Rhyme Genie
Nov 4 2009

AMERGIN  I'd love to try this out but cannot imagine downloading a 219mb application, let alone one that is just a rhyming dictionary! Can the developer please explain why it is so LARGE?

AMERGIN  Not knowing how MU's new 'threaded reply' works I have to write this as a comment. In response to MASTERWOW, the wiimote cannot actually generate sound, it will (using Osculator) allow you to control, for example, a synthesizer in GarageBand. It does this by mapping the movement of your wiimote or the buttons on your wiimote to controls in GarageBand (or any other application). I'd suggest you look at the Osculator forum at

http://www.osculator.net/bp/

for further info.

AMERGIN  Very nice app, seems stable and fast. Used it with a wiimote to control dvd player, itunes and various other apps. It is, however, not really donationware as it stalls every few minutes and waits for you to dismiss a reminder dialog before continuing. However I am thinking of sending the $19 as it could well be useful. I would though recommend to Camille that the reminder dialog become non modal in future versions to make it truly "non-crippleware", he could instead maybe limit its use to one app at a time until the fee is paid.

AMERGIN  Does this mean that those of us whose main computer is not connected (I connect with my powerbook) cannot use your app?

AMERGIN  Powercadd costs $995!!!!! Surely some developer can use Claris Cad as a model for a simple but inexpensive Mac app.

RapidWeaver

*****

AMERGIN  A nice product that's doing the necessary for me. My site is now getting quite large and needs to be broken up into smaller sub-sites to keep RapidWeaver from slowing down too much, but that's acceptable. This really is an easy app to get going on and is surprisingly flexible when you have used it for a while (I've now used it intensively for about 6 months). It is very stable (version 3.5.0) but as mentioned above, it gets sluggish when your site gets bigger. I use it with PhotoShop (to crop, adjust, compress pics) and CyberDuck (free ftp client) and my site is fine (www.kilkennytocapetown.com).

AMERGIN  For anyone suffering from asthma this is a great product. I'd also recommend that you look up buteyko on the web as you might be suffering unnecessarily.

Apple Keynote

*....

AMERGIN  Why is it that people are still applauding this application? It is now on Version 3 and still cannot export to anything useful! PDF and HTML export are pathetically lame - no hot links for example. PowerPoint export is unuseable. Flash export has been reduced in features since Version 2... and on and on! Please don't blindly applaud Apple and KeyNote unless you actually use this product seriously - which from where I stand is a virtual impossibility.

****.

AMERGIN  Have only used it for a short time but it has a lovely smooth feel using my Graphire and Powerbook 1.67G4. The price, however, means that I won't even consider it. Shame, as it does do that one thing I am always searching for - realtime drawing/painting. All the other features I could do without - just leave the smooth drawing/painting and drop the price to $30 or so.

CHIPOTLE  I understand that $90 is definitely over the "impulse buy" level, but are you serious? I can't comment directly on ZeusDraw's strengths (I'm casting about for a program to replace Fireworks, specifically, and I don't think this fills the requirements I have), but for Pete's sake, ZD's full price is less than the UPGRADE PRICE of a "big name" app from Adobe or... uh... Adobe. It's perfectly in line with the "prosumer app" price point of Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop Elements.

If there's a $30 program out there that does everything ZD does and does it as well, by all means, go for it. I don't think there is, though, and I think there's a reason there isn't.

BLACKSMITH_TB  Obviously, developing a useful and interesting app takes significant time and energy. And it's great to see developers get compensated for their work. Software is like any other product - prices are what the market will bear. I buy a fair amount of shareware personally, but I couldn't justify spending nearly $100 on a snazzy drawing program. So I'd rephrase this as "you might sell many more copies at a lower price."

AMERGIN  Just bought version 1.5.2. Tried defragging 25gb on my iBook but gave up when it had done less than half and had taken over three hours! Had used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup the drive beforehand so I just copied that back and am now fine again. I have techtool pro as well but the constant upgrade fees put me off. I'll bite the bullet now and pay the upgrade to ttp and just write this $25 down to experience (although I should have been suspicious when the demo only allows you to defrag up to 100mb!).

PEANUT BUTTER  what size is your drive?

3 hours for defrag is nothing on a 100GB HD. Try defraging a nearly full 750GB HD

AMERGIN  This is an amazing app for kids! My older two daughters (who are now 18 and 20) used this in its original incarnation on a IIfx back in the early nineties. My youngest daughter (who is 4 and just started school) has been using this version for a couple of years and still loves it. We need encouragement for apps like this and more of them!
