BLODWYN  As a follow up to my previous post, the developer has been very responsive to my bug reports and suggestions. The latest version V1.10 has a number of improvements and fixes, and is good enough to check out.

AutoNotes
Sep 23 2009

BLODWYN  I downloaded the trial, opened up the application and created a note. I then closed the application and re-opened it. The note list came up blank, in other words the note I created previously had not been saved.

So I tried creating a new note repository in my Dropbox folder. This created 4 identical repository entries in the preference pane and resulted in many popup messages telling me there were duplicate entries.

My conclusion: This is not ready for release

BLODWYN  @SEMIOTICMONKEY

If you re-read my earlier reply, I gave instructions on how to search for tagged files, which you will note was NOT based on the Spotlight Comment field. The Spotlight Comment field is not used by Tags, and is left unchanged

FileWard
Jan 20 2009

BLODWYN  I like the fact that FileWard works on individual files rather than requiring an encrypted container. For me this makes storing encrypted files on remote storage services like iDisk or Dropbox easier and with quicker upload/download times than with a container. If you wanted you could have a different password for each file, giving even greater security against password crack attacks.

Tags
Jan 19 2009

BLODWYN  Sure you can. Just highlight the files with the tag you want to edit/delete, bring up the Tags window and delete/edit the tag. You can use a Finder Spotlight search to find the files with the tag you're interested in - search for Tags>Contains>Name-of-Tag (the "Tag" can be found by selecting "Other" and then scrolling down the list to "Tags"). You can select all the files in the search window, bring up the Tags window and edit/delete them all at once.

The Hit List
Jan 13 2009

BLODWYN  This is still in beta with a few features still to be implemented (like recurring actions), so no official rating given, but I would give it a 5 star rating based on its potential given the way it's working now. The Hit List strikes a great balance between elegance, ease of use, and power. It supports the usual GTD actions, projects and contexts, and also supports tags, tabbed views and smart folders.

OmniFocus is the big dog in this category, and has plenty of depth, but is a bit austere in its appearance and lacks tags. THL has the elegance of a Mac application and hits all of the features most people would want. I'm running OF and THL in parallel at the moment and am finding I much prefer the experience of using THL.

BLODWYN  Well if you're holding off on the upgrade because you don't like the toolbar, then you obviously don't need the new features. For me the features I gain far outweigh any toolbar dislikes - in any case I can turn off the toolbar if I wanted to. The toolbar is behaving itself for me so far, no weirdness experienced like you're getting.

BLODWYN  Well, if you bought version 2.1 any time in 2008, you qualify for a free upgrade. That's pretty generous IMO. Check out this page for details http://forums.circusponies.com/categories/15/posts/9942

Dropbox
Sep 11 2008
*****

BLODWYN  Dropbox is a great application. Once set up it just sits there and automatically keeps your dropbox folder synchronized between all the systems you have connected to your dropbox account. Dropbox works equally well with Mac, Windows, and Linux systems, or any mix of the three. Just launched to the public, dropbox has been in a closed beta for quite a while, and has been stable and remarkably trouble-free. The actual data which is copied to their server is held on Amazon S3, so it's pretty secure and well backed-up. The only ding I give it, is that (currently) the only options seem to be a limited size free account or a 50GB account for $9.99 per month, with nothing in between. A couple more options would be nice.

Overall though, I've been really impressed with it

VMware Fusion

BLODWYN  Downloaded OK. The installation failed right at the end after entering my serial number with a postflight script failure. My VM runs but ethernet is disabled.

There's a thread on VMWare Communities started covering this issue

FileSpot
Sep 19 2007

BLODWYN  I converted from folders to a Spotlight tagging system a while ago. File Spot is the absolute best utility for organizing. Adding smart folders to the 'Tags' tab means you have an immediate filter based on the tags you've assigned to the files. Highly recommended.

Punakea
Jun 5 2007

BLODWYN  Punakea is looking very good. Up until now I've been using TagBot, which I like a lot, and have around 1500 files already tagged. One feature that TagBot has is to import existing file tags. This is a big time saver if you have an existing tag scheme so a suggestion would be to add this feature. Also the ability to change the tag prefix from a '@' to a '&' would be great.

BLODWYN  Looks really good. Any chance there could be an option or a toggle to hide actions with due dates in the future? I prefer not to see future actions unless I want to take a quick look and depress myself :-(

EasyWMA
Jun 4 2006
*****

BLODWYN  Great software. I just embarked on converting nearly 600 albums that I had previously saved in WMA format, 5621 songs in all. I batch processed around 50-60 albums at a time over several days and EasyWMA completed the job without a hitch including correct tagging all files. Does one thing and does it well. Recommended.

Popcorn
Apr 27 2006

BLODWYN  I am a Toast 7 user and ordered the Popcorn 2 upgrade. In the email from Digitalriver the space where the CD Key should be was blank and no follow up emails (checked my spam folder too).

Navigating the support site was a joke. Calling the support line numbers ended up with 2 groups directing me to call each other. Nobody had the ability to help me with a key so I've requested a refund. My conclusion is that if you buy a Roxio product you are on your own as far as support is concerned. If it doesn't work out of the box, forget it.
