AQTINC  OH NO!!!

I've been an avid user since version 5 (OSX) and it has been performing nicely, and the author has been making great strides to continually improve the feature set. No complaints with the software...

...BUT...

Rig control i now lost! After upgrading to OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard), the drivers for West Mountain Radio's RIGTalk are no longer available!! WMR does NOT support the Mac, and I'm lost as to what to do. Has anyone else discovered this problem, and is there a solution available NOW?

The software is great, but rig control is a must have, and under Snow Leopard, it is a have NOT--at least using RIGTalk.

AQTINC  Thanks again to the MBU folks a Microsoft! Update ran flawlessly, and we continue to enjoy full MSO compatibility across our mixed platforms. Good job...as usual.

Try not to pay any attention to the autonomic responses from the MS haters. Their comments are quite irrelevant anyway, because vitriol is the emotional response from the hopelessly ignorant.

AQTINC  Simply said....two steps forward, one step back.

There appears to be a shift in Celestrak reporting names/format, and while the 2.0.7 release should be compatible, they're not there yet.

If you use this, use the AMSAT keps, but be prepared, AMSAT does not keep a list as comprehensive as CelesTrak, and it only updates once per week, which is not suitable for tracking the ISS.

Also, apparently, they are now referring to the ISS as "ZARYA" instead of "ISS" or "ARISS".

MacDoppler really needs to have an "Append" or "Add To" function for the satellite keps list. This business of just pulling the pre-packaged sets from CelesTrak is just not robust enough. Without such a function, it leaves the user having to manually pull all of your desired keps, assemble them into a text document, and then finally importing the complete list into MacDoppler. Partial lists cannot be used as it will delete any sats not in your upload list.

AQTINC  Last two releases b86 and b88 crash on load. Looks like the typical beta development cycle--squash 2 bugs and add a new one.

However, prior to that, the Cocoa interface is a HUGE step up. I've avoided that antiquated OS-9 version since about, forever. I bought the version 5.0 app immediately upon seeing it. I can hardly wait for the beta cycle to complete!!

AQTINC  I just started using satellites in the past 2 weeks, and I'm dedicated to Mac. This package is an absolute must have if you're interested in this communications mode. I use it with an ICOM-910H, and after an initial doppler recalibration, it does all of the troublesome tuning and tracking automatically. It completely eliminates all of the hassles that have kept me from trying satellite modes all of these years.

AQTINC  Nice app, but definitely a Rev 1 type of product. I bought this back in March on the promise and expectation that this would evolve to the new standard bearer for Macintosh ham radio logging software.

No updates now for more than 9 months, and they are needed to bring this product up to needed capability.

Some of the needed improvements include: ability to save window settings; keep notes window floating on top; log off times; better handling of roundtables and nets. There are many other features that competitors offer, but if I could just get these then I'd stick with Aether. Without them, I have to move on to a more capable but uglier and more difficult product.

I'm very disappointed with the total lack of updates following payment. Save your money!

AQTINC  Installer worked effortlessly. I'm an intensive Word and PowerPoint user for training programs. I haven't seen any stability problems with these apps, so I'll defer to the Excel power users if there were any stability problems there.

All told, the apps work as advertised and allow those of that must function in a Windows/Office dominated workplace to bring our Macs to the table. Woot! to the Mac Business Unit of Microsoft for continuing to support us in spite of the unjustified venom displayed by so many in the Apple community.

Geez, just take two aspirin and a nap, and maybe you won't be so knee-jerk bitchy. Otherwise, do the rest of us a favor and keep your Kool-Aid-inspired comments to yourselves. Using, and being appreciative of the MBU is in no way being disloyal to anyone!

Parallels Desktop
Nov 25 2007

AQTINC  Point taken, in fact I do agree with your opinion regarding Boot Camp.

However, I've stated before and elsewhere in these forums that in order for MacUpdate to remain a credible source of user information, users need to write reviews with the highest levels of objectivity. You make an assumption that simply isn't true--that most people use these tools to run BootCamp partitions. In fact, the vast majority are running VMs, and often multiple OSes.

I've used both too, and I agree that VMWare does a better job with BC partitions, although not perfect or failproof. Parallels has never worked right in that area, and still doesn't today. However, on VMs, Parallels does offer a more seamless experience than Fusion, as "Coherence" continues to outpace there.

Objectively, I'd say that both have their respective pluses and minuses, and that on balance they are comparable today. For your needs to run BootCamp, I think I would opt for VMWare as you do. Fusion does seem to be more stable than Parallels when running a BC partition, however, neither product fully reproduces the experience of booting into the Windows partition when using Vista (Ultimate), and both can cause crashes that do not happen when booting into Vista as BC was designed to do.

