CHRISCHRAM  I dunno whose fault it is, but the bottom line is that at least one site I go to frequently does not work at all with version 10, but downgrading back to version 9 makes everything nice again.

The big feature of version 10 is supposed to be better security. I guess not working at all is the best security ever.

CHRISCHRAM  If I ever navigate to a site that requires Silverlight, that'll be the time I decide whether to install it or just never go back to that site. Flash is bad enough, what with many sites thinking I need to see their cute intro movie before I'm allowed to enter. For now, Just Say No to Silverlight.

CHRISCHRAM  I wrote that scary WARNING below about the previous version of this package. I was assured by the developers that whatever happened to my system shouldn't have been caused by their product. Still wary, and after a sufficient passage of time, I plucked up the courage to try another installation. Not one single problem! Running a backup before installing new stuff is still a good idea though.

I just installed this new version. The installer does a logout after it's done. When I got the Finder back, everything was running like thick mud, but after a proper restart, the system was backup to speed, if not a bit faster. My X11 applications seem much peppier than before.

CHRISCHRAM  I tested this application with two .wmv files I had lying around, one less than 2-minutes and medium/poor quality and one 18-minutes and very high quality. Using something close to the default settings, the short clip converted to a very washed-out .mp4 file of much worse quality than the original and the long clip churned for over an hour and produced no output at all. This application is not ready for prime-time.

CHRISCHRAM  This widget is just the ticket for those of us planning a trip to Mars, but wondering how to pack. HINT: bring a coat.

But seriously, my Dashboard is so full-up, I opted for the Phoenix project's Google Gadget that does the same thing. The Project also has an interesting screensaver. Check 'em all out.

CHRISCHRAM  It's nice to finally see a comics widget that works in Leopard. I'd used Say Cheese for awhile, and was unhappy when it self-destructed.

One negative: User Friendly is missing.

On another note: I looked at the JavaScript inside this widget to see where it was finding the black and white version of Dilbert, but could make no sense of it. Who out there knows where on the web this version is available. I find the color strip at dilbert.com to be unnecessary eye-candy.

JMH1  I, just today, noticed a particular CD track encoded in itunes 7.5 with a number of drop-outs. I tried rencoding again making sure error correction box was checked. Both ACC and MP3 in iTunes 7.5.x were goofed up again.

iTunes 4.7.1 encoded this CD fine.

And.. Good News...iTunes 7.6 encoded this track fine!

So perhaps a bug was fixed...

Weather Underground Widget
Sep 13 2007
**...

CHRISCHRAM  I'd really like to like this widget, but it's just too unstable. I like the way it can find independent weather stations, though the forcasts appear to still come from "official" weather stations. My biggest problem is that this widget can rarely survive a computer restart without losing its settings, and the settings cannot be restored because something in the plist file or the widget itself gets corrupted. I don't want to have to delete all traces and reinstall this thing just to get it working again.

MacProgramGuide

****.

CHRISCHRAM  I have used MacProgramGuide since the start, and I find it to be infinitely more useful than the online sites. That said, nobody likes to pay for something that was previously free. I signed up for the first quarter of service from schedulesdirect with the hope that the price would drop if they got enough subscriptions. (I believe schedulesdirect is shooting for a price of $20/year if this thing catches on. That's not too bad.) If the second quarter price remains at $15, I'm afraid I'll have to look elsewhere for my TV listings. Right now I find both Zap2it and TitanTV to be useless.

CHRISCHRAM  You don't have to wait for an Intel version of this app. it's quite easy to compile. Just download the source code from the dev's website, in Terminal navigate to the source code's folder, type make. That Easy. (You must have Xcode installed for this magic to work.)

Double-click the archive to unzip and untar it. In Terminal type 'cd' (without the quites) and a space, then drag the 'ManOpen-2.5.1' folder to the terminal window, then . Type 'make' . In a few seconds you will find ManOpen.app and openman in the folder. Drag ManOpen.app to somewhere you keep your Applications. Drag openman to somewhere in your PATH. You're done.

CHRISCHRAM  iTerm opens all new windows and tabs transparent. Maybe it's just me, but I do not like transparent windows, and have to hit Cmd-U after opening each new tab. I once had the same model of scanner you have, and Vuescan worked quite well on it.

CHRISCHRAM  This version is compiled as a Universal Binary, but on my Intel iMac it quits suddenly and unceremoniously part way through booting from my OS 8 CD. CHRISCHRAM  I was so impressed by the demos of iData 2 that I scrapped it and bought a license for iData 1. Why? Datafiles with simple plain text data, such as those generated by the late, great IngoGenie, balloon up to enormous size under iData 2. Look at an iData 2 file with BBEdit and you'll see why. Each record's metadata is up to 10 times the size of the actual data you're storing. YMMV of course, but iData 1 works for me while iData 2 is just plain overkill.
