Retrospect | Nov 8 2007 |
ABATES25 I've been using retrospect as the backup solution with all my clients, ranging from single-user consultants to 70+ person organizations, and have always been thrilled with it. Unlike others here, I don't upgrade any mission critical machines to the newest OS release until after the first couple months in the wild and, by following that mantra, have never had any problems. It can connect to a host of clients through a variety of methods, the backup sets can be modified as I need, and the device compatibility list grows by the week. (Version 6.1.138)

Microsoft Office 2004 | Aug 14 2007 |
ABATES25 The updaters often times don't update all applications to the newest version, but only specific parts of the office 2004 install, hence the discrepancy between version numbers... (Version 11.3.7)

Communigate Pro | Aug 10 2007 |
ABATES25 Can't say it is beautiful, but it is so far (a year of use) flawless. Easy administration, no client-side issues to date, feature-rich, though can be used is a sensible modular way (Version 5.1.11)

Parallels Desktop | Aug 29 2006 |
ABATES25 Consistently causes a panic when trying to install a guest OS on my Mac Pro (dual 3Ghz). As it has worked fine on every other intel mac I've tried it on, it obviously has only been coded for Core Duo intel-mans, and not the new Xeon chips :-/ (Version 2.2.1862.2)

MacSaber | May 26 2006 |
ABATES25 Works exactly as directed. Some of the most fun I've ever had swinging around a $3000 object. Though one would have to imagine a real light saber would cost you more. So maybe this would be more economical for Luke? (Version 1.0)

ALN*TW I'm swinging my 17"inch macbook obliviously. THIS THING IS JUST TOO COOL. I'm going over to my friends to act for Starw*ars: The Macbook Returns. (Version 1.1)

HandBrake | Apr 29 2006 |
ABATES25 I've been using Handbrake for almost two years now and it keeps getting better. Using it now as a Universal app on my MacBook, it is incredible. On my 1Ghz PowerBook, I was happy with a 15fps rip rate; now I am getting 58fps average on my rips. Awesome! (Version 0.7.1)

ABATES25 Couple things after almost a month of use... One, if you own VirtualPC 6 or 7, you probably already own a Windows license. Borrow a friends disk and install using your key. I don't think this would violate any TOS as you obviously can't install VPC (made by MS now) on an Intel Mac, so you wouldn't be installing it on two seperate systems. Two, I had to clone my mac partition to an external, wipe my boot drive, and then transfer my clone back over and rerun boot camp, Windows installer and all the other day. I won't claim to know why, but immediately after downloading Apples Windows XP iDisk utility and trying to access my iDisk (thinking this would be a great way to transfer stuff between the two enironments), Windows crashed. Couldn't get it back up. Tried to boot off the Windows XP CD, but that caused a forced restart also. From within OS X and using Boot Camp, I repartitioned my disk as one volume, but that failed. The error it gave me suggested that I back up my data, erase the drive, and reinstall everything. Which is what I did. But it was a pain, so don't try to use the iDisk utility. Use a USB keychain or something ;-) (Version 1.0b1)

FAIRMEADOW Apparently there is small print in the VPC licence that allows the embedded Windows licence only to be used in conjunction with VPC. That was the story from MS when I enquired about using the VPC/XP licence with Parallels. Given that VPC is still not supported on Intel Macs this constraint does appear rather unfair and overly restrictive. (Version 1.0.2beta)

Apple Aperture | Apr 13 2006 |
ABATES25 This update seems great, but I must ask - where is my intel support?! Apple had said it would be intel-enabled by the end of March...sigh...the price drop is nice though. (Version 1.1)

NORAA This version actually is a Universal Binary - not sure why Macupdate doesn't reflect this. You should check out the main Aperture page though, it definitely highlights the Intel support - http://www.apple.com/aperture/ (Version 1.1)

ABATES25 Comment first: Format the PC's partition as NT rather than FAT, this will help protect your mac partition from nasty windows bugs. Use something like iDisk to move data between the two easily. Also, probably a good idea to release this now before too many people mess up their cpu's trying to install using the *ahem* unauthorized method. Review: Amazing. I'm spoilt, I have a MBP, and can use this, but it is perfect! I've been able to update the firmware on my phone and load new maps onto my GPS, two things I've been grumbling to myself about not being able to do for ages. Apple will release an iSight driver for boot camp soon, hopefully; crashing the OS is funny, but probably not good. For a product tagged as a beta, it runs better than Safari did in 1.0 ;-) P.S. - I am basing ease of use on the Apple side of this, and not on how easy/hard it is to install Windows... ABATES25 Wow. Go Apple. I hadn't thought I'd see this for many months. Really, really cool. Nicest thing Apple has done for me in a while! (Version 1.0b1)

TiVoDesktop | Feb 16 2006 |
ABATES25 I should preface this by saying that I agree with others, this is waaaaayyy late in arriving. And no, it isn't TiVoToGo. But, it is a step in the right direction, if they finally have focused on updating this to work with 10.4, it shows that development is back for the Mac. As for this update, it works well, does what I was able to do before I upgraded months and months ago to 10.4. I missed this functionality as I often would show my iPhotos through TiVo when showing them to friends, and used to stream my iTunes using my TiVo all the time. Now I have a MacMini and an LCD TV, so I really don't need either of these features anymore, but they do work, and I am glad to finally seem some development for the Mac from the TiVo-team. TiVoToGo really, really soon - please?! (Version 1.9.2)