Given that the vast majority of users are in fact running VMs, then Fusion's stability advantage in BC may not be a factor for them.

In my humble opinion, you closing comments came on way too strong to be called objective, and really started to sound like marketing hype.

WAL9000  Point taken. I probably shouldn't post reviews when I'm upset with programs or I'll just end up ranting at them.

Regarding Coherence, what makes it superior to VMware's Unity? Coherence often left chunks of the Windows desktop floating around, and the windows stuck out oddly with their lack of drop shadows. I haven't tested Unity much (With 10.5 I've just confined Fusion to its own space and used it in fullscreen), so I don't know how reliably it works. I do know that it has drop shadows and expose treats each window as a separate window instead of a single block for all of them as Parallels did. Has Coherence improved significantly in recent versions?

AQTINC  Just wondering if I'm the only one that's beginning to doubt these reviews on Parallels and VMware.

It seems that for both products, so-called "reviews" are posted, almost within minutes of their posting.

Further, it seems odd that in both cases, a review slamming one product, IN THE SAME REVIEW, makes a pitch for the competitor. By the same token, a good review is far too often flawless, when we all know that both products have their own respective issues.

I can't help it, but these reviews are starting to sound too much like both companies have charged their marketing minions with trashing the competition, praising their own, and making blatant sales pitches disguised as "reviews".

WAL9000  I don't work for VMware. My comment about switching to it was intended to help people who weren't aware that Parallels isn't the only option in this market. I've had bad experiences with this program, several of my friends have had bad experiences with this program, and I'm just trying to help people out.

And as nice as it would be to be getting paid by VMware, I don't. I'm a poor college student who felt ripped off by some subpar software.

Maybe it works better for pure VMs than it does for running the Boot Camp partition, which is what I used it for, but I have a feeling that most people are buying it for that, and not so they can set up multiple virtual machines.

Microsoft Office 2004
Nov 6 2007

AQTINC  The updater works fine for me.

I read the links that the admin provided, and would like to offer another possible explanation:

Almost every MS-Office updater is written to look for the most recent revision of the Office apps. If you missed a revision, then all subsequent revisions will fail to locate an upgradable copy of office. Additionally, if you reinstall office, you have to reapply most updates in proper order, to bring it up to date.

As is typical with Microsoft, their error messages always leave something to be desired. In this case, it's not that it can't locate office, per se, it's more likely that it can't find the correct revision of office to update.

AQTINC  Antiquated? By whose standard? Bear in mind that it is Microsoft that has set the "standard" for office apps that everyone else tries (but never really achieves) to equal.

If you do expect to be fully compatible with 95% of the business community, then you need MS-Office compatible apps. I've tried every challenger, and they all, invariably, come up short in full compatibility somewhere.

I'm just happy that the Mac Business Unit continues to support us, in spite of the flagrant venom spewed by so many ignorant Mac users.

JAZZYGB1  Stop saying its a 'Beta' like this excuses everything. Take a look at how many bug fixes there are for the last official release. Hardly 'stable' as you claim to have been suffering from so many bugs.

Taken from the whats new in this version posted above....

Random kernel panics on virtual machine startup - fixed

SIW program crashes Parallels Tools Center - fixed

Choppy sound in Windows Media Player 11 in Vista Ð fixed

Hi' window sometimes appears on Windows shutdown - fixed

And many more besides.

And these are fixes for the 'official' non beta version.

At the moment Parallels is way behing Fusion & just seems to fall further & further behind - beta or not.

ROBERT MORTON  I mostly agree with your statements. The problem is that version 3 was completely unusable for me. That was the official one. Anytime I went to shutdown or restart a VM it crashed in the middle of shutting down. If the Mac went to sleep while VPN'ed into the office, I had to force a restart. These were real issues with the "final" version. The fix has been to install the betas. I haven't installed this one yet, but the others have been perfect for me.

I know I shouldn't whine about a free app, but I've never had so much trouble with this app before. I know it's still only 0.9, but stability is a big step backwards. I'm going to look for an older rev to use for now too.

AQTINC  After a little more time and testing, my Windows XP VM still can't run videos or DVDs in Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or WinDVD. I can't get it to run any of my Windows games either.

I have to conclude that DirectX is still vaporware for XP as it is for Vista.

Version 3 now installs cleanly, and has a number of terrific new features. Coherence mode is now so seamless, that the underlying OS is virtually irrelevant.

