AJCOOK  The twist being that the only thing it has in common with real mahjongg is the use of tiles with pictures on?

If you need to find out what mahjongg is, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjongg.

AJCOOK  Developers of this type of Game - Shanghai - always seem keen to mislead potential players that they've actually created a version of Mahjongg. If this were Mahjongg I'd buy it - it isn't.

Is the developer dishonest, or does he really not know what Mahjongg is?

CARITASTWO2  I disagree with the previous poster. This is a great Mahjongg game with a twist. There have been several Mahjongg games, but this one seems to hold my interest longer than most. Perhaps it is the gorgeous graphics? I look forward to updates of this product.

CORPSECORPS  I have to agree mostly with the first poster.

The twist of having a plot has already been done beautifully (and informatively) by Ambrosia Software with "Aki Mahjong Solitaire", and also, i believe, in Luxor Mahjong (chinese + egyptian?)

Once upon a time, most of these solitaire games were referred to as "Shang Hai", which was nice as it let people know right away that it WASN"T the actual Chinese poker-like game.

With the tiles not even bearing any resemblance to the original chinese ones, this really has no relationship to that game whatsoever.

I've only been able to locate 4 versions of real Mahjong for Mac in decades. One was pretty good but never updated for OS 9 or X. The second was an obscure Java-based cross-platform version with minimal graphics.

I had high hopes for Mah Jong Tradition, but the ui is AWFUL and it drains virtually all the intricacy and variation from the Chinese version. It even compares UNfavorably with the so-so rules established by the American Mah Jongg Association, leaving a simplified children-only version.

The last is Damejong, which until recently was only available in Chinese and may yet shape up to be something exceptional.

This tile matching solitaire business really has no business being referred to as Mah Jong at all.

AJCOOK  This is nothing like Mahjongg.

Possibly the author is thinking of Shanghi? But that is certainly not the most popular game in asia. Neither is this.
