BOBSTER Oops, the aforementioned decompression actually took longer than I had originally thought... was actually stuck at 99.9% for about 20 minutes. But it's still good to have this program around for the rare time you need it these days. (Version 11.0.2)

BOBSTER Just bought a new Mac mini (2 GHz quad core) and tried Stuffit Expander out on a huge (2.5 GB) file that, amazingly, uncompressed a LOT faster than I thought it would. Maybe the new Mac was a factor too, but I wasn't expecting that kind of speed. Good work on this version. (Version 11.0.2)

BOBSTER It's remarkable how fast this little app will fly through a series of images. Did 105 vidcaps in a few seconds, very nice. It would be excellent if, like Photoshop's Contact Sheet maker, you could have a small visual preview of the image dimensions. I'm looking forward to any updates. (Version 1.0)

BOBSTER I seem to have cleared up some of the slowness problem: by eliminating my profile and starting from scratch. (If you do this yourself, remember to grab your 'bookmarks.html' file first!) Other problems persist, but at least there is some stability restored. (Version 2.0.0.6)

BOBSTER As of version 2, FireFox has been plagued with instability. Most notably, about half of the time, page loading comes to a halt and simply will not continue. Giving FF the benefit of the doubt (perhaps it's the sites?), I then try opening the same sites/pages using Safari, and they load in a jiffy. WTH???? FireFox never had these kind of fundamental screwups before v2. I don't understand! What went wrong Mozilla? (Version 2.0.0.6)

Virtual PC | Aug 20 2007 |
BOBSTER Well, I've been mucking with Virtual PC 7 for a few days, but there are things about it that lead me to believe MS is not interested in making a fast emulator. Come to think of it, why would they? Since they acquired Connectix a few years ago (the creators of Virtual PC and that awesome Playstation emulator, among others), I can only conclude MS doesn't want to put any real effort into making VPC a great product, since ultimately it is serving the 'enemy' Mac users. Of course, now that the newer Macs are Intel-based and can run Windoze, that hammers the nail in the coffin I would think. I'm glad that Connectix created this product, it's helped on a few occasions. But one thing I cannot abide the slowness. VPC7 thinks I have a 532MHz CPU when it's actually 1 GHz, and by default the video card is an S3Trio32/64 'legacy' card, when I actually have an ATI Radeon 9600. VRAM can only be set max 16MB, but my Radeon has 256MB. Surely in this update, the hardware defaults could have been upgraded? My Mac is 4 years old, and a Radeon 9600 is not exactly new... Anyway, there is the main problem: the OS itself LOL but let's not go there. (Version 7.0.3)

MPEG Streamclip | May 30 2007 |
BOBSTER I stumbled upon this program, and what sold me was the ability to create clips right off a DVD w/o having to encode DV to Final Cut or any such time-intensive measures. I/O editing is still its strongest aspect. "Save As" only works with MOV, and not with MP4 or AVI - for me anyway. This creates problems when dealing cross-platform with PC users. Exporting fails often, or creates huge, unusable files (though that might be mea culpa re: video export settings). The so-called "news" on the site is from March 2006! What gives? Having said all that, I've decided to keep this program because its strengths are enough to warrant holding on to. Let's hope it gets an update sometime soon! (Version 1.8)

Xtorrent | Nov 25 2006 |
BOBSTER I haven't tried xTorrent yet, but that's because Azureus 2.5 is working out so very well for me. After trying BitTorrent, Tomato Torrent, Bits on Wheels and Transmission - which all ended up killing my cable modem connection at some point - I tried Azureus and it works like a charm. I actually like the fact that you can edit your UL/DL speeds, etc. - I think that is what's saving my cable connection! (Version 1.0b2v22)

BOBSTER After 2 weeks of solid use, I maintain my opinion that Azureus 2.5 is the BEST torrent client for Mac. Cable modem is going strong, sharing is uninterrupted, DL/UL speeds are excellent. No other client I have tried (Transmission, BoW, Tomato, etc.) can achieve this. (Version 2.5)

BOBSTER Well, I am a happy torrentor once again. Azureus 2.5 is IMHO the king of torrent apps for Mac. I have tried and used the original BitTorrent, Tomato Torrent, Bits on Wheels and Transmission. I have liked them all in various ways, and also disliked them all in various ways. I tried a previous release of Azureus while I still used Panther, and it never worked properly. If I recall right, it never even launched properly! But those days are gone. Az 2.5 under Tiger is solid, stable and fast - and by fast I mean the DL/UL speeds are great. Transmission cannot boast the same success. Az's UI can be intimidating for some torrentors, but they work around this issue by offering 3 modes: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. With each successive mode you get to tweak more settings. If you want to leave the setting alone entirely, then choose Basic and you're done. If you want to noodle, try either Int or Adv. Ok, that's it for now. I hope my honeymoon with Azureus 2.5 lasts for a long time! (Version 2.5)

Transmission | May 2 2006 |
BOBSTER (PM MDD 1GHz, 1 GB RAM, 10.3.9, 5 Mbit cable) Well, as much as I didn't want to, I have to admit that Transmission outperforms Bits on Wheels (my previous favorite). Transmission certainly lacks a lot of the features built into BoW, but the bottom line: it doesn't trip out my modem. No matter what tweaks I applied to the network settings, BoW would, without fail, kill the connection. Transmission is a LOT more stable in this department. Admittedly I have had one or two modem crashes since switching, but that's because I got a bit overzealous after switching to Transmission and tried running too many torrents LOL :-) Overall, well done!
