ACCOUNTCLOSED Same here, Joel. It's not that the top item (MacUpdate Desktop 5.0) is keeping itself at the top of the list, giving the impression that the list isn't updating. The entire MUMenu list has fallen well behind the updates showing on the MU site. In other words, it isn't updating. Glad you aren't having issues with this, but a number of users suddenly are. Please look into the problem further. (Version 2.1.2)

JOEL MUELLER Desktop 5 and MUMenu aren't connected in anyway. None of the resources are shared between the two solutions. I'm currently running MUMenu and Desktop 5 on my Mac without issues. My guess is that you see MacUpdate Desktop 5 as the top listing and aren't noticing that the new releases are being updated below the top sponsored listing. (Version 2.1.2)

ACCOUNTCLOSED Nice utility, works well under 10.5.8, though user has to go to Get Info and check both "Open in 32-bit Mode" and "Open Using Rosetta" to get the thing to launch. Thanks for the great price :) and the clean look. Note that drop window does not retain toolbar prefs on relaunch (e.g., text only). FYI to developer. (Version 2.4)

Dragster | Oct 8 2009 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED A product with potential, but it seems to have been abandoned by its developer, with no upgrades in nearly a year and a half. Despite a unique interace, Dragster is missing some obvious features, including a list of shortcuts accessible through its menu bar icon, the option to customize the roll-over menu in the dock icon (e.g., remove iDisk or change icons for default pre-set items (Remote Server, Local Folder, iDisk, Email)—and the program can choke during transfer of large file. The creation of shortcuts is counterintuitive and clumsy, with no simple "Add Shortcut" option in the shortcut list window, only Delete and Edit buttons—an odd and careless omission that hurts workflow. Apart from the lack of developer attention to details and seeming abandonment of this utility, the app has promise. Ambrosia ought to pick it up again and bring it up to speed, at which point it would deserve to be considered seriously—but not until. (Version 1.0.6)

Lab Tick | Sep 25 2009 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED I couldn't get LabTick to save its "Start at Login" pref, emailed the developer, had a nice exchange, offered to help troubleshoot. This nice fellow sent me a debug build which crashed the app. That's the last I heard from him, despite three emails following up. I sent a small donation anyway, but jeesh—when someone's trying to help you out, have the courtesy to reply! As far as I know, the bug hasn't been resolved. (Version 0.9.4)

goSecure | Jul 13 2009 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED The app works simply and beautifully (MacBook Pro Intel running 10.5.6), but the best part is the support. Gordon is responsive, patient, and knows his stuff. IMO, goSecure is a solid alternative to FileLock, well worth the shareware price to support further development, and backed by first-rate tech support. (Version 1.2)

LOUNGE DELUXE I agree, goSecure is nice but very very basic and not quite feature rich. Some development over time would be nice, the last update was 16 months ago! I emailed a couple of feature suggestions to the developer but he didn't do anything with them. I'm afraid this app had been abandoned by the dev. (Version 1.2)

Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery | Jul 9 2009 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I tried running Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery on a reformatted external firewire drive. The program locked up continuously (spinning beach ball) and even took the OS hostage—would not Force Quit despite repeated attempts, scuttled the Finder, etc.—finally requiring a forced manual reboot with the power switch. I did not recover a single file using this software. Worse, despite diligent attempts by the company's tech support team to offer a number of workarounds to try (none of which were successful), customer service blithely ignored repeated email requesting that they honor the 30-Day Money Back Guarantee posted on their web site. Apparently the company's word is as defective as its flagship product. I've opened a dispute case with PayPal to contest the charge and report the company's failure to abide by its own guarantee. Note that I'm not the only user posting a comment here who ran into this problem with the seller. If you need a solid data recovery app, check out Data Rescue II by Prosoft. The product is far more stable, and recovered over 350,000 files from the formatted drive, while all Less-Than-Stellar Phoenix could do was keep hanging the system by its feet. A poor showing on all counts. (Version 3.5)

ACCOUNTCLOSED This app allows you to create custom icon sets by dragging image files into little wells in the prefs dialogue. Does ANYBODY know how to delete these custom sets? Have looked in the app's package contents, system preferences folder, library/application support—the developer must have wanted to hide the hell out of these things. Anybody? Thanks. ACCOUNTCLOSED While the calendar is attractive, it fails to automatically update to the current day, and this has to be done manually. Worse, there is no way on the developer's site to request support other than posting on a forum. Every attempt to search the forum for info from the user community on this issue returns zero hits and an error message, regardless of the search string. IMO, the developer is failing to provide even minimal support for this product—a failing unmitigated by Elgenclock's status as freeware. If you're going to put out a product for people to use, at least be available to respond to requests. It appears as though the developer essentially has abandoned this worthy app. That, coupled with the difficulty using the site to obtain support in my view justify the low rating. At present, if you use Elgenclock, you're using it "as is," and having to manually update it daily is an annoyance that the developer ought to fix promptly. (Version 0.3)

ACCOUNTCLOSED to T7: No need to take a tone. Recent posts were not "complaining." Most, including mine, were reporting issues. TOMDOHERTY Yes, the 'Can't parse' problem appears to be resolved, but another little issue seems to have arisen. My MU Menu failed to update throughout this past weekend. Updating has resumed since yesterday (Monday) but at most irregular intervals. I've mine set to auto update every 30 minutes and over the years there's almost never been a time when there was not something new ...even when I chose 'Update Now' between scheduled intervals. In the past 12 hours it has auto updated only twice and 'Update Now' reveals nothing new ever time I chose it ...very strange indeed. (Version 2.1.2)

