Now X
Nov 3 2009
*....

APEARSON  I recently "upgraded" to Now X (after having used NUTD and Contact for many years). Like many others, I find this new version appalling.

After many frustrations on Day 1, this is what happened on my second day with Now X:

My iMac had been asleep overnight.

On the morning of Day 2, I woke it up and went to the Now X window which was in week view (normal). I went to properties and reduced the size of the banner font to 16pt. I then went to page set-up to check orientation and scale. I then hit print. The window went blank. The print pane opened and I hit preview. The pane disappeared and the window stayed blank for several seconds. Then the month view (normal) reappeared!

I tried to print the week view again several times -- with and without page set-up, with and without preview -- the same thing happened every time, as above.

So I went to the month view and tried to print: no response at all (month view just stared back at me).

I quit Now X and reopened it, repeated the print exercises and got the same results, i.e., none.

So, I restarted the computer and opened Now X. I got the starting Now X services pane which stayed whirring away for two minutes or so. Finally the month view (normal) opened.

I tried to print direct from that window (i.e., I took no action after the software opened). It showed me the loading page window (though I noted that it was loading 12 pages in spite of my having changed that parameter to 1 the day before). I selected print page 1 to 1 and hit preview. Preview came up OK. I hit print and the page printed. I now went to the properties pane in month view and reduced the banner font to 16pt and the day cell font to 6% and hit print. Once again, the printing routine went according to Hoyle and I got a single page, with the banner font properly reduced. So I thought I was home free...but no...

This time I went to week view (normal) and changed the properties as follows: banner font to 16pt, day cell font to 6% and event font to 10pt. Then I tried to print. The window went blank and the print pane opened. I hit preview, whereupon the big rotating time icon flashed momentarily, then nothing -- no preview, blank window. Shortly the month view (normal) reappeared.

I tried to print again in month view, the small coloured rotating beach ball twirled for a moment then nothing, no reaction at all.

So I quit Now X and reopened it. It came up in month view (normal). I tried immediately to print -- no response whatever, the month view stared back at me. So I selected week view (normal) and the big rotating time icon flashed briefly, then the week view appeared. I hit print, the window went blank, then the print pane appeared, I selected page 1 to 1, and hit print. The big rotating time icon flashed briefly, then nothing, just the blank screen. Shortly afterward the month view appeared.

When the month view appeared, I hit print and absolutely nothing happened -- the month view stared back at me. And that's where we stand as of now.

Then I was unable to print my calendar in any view at all.

Perhaps this is simply a bug.

However, I have many other complaints, as follows.

Why do the days now run from left to right in the week view (they ran from top to bottom in Now 5)?

Why is there no information in the manual on printing? Why do changes to properties that show on the screen not show up in the printed version (e.g., when I try to cram more events onto the screen by reducing the font size in the properties panes, those events are still printed large and bold and therefore cropped)? Why does the software prepare 12 weeks/months for printing when I only want to print the week/month I'm looking at on the screen? Why am I not given any options about how the print-out looks, e.g., add the date and time of the print-out, or add the name of the person whose calendar it is, or describe how much of the total calendar is being printed? Why do I have no control over the colour or size of the printed page heading (which takes up a lot of space that could be used in the rest of the page for events)?

All of these features were available in every version of NUTD I ever purchased before. In short, why have Now offered for sale a less than half-baked piece of work?

Now should be paying me for the time I've spent finding out that I should have stuck with version 5 -- and at my hourly rates they'd already be owing me many times the cost of the "upgrade" to X.

Naturally, I have indeed gone back to version 5 and have emailed Now to ask for my money back. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that I have received no acknowledgment or other response from Now to that request (which I have sent twice already -- on October 25 and November 1).
(Version 10.0)
