Type: ReviewDate: 18 Apr 2008 08:18I have tried pretty much all the "type expander" programs (TextExpander, TypeIt4Me, etc).
Typinator is the king of the hill.
First it is a program (unlike TextExpander and Typeit4me) which means its more flexible and doesn't have the constraints of a System Preference.
It seems "speedier" than the other expanders and it seems much more stable than the current version TextExpander (who should take a lesson on what customer service should be from these guys).
Loads up with out a hitch, a small learning curve, and has work flawlessly.
This is my new "must have upon getting a new Mac" program.

Type: ReviewDate: 18 Apr 2008 08:11TextExpander used to be one of those "when
you first get your Mac, get this program", programs.
Though it has gone downhill since the release of OS X 10.5.
The more snippets you have the slower it gets, to the point that it was crashing my System Preferences pane.
I wrote in to the developer for this and the other annoying problem which is that with PTHPasteboard, TextExpander will "go nuts" specifically that as you type along, what is stored in memory starts to type all on its own, again. Very annoying in an iChat session.
So when I did write into the developer with these problems there solution was "Uninstall PTHPasteboard"
That is an unacceptable answer. A better solution/suggestion would have been "Thanks for the info, there is a probelm between TextExpander and PTHPasteboard, we are working on a solution".
In the past I would have recommended this product but now I can't. The spinning beach ball of death doesn't help its case either and have turned to Typinator which works, and seems much faster than TextExpander.

Type: ReviewDate: 10 Apr 2008 21:19I got to see this program in action at Macworld 2007 and darn neared drooled over it.
This is the beginning and the end if you have to take screen shots and then upload them.
It also can make simple quick edits that can be uploaded not only to its own site (Skitch) but also Flickr and .mac.
No this isn't photo shop, if you need to get something up quick and dirty this program does the job and does it extremely well.

Type: ReviewDate: 10 Apr 2008 21:15Making a change to a pdf file has never been easier. I have been using PDFPen Pro for a couple of years now and it has never let me down.
Currently I need to make annotations to about 75 pdf type files a month and this program makes it a snap.
Its simple, fast, cheap and best of all, easy.

Type: ReviewDate: 6 Nov 2007 11:14Latest update does same thing as
previous reviewer. When turning on
the "mail count" GmailStatus
disappears from the menu
bar. It is there technically
just hidden from view.
Also had problems with signing
into my account even though I am
using the correct password and
user name (I checked and confirmed)

Type: ReviewDate: 16 May 2007 10:13Run don't walk AWAY from this
company. No user support (other than automated e-mail messages). Not Mac like in any way shape or form.
Consistently posting "updates" when nothing has been updated, hence this product shows up every two weeks on the update sites. (this must be how they advertise the product).
Tried this and was floored by how, forgive me, crappy this product is. If I could give it zero stars for value I would.

Type: ReviewDate: 2 Mar 2007 10:00iEyeCaptain has been and will be a lifesaver for me!
During the "dark times" of Tivo not supporting the Mac community by providing TivoToGo for Macs, iEyeCaptain (along with EyeTV and an IR Blaster) still provides an alternative to Tivo, ReplayTV and homebrewed PVRs.
Set up is easy. Using it is even easier. Developer has always responded with great info or troubleshooting tips (I had one small problem and Graham responded straight away).
I understand Graham not developing this anymore (I wish he would continue but I understand), still with iEye Captain and EyeTV I have a better and cheaper solution to Tivo.
Oh my Tivo now is pretty much a back up drive for those I want to record something else at the same time.

Type: ReviewDate: 18 Jan 2007 10:50Last reviewer got it right. Purchased and used Hawkeye for a bit before realizing that it was a combination of about 2 or 3 different small programs.
I can rip using Handbrake or Mac the Ripper and convert them using Visual Hub into any format I want. Burning since I have Toast that part is covered.
The program is well put together, it does have an interesting interface. Documentation though is a bit lacking (IMHO).
For me this was a "eh" program. If you can use and understand a couple of other program (and I know that there are some free programs that will do what Visual Hub and Toast will do) than save your money or use it to purchase something else.
If you are looking for the all in one version than this could possibly be for you.

