BDKENNEDY1  The dev team has no way to test this old technology themselves and users aren't willing to test it for bugs, so they dropped it.

The dev team is not a brick and mortar building with 100 employees and unlimited resources. The dev team is several software developers donating their spare time from their homes to keep this software going.

No one is going to spend dozens of hours writing and testing code that 4 people are going to use.

LMP  I disagree. Just because a vocal minority does not care for XviD/AVI support, does not mean that there is no silent majority that wants this support.

Look at it this way: how many audio applications support .ogg and AAC, but not MP3?

AVI is the MP3 of video. It plays anywhere, and its quality is good enough for most users. Dropping support for AVI is like iTunes dropping support for MP3 in favor of AAC. It might be a good move from a purely technological point of view, but how many people prefer MP3 because it's more compatible?

BDKENNEDY1  After a year it seems the developer has come around to redesign his web site and support forums. Unfortunately, all previous comments were erased with the old support forums.

I can't, in my right mind pay for an upgrade to 3.0 knowing the developers past history with no support.

BDKENNEDY1  This program definitely has potential, but it's going to be a while. The fact that the developers are responsive will definitely push this program into the mainstream, but it seems from using the software that the program is suffering from its rapid growth.

The GUI is a mess - different shades of grey everywhere, text with blurred shading that makes it hard to read, black and grey stripped panes and basically controls scattered everywhere.

Creating a navigation bar is not intuitive at all and has to be updated for every page.

I have high hopes for this software in the future, but I can see that the GUI is created by developers and not designers - similar to Freeway Pro.

While an excellent price, I do not pay to beta test software. I pay to use it.

BDKENNEDY1  Technically, you can create a web site from scratch. You CAN NOT create a web site from scratch with this product without downloading and using the developer tools and learning them. There are other programs available that allow you to create custom themes and they cost money - as much as $100.

BDKENNEDY1  Raise your hands if you are sick and tired of evaluating WYSIWYG web software and coming up empty-handed.

If you want to create a web site from a blank slate, you're out of luck. RapidWeaver forces you to use one of the included themes to which you can customize to your hearts desire. How hard would it have been it allow the user to use a blank page?

Many of the cool plugins cost money on top of the cost of RW and still don't allow me to do what I want.

I am extremely frustrated...

Goldfish Pro: Has WYSIWYG down pat, excellent user interface but no support from the developer.

Freeway Pro: Most developed but buggy and clunky, overly-complicated interface.

RapidWeaver: Best most professional user interface but can't create a site from scratch.

Will someone please buy these 3 companies, combine the software and give us a single, excellent WYSIWYG program without having to install 1700 plugins? For god's sake why is this so difficult?

FIZZICIST  BDKENNEDY1:

Thanks! Consider my hand raised. Your review saved me the trouble of downloading and trying Rapidweaver. The feature list looks good, especially the parts about Rapidweaver's ability to generate standards-compliant XHTML+CSS code, plus the ability to edit the code directly. But if it doesn't let me design my own layouts from scratch in WYSIWYG mode, then what good is having the WYSIWYG editor in the first place? I might as well build my site from scratch in a really good coding app—like SEEdit Maxi 2—which (as of this writing) is freeware.

Your questions hit the nail on the head:

"Will someone please buy these 3 companies, combine the software and give us a single, excellent WYSIWYG program without having to install 1700 plugins? For god's sake why is this so difficult?"

I don't know why no one has done it yet (as far as I know), but I'll gladly buy a license for the first application that provides WYSIWYG construction from the ground up, generates W3C compliant code, and allows full, easy editing access to all parts of that code—including the CSS style sheet.

Until then, the best combination I've found for my needs (and it's still a pain, I'll tell you) is iWeb in combination with SEEdit Maxi 2, with occasional help from CSS Edit and HTML Optimizer.

SJSW  RapidWeaver actually does have a blank page solution that is so powerful that in the past year I have switched over from using the Dreamweaver/Coda/CSSEdit combo that I used previously in my web design and development business. I use "Jonas Themes" Blocksbox RW theme which in combination with the Blocks plug-in from Your Head is IMHO the best blank-canvas WYSIWYG tool of any kind at any price. Of course both the theme and the plug-in are third party "extras" but well worth the price to make RW a true blank-canvas approach creation program. I will admit that there is a learning curve to getting RW, the theme, and the plug-in working in harmony (and like every program it has it's quirks) but once you do creating beautiful, not to mention compliant, sites is a real joy. If you possess good design and graphics skills, the possibilities are endless. I would encourage anyone looking for a blank-canvas approach to give the Blockbox theme a spin and see if it's for you. I can honestly say that it's made my life much easier (than Dreamweaver which I never really liked even after getting good at it) and my clients absolutely love the results.

