ALLBLUE Thank you Cedric, it has all worked as a zip, so I shall have a play with it over the next couple of weeks. The dmg thing is a bit of a mystery, I can see no reason why it would fail to mount. It is a repeatable anomalous behaviour and has left me baffled... (Version 1.0)

ALLBLUE OK, if it's no longer a beta it should work. I've always been a fan of Skype, and VOIP in general, but the last few versions (not including this one, I haven't tried it out yet) have sucked. Mature software should not deteriorate like this. If additional functionality introduces instability, there should be an earlier, stable build available, so that their customers are not left with an unusable application while they get the latest build fixed. ALLBLUE Well it downloads ok, it even verifies ok, it just isn't able to mount. It clearly is a valid file if you are opening it, I normally don't have a problem mounting dmgs so I am completely at a loss as to what could be happening here. (Version 1.0)

ALLBLUE Thanks for your advice btw, but it's not really helping I'm afraid! I just started Safari, downloaded, agreed to the EULA, disk image tries to mount... mounting failed appeared in the download window. I haven't got a dmg problem generally, I only just downloaded Skype which mounted as normal, but for some reason this one just will not. Oh well it's not the end of the world, it does look like a useful addition to PS but if I can't get it I can't get it! (Version 1.0)

ALLBLUE OK I tried restarting, but with the same end result - I double-click the dmg icon, 'agree' to the EULA and get the same "no mountable file systems" message. How strange. One odd thing I noticed (this happened both times I downloaded previously, but I couldn't take details of the file name) is that when I click on the download link above Firefox asks me what I want to do - meanwhile the file rbjayzwz.exe (complete with ugly three-barred icon) appears in my downloads folder. When I ok FF to download and save the dmg the .exe disappears and the dmg takes it's place. I don't understand that at all - what's an .exe file got to do with anything? (Version 1.0)

ALLBLUE Yes but I've been using this software for nearly three years - don't you think the word 'beta' should have been dropped by now? Look at the version number FFS! Or do you think permanently attaching the word excuses a sloppy development roadmap? 10.5.0 had plenty of bugs but that wasn't a beta, at what point are Skype intending to drop the word - 2.8.x, 3.0.x, ever? This is particularly pertinent because as a Skype Out customer they are holding my cash while putting out software that makes their service untenable. Hopefully this version will improve things back to where they were a few versions ago. I did not receive the courtesy of a reply from Skype to my mail btw. (Version 2.7.0.257)

MACUPDATE ADMIN No. You probably just need to restart your Mac. On the very rare occasion that a .dmg will not mount for me, a restart does the trick. (Version 1.0)

ALLBLUE This is a copy of a mail I have just sent to Skype: Mac platform betas getting worse I would like to know what has gone wrong with your mac development team. I've been a long time Skype user, in fact I have evangelised your service to friends, now your customers, because I was so impressed with your service. Of late however, the betas you are putting out are just horrible. 2.6.0.182 was simply unusable, very unstable (if a contact came online it would crash, when Skype Out connected it would crash, a piece of garbage really). The current version - 2.6.0.184 is not quite so unstable, but sound quality is awful, and the Skype phone I purchased 15 months ago, and which worked flawlessly with earlier betas, is now a pain to use because Skype takes over the audio input and keeps switching it down to minimum for some reason, making it inaudible at the other end. In system preferences you can see this happening - I drag the slider up to an acceptable level, and Skype pulls it back down again making the simple business of a phone call an exercise in stress management at both ends! Having just completed such a call, I just clicked on the open browser (Firefox) and that crashed - you are putting out sub-standard software, it's supposed to be beta not alpha, and I would like to know what is going on. Do you have a quality control department? In my experience when betas go backwards it is a sign that the developers are no longer bothering with it, time to look for alternatives. I don't know if your purchase by e-Bay is anything to with this, if some corporate executive has decided to abandon the Mac platform (a pretty foolish move if that was the case as the platform is expanding rapidly), or whether it is just sloppiness in your dev team, but this is simply unacceptable. VOIP is a maturing market, competitors are coming on stream, and although I have no desire to abandon Skype if you do not get your act together I will be left with no choice. I should point out that this is only audio, I have no webcam and hence do not use video. At the very least you should leave the latest usable beta available on your site, as many do, as I do, overwrite the old version with the new. I want some software I can use people, come on! Running OS 10.3.9 btw, and I will be posting this mail on both MacUpdate and VersionTracker to warn others of your current mac malaise. Please get your act together. Sincerely, (Version 2.6.0.184)

ALLBLUE As the comments below point out, there are a number of different ways to manage and access fonts, but I think this simple piece of freeware has a place. I have an older machine (iMacG4 800) and find most font apps slow to the point of distraction, including Font Book, or the other one I use FontDoc, which takes several minutes to start up. If I am in Photoshop and want to select a font, this app does the job perfectly. It opens in an instant, has a tiny CPU and RAM footprint and lets me quickly go through my library to find the one I want. Yes that is a niche use, but it fills my niche perfectly! Thanks to the dev. Slightly naff icon mind you! (Version 1.1)

ALLBLUE Excellent tip! It has long bugged me that on the odd occasion I want to download a video from YouTube I can't do it - even with apps such as this one coming out they tend to be 10.4 or above - still on 10.3.9 here. Word Counter | Feb 12 2007 |
ALLBLUE Could anyone explain the advantage of using this app over WordService? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10523 It provides 37 different word services, including statistics - words, characters, lines - accessible through the service menu, with no need to have a separate app running. I only ask because Word Counter sounds such a good bit of software, but I don't see that it would give me any additional functionality. Incidentally, if you do not want all 37 services fattening up your service menu, this other bit of freeware, Service Manager http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11777 is a PrefPane which allows you to remove any service you do not require from the menu. ALLBLUE I 'switched' about nine years ago, and my two iMacs have spanned 8.6 through to 10.3.9. Although I wouldn't describe myself as a 'power user', I use the machine every day, and push it hard at times, so feel comfortable and on top of the OS functionality - yet on a regular basis little tips like command - background window appear on my horizon giving another little bit of extra grooviness to an alreaedy wonderful operating system!
