLOURGRAVITY  This latest update seems to have fixed all the problems I had with the previous version. No more crashes with Rosetta apps after disabling the Rosetta cache (I can live with the slight consequent delay in opening some apps), and scrolling works just as advertised. Great.

I'd have bought this for the addition of scrolling in Filemaker 7 alone, but it's also made a big improvement to overall ease of use that's well worth the price to me.

Smart Scroll

COLOURGRAVITY  Comments apply to Smart Scroll on a Mac Pro.

I love the effortless scrolling, and it makes a big difference to be able to scroll in Filemaker 7 at last but, unfortunately, I have too many clashes with Rosetta apps (apps crashing or refusing to open) to be able to keep Smart Scroll running. I can fix the problem temporarily by running the Rosetta tune-up included with the Smart Scroll installer, but I have to run it again it every time I re-open any of the affected apps, and that's just not practical.

I've paid for Smart Scroll in the hope that this problem will be resolved in future versions, because - when it works - it's something that really does make navigating through pages easier and more fun.

COLOURGRAVITY  Great app - really useful - but broken since the Quicktime 7.1.3 update. Hopefully the developer's working on a fix...

SVEN JANSSEN  Broken?

i have not received any emails that CocoThumbX does not work with QT 7.1.3.

And i've got no problem on my own iMac G5 using CTX with the newest QT version.

And please do not post any feedback about crashes here. Send me an email with the crashreport to my account.