However, if like me, you're looking for DirectX support, Parallels still hasn't delivered. In their website, they talk about playing real-time 3D games. What games? There's no game on my shelf that will run, and frankly, with only 16MB of video ram, is there anything after 1999 that will??

3Ghz quad Mac Pro; 8GB RAM, dual 23" Cinema Displays; OSX 10.4.9 with all updates; Windows XP SP2 with all updates; Windows Vista Ultimate with all updates; Parallels 3.0.4128.

AQTINC  Well, from my view, they got the installer bugs worked out, and it installs cleanly for both XP and Vista VMs. All new features appear to be working as promised EXCEPT DirectX.

Direct3D is still vaporware for Vista (e.g. still can't even play Solitare) as Direct3D apps crash on launch. I haven't tested with my XP VM yet, but DirectX is a no-show for Vista.

I paid $100 for two license upgrades, and gladly did so for the promise of DirectX. While the other features are nice, if I knew that DirectX still wasn't working, I would have held on to my money for a while.

AQTINC  Ok, final comment this evening. I downloaded and installed the InterVideo Platinum DVD player for my Windows-XP VM.

No apparent problems during download and installation, however, each time I try to play a DVD I get failure to initialize overlay errors.

This would suggest that the DirectX functionality does not work in XP either.

On the other hand it is a very lovely checkbox in the configuration window, even though it seems to be totally dysfunctional for both XP and Vista.

I'm going to sleep. I find it hard to believe that those reporting "no problems" have really given this a proper shakedown. All of the new features appear to work nicely EXCEPT the DirectX capability.

AQTINC  Ok, I ran my Windows XP VM. After conversion, the VM "choked" 3 times during start-up executing winlogon.exe. One time it froze up the entire computer. After I shut down and restarted the computer, I ran Parallels with the XP VM again. This time, it hit a couple of bumps with the winlogon.exe, but continued to run until Windows was up and running like normal.

I shut down the VM and restarted it, and it now seems to be working fine, as before, but now some of the new features are available. :-)

I have no 3D apps on this VM, so I can't test to see if the 3D acceleration is working here. That part remains unknown. However, the DirectX acceleration is still not working on the Vista Ultimate VM.

AQTINC  Build is not yet ready for prime time.

Prior to release 3, Windows Vista Ultimate would run, but without Direct3D support. The basic Solitaire game would run, but in a painfully slow manner. Now, any time I try to run an application needing graphics acceleration, the app begins to load and then fails.

Any other app that I've tried that DOESN'T require 3D acceleration (Office 2007, Minitab, etc.) still runs fine, but the DirectX acceleration isn't working here at all, and crashes apps requiring it.

From the Parallels website:

"New! Run today’s most popular PC games on a Mac with support for 3D graphics" (It can't even run Solitaire in Windows Vista, let alone trying to run a FPS like Halo.)

I haven't tried it on my Windows XP VM yet, but my Vista VM has taken a big step backwards.

Any person that thinks that one can realistically go through life without carrying some level of debt either has no practical life experience yet; has an income level so low that shouldn't have any debt, or has an income level so high that 10's or 100's of thousands of dollars of expected, unplanned, or unavoidable life costs is still chump change.

For the 90% of the rest of us, managing debt is an unavoidable reality of lie.

I tried to install this on my new Mac Pro, and it won't accept my registration number. I paid the $, got registration, and now it rejects the registration as "invalid".

The only difference that I can ID is the Xeon chips, and I can't for the life me understand why that matter at all.

Also, support e-mail has changed. I'm now waiting for a reply.

Studiometry
Nov 28 2006

AQTINC  This app is written in RealBasic. RB is not a bad choice for a developer that needs to deploy on Mac and Windows, but it is always behind the curve for both environments. For example, even though Universal Binary has been the recommended standard on Macs for more than a year now, RB still hasn't got their implementation quite right.

Studiometry will not scale up well. As a RB app, it lacks the efficiency that either a VisualStudio or Cocoa app will have, and will bog down quickly as users are added.

It is a great app in the hands of your billing administrator, but look for something else to do the daily T&E tracking for each of your other users. They can then submit their T&Es to your billing admin for proper handling in Studiometry.

That's where we're at. Not the ideal solution, but for us, Studiometry's other benefits far outweigh the switch to some other solution.

AQTINC  This app is a great idea. As someone that runs Virtual PC and Parallels, there are times when it would be nice to suspend a CPU-hungry Windows job running in the background.