Type: ReviewDate: 4 Jan 2007 14:28Ok lets try this again. The reason there isn't a review in my last post is that ShapeShifter crashed, thereby loosing what work I had done.
The APE is a memory hog, it tends to crash when it feels like it and if you are using VirtueDesk (and in the future Spaces) the "theme" isn't applied to all the desktops/spaces.
Support can be summed up as pretty much non-exsistant (least when I asked the few questions).
I got this on the love it/hate it MacHiest holiday buy...if only I had known.

Type: ReviewDate: 11 Dec 2006 09:42Ok love this thing!
Was using the tivodecode command line function and not that I minded that but this makes things so much easier!
A great program that...well two weeks ago wasn't possible!
One request though; I don't remember if the 1.0 version of the program had this or not but would love to see some type of progress bar/indicator. Just to let us know that it is working vice checking to see if the file size is increasing through Finder.

Type: ReviewDate: 4 Dec 2006 10:05Unlike other reviews here, have never had a problem getting a response from the developer when I had a problem or comment.
Ya there are free versions of disk burning software out there but have had many more problems getting a response from that developer than I ever had with Disco.
It is basic. There are those times where you don't want need all the bells and whistles to create a disk.
Drag. Drop. Burn. DONE!
Eye candy is a nice add on for Disco but the ease of use far outweighs that.
Having a history list of disk you have burned just adds to what I think is a wonderful app.

Type: ReviewDate: 1 Nov 2006 13:15Yes this is a basic sound editor. It also beats Audacity hands down.
Simple to use, very intuitive. What else would one expect from Rouge Amoeba. If all you are doing is simple editing (cut, splice) then this is for you.
Find it use it more than GarageBand for the quick and dirty jobs.

Type: ReviewDate: 25 Sep 2006 11:37I have no idea how but not having any of the problems with iTunes 7.0.
It installed flawlessly and is working just fine. I did a clean install (deleted iTunes 6.? and the following plists:
com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist
com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist)
I also don't have any third party plug ins

Type: ReviewDate: 13 Sep 2006 21:28Well I have played with Xcast for about the last 15 minutes and I can tell you right now that...
It will be replacing iPodderX (aka Transistr) on my system and will make a serious run at Juice.
First any developer who takes the time to make a screen cast of how his product works is one step ahead of the game. I even used this screen cast to solve a problem vice using the help menu (I had forgotten how to automatically have the downloaded feeds appear in iTunes).
It was simple to set up, has smart lists (the best one being a downloading smart list), intergration with iTunes 7 (so it was ahead of the curve) and has a feature to clean out podcasts/video podcasts that you have listened to.
I hope Zeno doesn't decide to charge for this but if he ever put up a donation button I would gladly send him 20 buck for this.
I can't recommend this piece of software enough.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 6 Sep 2006 10:00hmmmm me thinks that iPodderX, in its rebranding as Trasistr, has now reached the stage of....
VAPORWARE.
With Transistr now being 6 months overdue from its projected release, and almost no support for iPodderX I can't recommend this product at all.

Type: ReviewDate: 15 Aug 2006 11:09I think somone already stated this but,
WOW! I will say it again WOW! Honestly what BootCamp should have been.
After dealing with Vitural PC and running that on my iMac (G5 2gb of RAM, 250Gb hard drive), this was a joy to use.
I started out with the trial version, which you can use for 30 days, no turned off features.
Installed without a hiccup. Ran for first time the same way. Loaded OpenSuSe Linux and it ran at or nearly native speeds. I have tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu, OpenSuse, and Knoppix. All worked beautifully. My Windows install went the same way and ran at nearly native speeds and ran faster than my old Windoze PC. Haven't had a problem with Parallels.
2 Days later I purchased it and haven't regretted it for a second.
Even with Apple saying that BootCamp will be included in Leopard, I would still buy this. No rebooting to use it and "it does Windows" plus a whole lot more

Type: ReviewDate: 23 May 2006 10:27M$ Office without all the bloat! (in price or "add ons")
While rewritting an instruction manual/student guide I finally gave up on Office for Mac and tried this. Worked flawlessly! There were some minor reformatting issues when I sent it from my Mac to my work account but they were few and far between. Once I figured out how to avoid those I haven't looked back and removed my legal copy of M$ Office and have used NeoOffice ever since.
The presentation side works wonderfully as does the spreadsheet.
It takes up far less room on my hard drive and the support (community) is fantastic. I had a question concerning a spreadsheet and had an answer back to it, again from the support community, in less than 10 mins.
So far I haven't found any bugs in this alpha release. Did have to go through the set up process even though I have been running NeoOffice for about six months. Not a big deal though.
It cheap and it works!
If you are looking for an alternative to Office without the hassle of installing X11 for OpenOffice, this is your software.