JOHN BIGBOOTE  BDKENNEDY, before you pop off with your disdain for a product you don't even know, shouldn't you do just a little research? I started using RapidWeaver about four months ago and within the FIRST DAY, I had found out how to build a site from scratch, without applying a theme.

By reading a few of the forums at www.realmacsoftware.com, I found out about the plugin Blocks and it's companion theme (or actually nontheme), BlocksBox. Yes, you have to purchase the plugin, but the price of RW with 10 plugins is still cheaper than DreamWeaver. Blocks allows you to drop elements on the page, resize, etc. and BlocksBox gives you a blank slate.

Do your homework before you crucify a product.

153957PHOTOGRAPHY, SANJUANSKYWAY, JOHN BIGBOOTE:

Thanks for the information. I guess there's no substitute for trying RapidWeaver for myself.

As it turns out, I need to build a site that has some pretty extensive database capabilities. I don't see anything about that in Realmac's features list, but it doesn't exclude RapidWeaver as a tool for building a good-looking, standards-compliant "front-end" site that's accessible to all users. The part of the site that requires user registration and login for database access is a different matter. It looks like I'll be using Drupal for that.

Thanks again for the info about building pages from scratch. I'm looking forward to trying Rapidweaver now.

Still, it misses the point, since RW is targeted at those who don't write HTML and want a quick and dirty way to publish websites.

BDKENNEDY1  No support will be Goldfish's downfall.

I've used Freeway Pro and Rapidweaver and Goldfish Pro is very promising. There's not much I haven't been able to do with it. I've been able to produce a professional looking web site with custom HTML and it's the closest to a WYSIWYG program I've used yet. Think of iWeb the way it's supposed to be.

Goldfish will not succeed because there is absolutely no support from the developer who has apparently written this software as a hobby. The help is minimal and the user forums are a ghost town of previous users that have given up on getting any help or updates.

This developer needs to sell this program to a company that will support and update it. I do not recommend buying it until this developer decides he wants to take this project seriously.

BDKENNEDY1  I've been using FW Pro for 6 months and there is plenty, PLENTY of room for improvement.

While it's the best WYSIWYG web building software for the Mac (haven't tried Goldfish yet) the interface is clunky and unintuitive. Many user interface elements don't make sense such as how menu items are grouped, populating lists in a drop down box, including PHP files and I've spent hours upon hours trying to figure things out such as adding a form or editing the header.

Placing objects that must be aligned perfectly is difficult between the Master page and individual pages and sometimes FW doesn't update the changes between the two, causing me to just give up on what the problem was instead or wasting anymore time and start the whole site over again.

My biggest problem is how it handles your graphic files. Under certain situations when you have a graphic on your Master page, FW will import the same graphic for as many individual pages you have. That means when you build your site it will include the same file several times into the build, causing your FW file to balloon in size and then it takes 10 times longer to build.

The GUI is clunky and looks and feels like it was ported over from the OS 9 days even though it wasn't. It suffers from redraw problems and overall the program should probably be rewritten from scratch.

I got my site finished and doing what I want it do do eventually, but I still keep a lookout for something better. This program has been around long enough where it should be trim, tight and intuitive.

BDKENNEDY1  I don't know what happened with this version, but it decodes my FLAC files to Apple Lossless 3 times slower than the previous version.

I know this because I had just used the previous version on the same files 5 minutes before I updated the software.

Also, one of the files didn't encode. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you're encoding a lot of files and aren't watching the screen, you could wind up with a lost song.

BDKENNEDY1  I've lived long enough to see it all. The next version of MacTheRipper will need to be activated over the internet.

MacTheRipper was the defacto standard for ripping DVD's on your Mac. Now they have implemented a license protection scheme for their software that phone's home when you connect to the internet.

That's right folks. The developers are so full of themselves that they are protecting their own software that pirates DVD's.

They ask you to donate money to support them even though they haven't had an official release in almost 2 years. Instead, donate your money to DVD2OneX. At least they come out with regular updates.

GARYD  Just so people don't misunderstand what DVD2One does, DVD2One is a compressor, rather than a true ripper. It does a fine job on discs without copy protection and on discs which have already been ripped to remove or bypass such protection. It does not rip copy protected discs, nor does it claim to do so anywhere on its web site. It is certainly not an alternative to a program like MacTheRipper.