Anxiety | Nov 23 2008 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED A nice idea, but sloppily coded. Setting prefs to launch the app on startup works intermittently at best, often not at all, making it necessary for the user to add the app manually to login items. Worse, when the app does load, it deploys its dropdown menu from the menu bar automatically, making it necessary to close it each time. Developer has not responded to email request for support regarding these issues. This is one of those apps that looks great, but one quickly learns that the looks aren't worth the headaches. Now X | Aug 21 2008 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED If you aim to wait for this developer to deliver a release of "Nighthawk" (now nearly a YEAR past the announced beta release date), think twice. It is a supreme irony that this company took the name "NOW Software." NUDC was YEARS trying to come right for OS X, and never did. To this day, the last release (5.3.2) remains quirky, and the last Leopard update available on the developer's site is dated 07 APRIL, with no ETA info on Nighthawk—not that we could believe any timetable they offered, they've moved it back so many times. After tearing my hair out over bugs that survived release after release and getting no response from the company to repeat emails, or a blithe "we're working on it," I figured they had a covert plan to run the company into the ground for the write-off, since nothing else explains such striding and relentless irresponsibility to customers. The sad bit is that NUDC in its day (pre-OS X) was far and away the best program of its kind for Mac. The much touted "Nighthawk," if it ever arrives, probably will live up to the rotten reputation this company has worked hard to earn. (Version 5.3.2)

DONMONTALVO I had high hopes for Nighthawk. But I hung it up months ago. This is vaporware. Even if they do release this, based on NUDC track record, I'll stick to Apple's built in solution. At least we never have to worry about when it'll come out or when bugs will be fixed, and it's free with OSX. I'll be happy to look at Nighthawk when it comes out, but only for kicks - I would never recommend it to any of my clients. Don Montalvo, NYC (Version 5.3.2)

ACCOUNTCLOSED I think that many of us loyal Eudora fans were thrilled to hear that a company had picked up the project of development of a true Eudora and Eudora-like successor, given the glaring failure of tje so-called "Eudora 8" based on Thunderbird, which doesn't come up to Eudora's ankles. This company, however, has seriously dropped the ball. As other reviewers have noted, this is hardly beta software. Out of 17 areas in the Settings file, only two are live; the others show "Under Development." This would be forgivable, but the web site claims that development is "close to being complete" as of 05 August. How anyone trying the software could find such a claim convincing is a bafflement. The UI is extremely buggy, the developer has not responded to emails, and tonight (11 August) is the deadline for "special pricing" of about half off. This seems to me an egregious marketing failure. If you're going to offer people an incentive to get on board early, you have to give them more than an alpha release! Users will not be eager to save even half the cost of a piece of software that's as shaky as this version, even when they're eager to believe in the project. I hope that Infinity Data gets its act together, quits making overstatements, extends the special pricing deadline so that users have something more to evaluate than an alpha-presented-as-beta release, and is able to fulfill their promise. The way the company has shoed up to date with this project is hardly confidence building. (Version 1.0b2)

ODYSSEUS They're not trustworthy at all. The initial release date of the software was supposed to be *March 15*. Software delays are of course unavoidable, but Infinity repeatedly made specific promises about delivery dates and *never* delivered. It's time to move on. (Version 1.0b3)

TinyCal | Aug 3 2008 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED Potentially a worthwhile app, but it fails to remember holiday prefs setting. Specifically, holiday days are displayed reversed, and this can get pretty cluttered. User settings give the impression that holidays can be turned off, but the program reverts to showing holidays on system reboot (though oddly, not on program restart during the same session). Developer has failed to respond to requests for support—always a turnoff. Low rating reflects bugginess and developer unresponsiveness. Suggested alternative: MyMenuDate. (Version 1.4)

Butler | Jul 23 2008 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED A sweet app. One consistent glitch I've found is that any hot corner trigger brings up an unexpected momentary square rectangle in the relevant corner before the expected blue hot corner triangle indicator. Not a big deal, but it is distracting, a bit of aesthetic carelessness that clearly shouldn't be there. Two emails to the developer reporting this bug and explicitly asking that he acknowledge receiving the bug report have gone unanswered—amounting to "no comment" and what appears to be a lack of good breeding. Still, Butler is a useful and versatile enhancement to the GUI that lives up to its press here on MU. Made my donation promptly, and more than asked for, as it seemed like a civilized thing to do. Now if we can only get the developer to be a bit more civilized. . . (Version 4.1.6)

FruitMenu | Feb 26 2008 |
ACCOUNTCLOSED Unusually shoddy work for a company that otherwise has been diligent and relatively responsible in debugging its releases. This is abysmal, even for a beta. FruitMenu doesn't read its own contents folder, but instead replaces the Apple menu with its own version of the same. Whether this is a failure of FruitMenu or of APE on which it depends is anybody's guess. As it stands, the current "beta" (read "alpha") releases make a good case for avoiding haxies altogether under 10.5 at this time. (Version 3.7b1)

ACCOUNTCLOSED This is an excellent utility. I switched from Unsanity's FruitMenu because SunnyMenu allows the user to have the same "corner menu" access, is much more customizable, and doesn't require hacking the OS. The developer is amazingly and consistently responsive, friendly, open-minded, and diligent in fixing reported bugs and posting updated releases. I especially like the user-assigned font option. With the latest release, SunnyMenu seems to have worked out the earlier bugs, and is proving stable and reliable under 10.4. Highly recommended. Grab it now. The price is low for all that the app delivers. (Version 1.18)