Yeah, I know that you can set that preference in both VPC and Parallels, but this app is for those times when you didn't know what you were getting into and then want to override your preferences.

I hope the UB issues can get resolved soon.

AQTINC  @Bebop: You could simply type "17" in the page # area...just like PDFView. We can forgive your lack of knowledge about using Adobe Reader, but please spare us your sarcasm until you know enough to have an opinion that matters.

@Germano60: Go to the IRS website; download the W-9 form; open it in PDFView and you'll see that PDFView can't display it correctly. Adobe Reader displays and allows form-filling correctly. That's just one example.

By the way, nobody said that you weren't a professional, but you clearly don't understand the range of functionality that I'm referring to, that PDFView doesn't offer.

AQTINC  So you say, but I don't buy your argument because you most obviously don't work in a world that relies heavily on .pdf files for presentations, faxing, professional printing, storage and archiving, securing intellectual property (from the average user), secure digital signatures, etc.,... In other words, the real working world.

Your app is probably fine for the student/casual user community out there, but so is Preview and Reader. Does it outperform Preview...probably. Does it outperform Reader...maybe in some limited respects, but for the most part, defintely NOT.

Anyway, let's address the counterpoints:

"1) it's faster"

Yes, it's fater to load, but not is use. Just exactly how fast can anyone read? The human is ALWAYS the gating factor in document processing, so speed is largely irrelevant and has never been a problem on my machines.

Admittedly, Reader's relative performance on Macintels (compared to PPC) is very annoying up through version 7. Version 8 of Reader and Acrobat Pro are now in Universal Binary. (upgrade time again arrrrggh!!)

"2) it automatically open up at the maximum screen size,....."

Just set your preferences in Adobe Reader--which by the way offers a full screen option. They also provide far more control over preferred presentation style and default magnification through the preference settings.

"3) about the "plenty of features" in adobe reader: what are you needing....."

I believe I answered that above.

"4) last but not least: it's damn simple and friendly to be used;...."

Of course it's simpler. It has less functionality.

The reviews just came on way too strong. It almost read like a developer (or friends) logged in with different user names to pump up the app. They just lacked a certain amount of objectivity.

That's what set me off in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I applaud anybody that makes an effort to help make Macs more usable, to as wide a range of people as possible, especially when they offer it without charge. However, many of us rely on objective reviews in here, and this thread just smacked of developer bias. It's not some breakthrough app. It's just another "me too app", and its over-glowing, almost hyperbolic representation here didn't sound at all objective.

I think that the description in the opening page on MacUpdate, and on the developer's website was terrific and accurate. It's the reviews that were over the top.

More objective reviews would call this a "simple" PDF viewer, with certain advantages over Preview while not attempting to portray it as the be all, end all, of PDF readers. There are other alternatives without the shortcomings of this one. It's a disservice to everyone when reviews lack objectivity.

Let the users decide...download a copy of Reader for Mac. I have no doubt that its compatibility (particularly with graphics and web) and feature list will persuade those out there that actually do need an industrial strength PDF reader.

Also, when we post a review, please let's try to keep it objective, truthful and helpful for others. Tell uswhat apps you're comparing against. Tell us about your platform and software versions. Tell us the pros and the cons. Once in a while we actually see an app that really does merit rave reviews, but that's almost never the case with "me too" apps.

Thanks for "listening".

GERMANO60  I listen. But I can't understand such kind of criticism toward a guy who spent time to provide an honest application who's just doing what is claimed to do, in a simple and efficient way.

You may have your reason not to use it and to prefer something else, but in the same way there are also other who, for their reasons as good as yours, prefer using something simpler and that they consider fit enough to their needs.

Sorry, but IMHO starting a comment with a sentence like "Why should I use this ...?" and starting criticizing something that *it's working as it claims* is everything but an objective position, it's pure a subjective matter of personal preferences. And sorry again for being very direct - I don't mean being blunt :) - but this kind of comment is everything but useful and it's a little bit respectless toward the developer (by the way, I haven't any kind of connection with that guy, just to be precise).

Thanks for you listening as well.

AQTINC  In fairness to the developer, who as I said has a sterling record of performance with us, it would not surprise me one bit if the source of the problem traces back to REALbasic's recently released update.

They've (RB) had a horrible track record with code defects (see the reviews here in Macupdate) and I am delibrately holding off on the upgrade because I simply don't believe their first release of Universal Binary support will be correct.

I hope this gets resolved quickly. We love Studiometry, but would love it more in UB.