Type: ReviewDate: 17 Apr 2006 14:00This is an app that after getting the updates for a new mac and loading LaunchBar (or Butler whichever app launcher I am fond of at the moment) THIS is the app I always (or will be) loading next.
I haven't had any problem with it at all. It does get rid of stray files that are left when you drag an app to the trash (the plist leaps to mind right now).
It won't let you delete an application that is currently open. I don't know if that is the problems others were having but I haven't encountered an app that AppZapper didn't like to zap.
I love this application.
Its stable, easy to use and a great value.

Type: ReviewDate: 7 Apr 2006 10:04Have tried a couple of irc chat clients and this one is the best hands down.
Good graphical interface.
Easy set up compared to other IRC clients (compared to Newspeak, X-Chat Aqua, Conversation).
I had it installed and running in about 3 mins.
Haven't had a problem with it yet but I haven't tried DCC yet either but when I set it up it looked like it was working properly.

Type: ReviewDate: 24 Feb 2006 13:48Probably worse than GyazMail in terms of look, feel and options.
No IMAP. (Honestly you shouldn't waste a users time if you don't support it. Yes I know everyone doesn't need it but a majority of us do).
No option to even turn on HTML contents.
you want how much for this.
BareBones has some pretty good stuff (Yojimbo, and TextWrangler) but Mailsmith isn't some of the good stuff

Type: ReviewDate: 24 Feb 2006 00:22eh!
Have tried GyazMail a couple of times and always wind up leaving for Mail.
First, no IMAP (yes there are many of us that use it and it a mail program doesn't have it, its a deal breaker). Wasn't happy about the design of the interface, lack of developer support (noted that myself along with other reviewers).
Setup was ok, not as easy as other Mail programs.
All in all it just didn't "feel" right

Type: ReviewDate: 15 Feb 2006 13:03As said before a year late and a dollar short.
This "update" from the folks at Tivo only address "sharing" music and photos from your Mac to your Tivo Box.
It does nothing to address TivoToGo.
But but Tivo swears its on its way.
Pretty much given up on Tivo delivering that and have gone with Galleon, though getting the files through Galleon to burn on to a cd or to put on my iPod involves a couple of extra steps, at least its something.

Type: ReviewDate: 7 Feb 2006 09:44Hate when that happens.
Application is ok, middle of the road didn't "blow me away".
Have tried pretty much all of the video to iPod converstion programs out there. I happen to be partial to Podner I like batching the files to convert.
If you aren't will to drop a few dollars on Podner this will do the job.

Type: ReviewDate: 26 Jan 2006 20:42Mea culpa, Mea culpa, Mea culpa
After getting assistance direct from the developer, and not being able to delete or edit my original feedback on Spell Catcher X I will put a new one up.
Works as advertised (once I learned what I was doing was incorrect).
One small minor bug in this the beta version but think that maybe again something I am doing.
Honestly the support I got from Rainmaker Research has been outstanding! and had I been thinking that is where I should have gone with my problem first.
So as it says at the top Mea culpa.

Type: ReviewDate: 25 Jan 2006 09:55Wouldn't recommend this software if you are using a "launcher program" (Butler, Quicksilver or LaunchBar).
I tried using it with all three to see if I got the same results and even after placing each of the programs into "ignore" file (sorry I can't remember what the option was but it will set those programs up with their own special spelling rules), I still got the annoying warnings about mis-spellings. Since with each of the launcher applications you are typing part of the word and then hitting enter, Spell Catcher thinks that the word is spelled incorrectly.
I wound up removing the program.
If you aren't using one of the above programs it is a fairly good program but not at the advertised price.