AQTINC  I've been a Studiometry user for more than 2 years now, and have been very pleased with the product. It's worked very well for us, and while I've never had a support issue, the software has run well and has been continually updated with what I consider to be a sterling record...

...until now

DON'T USE THE 4.0.2 UPDATE

It will not recognize your prefs or backup data and will continually loop you through a 'data corrupted' error message asking you to restore from backup. If you quit the app, then your data will be lost and while the backup files are present, you can't load them. If you force quit out of the app, you will lose you license data.

Thank God I kept a complete backup of the users/.../Library/Application Support/Studiometry folder and the .dmg file for version 4.0.1. I was able to recover everything.

Version 4 is a dog running on Rosetta, but version 4.0.1 does work albeit slowly.

AGAIN, DON'T USE THE 4.0.2 UPDATE -- at least not before backing up your old version of the app, it's support files, and your Studiomtery data folder.

BUMBLEB  Well, wouldn't it just be neat if Studiometry was built with de facto standard Xcode from Apple, beautiful Cocoa, and not with flawed, slowly adapting, buggy RealBasic? Then the universal binary would have been a reality like... a year ago...

And furthermore, wouldn't it be nice if the developer, Tom, fully tested the releases before letting premium-paying customers be lab-rats, and loose valuable time solving trouble?

Or at the very least marking it BETA, like:

"Studiometry 4.1.b1 Universal Binary - this is a public beta, not yet stable..."

And wouldn't it be nice if a Studiometry-customer could have faith in the support-system of Studiometry? Records clearly show how Studiometry free support equals: Studiometry support-free;-/

MJDTH  (a) Studiometry cannot be built in Cocoa because it is a cross platform tool that runs on Mac and Windows. RealBasic is the best solution to do this.

(b) We have noted on our site that Studiometry 4.0.2 is a beta release and have that displayed by every download link of the beta update.

(c) If you need support please use http://support.oranged.net/

Generally posting a response to someone else's review on an independent software download website isn't the best way of getting support from a developer. We respond to every ticket made on our support site and help everyone who has any questions as much as possible.

BUMBLEB  Tom, while I realize Studiometry is used by cross-platform teams, I can only talk from my own use, and I for one, like arguably many other mac-users, don't care about a Windows version - as stated before, I'd rather have a native Mac OS X cocoa built app, that works flawlessly on my OS of choice.

I've been a paying customer of Studiometry way back since before a Windows version was released.

How come you think I'm here for support now? Have i asked any questions? No.

Have I expressed a deep lack of confidence in Studiometry development and support? Yes.

I'm not writing because I need support in this instance, I'm writing because I feel the need to comment on my own and fellow Studiometry users unfortunate issues with development and support in the past. A past where you just plain DID NOT answer support queries. Not just mine, but many other users as well. And carelessly shut down the forum. Read up on the comments here on Macupdate and Versiontracker for enlightenment.

I have tried 4.0 and I have not upgraded. I am deeply disappointed with the development and support of Studiometry in the last year.

It is my right to express in sane words my experiences with a company and its product. A product that I've used for 4 years. And enough is enough.

With your support-less time off the last months, I believe you've really shot yourself in the foot. You need a very good spindoctor to patch this IMO.

SJJ_PUBLIC  That's weird. I have never had iSquint produce an unplayable video. There were some problems at one point with it stopping the conversion prematurely, but that was fixed. The only current issue I've found with it is that when I try to convert a 720x480 slideshow exported by iPhoto ('05) (I'm not clear on why iPhoto '05 exports at that size, but it does, and does so by cropping the photos, not by stretching/squashing them - i.e. it is *not* a non-square-pixel format) the resulting video is stretched. I believe iSquint is presuming that a 720x480 video has non-square pixels, and in this case that's incorrect. I was able to work around this problem by manually setting the vertical and horizontal size to be 1.5:1 (720x480 is 1.5:1). For example: 540x360. In the end, though, I was much happier when I exported my slideshow to iDVD, instead of as a 720x480 quicktime file, created the DVD image and then used iSquint to convert the resulting VOB file to iPod format. This worked great and didn't result in cropped photos. I.e. I blame iPhoto's weird behavior, not so much iSquint, although iSquint may be presuming that anything that's 720x480 has non-square pixels and it shouldn't.

v2.1 isn't a paid upgrade to v2. Going from v1 to v2 was a paid upgrade--like 10.3 to 10.4 (wait, why is a .x upgrade $100+?) I didn't see how macupdate first displayed v2--if not as a paid upgrade I don't think you can fault Elgato for that.
