ASMEURER This seems to have fixed the issue where it would not reload my tabs unless I opened a link from another application. My only complaint now regards search shortcut keys. I would like it if they could be activated anywhere, not just when you are in the search box. Also, when changing the search site when text is in the box, I would like it if it just changed the site and didn't open a search in a new window. (This is similar to how Acid Search worked back when it worked). That way, if I start typing a search and realize it is in the wrong engine, I don't have to cut the search, change the engine, and paste it back in just to get it in that tab. Also, this doesn't really matter, but technically, the options in New Tabs should be a group of radio buttons that are disabled by a checkbox. See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGControls/XHIGControls.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000359-SW4 Keep up the good work! (Version 1.0b17)

DOUG ADAMS ScriptPal was written for users of scripts downloaded from my site, Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes, where I intended to offer ScriptPal exclusively. (It was not my intention to have ScriptPal posted publicly, but MacUpdate has a habit of grabbing stuff like this from my site and posting it. Oh well.) I instruct users of my scripts to install them in the user's Scripts folder rather than the local Scripts folder which is why this folder is not checked for scripts. A future version may include options to examine this / folder as well as the iTunes Applications Scripts folder in the ~ and / directories that are used by the system's Script menu in the menu bar. But not very soon. (Version 1.0)

FinkCommander | Jan 31 2009 |
ASMEURER Also, "fink apropos theappyouarelookingfor" searches the descriptions too. You should also run "fink selfupdate" and then "fink update-all" every once in a while to update the fink package descriptions and update everything you have installed. Of course, fink --help will tell you all of this. Considering FinkCommander doesn't work very well (at least in Leopard), I too would recommend just using the command line. Most of these programs must be invoked from the command line anyway, so you might as well just use it. (Version 0.5.4)

ASMEURER My guess is that EasyFind is slow because it also searches contents. It probably doesn't bother using faster methods for just file names. Refresh Finder | Jan 1 2009 |
ASMEURER Network volumes are perhaps the only use for this-I haven't tested the following too much with them. The Finder will automatically update info the instant it is changed. It uses the same technology that spotlight uses to automatically include search results without constantly indexing the hard drive. Every time a file is changed or created, the system kernel indexes it to spotlight and notifies the Finder if the file is visible in one of its windows. Try it. Create a folder on your desktop called "test" and open it. Then open Terminal so you can still see the folder, and type "mkdir ~/Desktop/test/hello/" (without the quotes). You should instantly see a folder called "hello" inside your test folder. Then, make sure you can see the date and time modified for "hello". Wait until it is a different time from when you created the folder, then type "touch ~/Desktop/test/hello" in Terminal. You should instantly see the date modified change to the present time. You can try saving files while you watch the info too. The Finder is quite good at refreshing itself. (Version 1.2.3)

If there is something that doesn't work correctly or something that you would like added, just head over to their website and leave them a note on the feedback page. For example, Google Earth zooms with scrolling, but I would like to make pinching do it too. So far, it is a godsend for Safari switching tabs instead of going back and forth in the history. Replies:

AppleJack | Apr 10 2008 |
JOHN SAWYER CJS I don't think clearing all the cache locations by entering commands in single user mode is going to be practical for too many people, since there are a few too many such locations, so for now, cache cleaning utilities like Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, Cocktail, etc. are the tools of choice. But if a Mac won't start up properly or stay running long enough to allow a user to run one of these utils, it can still be done in single user mode, by just entering the same commands as one can enter in terminal--rm [pathname] (I won't list the entire set of commands here, for fear of either not getting them exactly right, or getting them right and still having someone wipe large parts of their drive's directory and blaming me). If the drive that need cache cleaning won't boot, then you'd have to boot from another drive, and use one of the cache cleaning utils to clear caches on the problem drive, but LCC is the only one I know of, that will let you clear the caches on any volume other than the startup volume. I suggested it to the author. To be able to repair permissions in single user mode, when OS 10.3 was released, required the author(s) of Applejack to do some research and experimenting (someone else figured it out for him), and they finally came up with a clever workaround, since Apple did something screwy with the "diskutil" routine starting with OS 10.3 that normally prevented permissions repair from being executed in single user mode. So, even if one issues the command, in single user mode, to run diskutil's permissions repair routine, which is mostly all Applejack had to do prior to OS 10.3, it still probably wouldn't work, because whatever limitation or oversight Apple introduced in 10.3, probably still exists. Apple has no interest in repairing permissions in single user mode, even though they've stated no reason to actively prevent it, so they haven't dedicated any useful amount of resources to fixing this bug. So, Applejack's workaround would still be necessary, and it's doubtful its commands could be entered in single user mode, at least in any semi-convenient fashion (take a look at the extra stuff that's displayed onscreen when Applejack prepares to do permissions repair--you can get some idea of some of the stuff going on behind the scenes, not shown as enterable commands). So, for the time being, utils that can repair permissions, like Disk Utility, Leopard Cache Cleaner, etc. are the only choice. I'm not sure what commands are used to accomplish the other things Applejack does. (Version 1.4.3)

Warp | Mar 17 2008 |
ASMEURER I also thought of another good feature idea. It would be nice if right-clicking on the previews would disable them so I don't have to go around them to do so. This way, I could have the delay time set to 0 seconds with no modifiers set without too much annoyance. Also, I noticed that the version number is one behind, so it thinks there is an update all the time, but the feature set clearly matches up with the current version. (Version 1.1)

ASMEURER I you have the Terminal open all the time like I do, it is much easier to just type killall Dock whenever the Dock, Spaces, the Program Switcher, Exposé, and/or Dashboard (yes, these things are ALL part of the Dock) go bad on you. The problem it that it is often impossible to do anything when some of these things freeze. What is really needed is a keyboard shortcut to restart the Dock that will work even if, for example, you are stuck changing Spaces or in Exposé and you can't do anything with any window. Retrospective | Aug 3 2007 |
ASMEURER The developer claims that he wants suggestions, so here are mine: • Over all, this is a great concept and a great app. It also works pretty fast. • Change the image icon in the toolbar. It is ambiguous; if I didn't already know what it was, I wouldn't have a clue. • Out of curiosity, does this use Spotlight? If it does, why is there not find as you type? Either way, find as you type would be good. • There needs to be some kind of icon indication in the search results bar if an item is an image. • A way to filter out white images/images with not size would be nice. I thought it didn't work at first because I pulled up a blank image. • The image search should use thumbnails, with the ability to sort them by size in case there are a bunch. Otherwise, you can only search for image names or urls, which usually aren't very descriptive. • Source coloring or the ability to open it in another app would be nice. Also, if it could highlight the search occurrence in the source, that would be helpful. • Just a list of domain names for searches. The stated purpose of this app is to find forgotten pages, and that would make it faster. Also, if domains could be unchecked from the search results, so I could eliminate the pages from domains that I know that I am not looking for. • This program is pretty straight forward, but some documentation would be nice anyway. I'm not exactly sure why the folder option is there or what it does (for different browsers?). • A little iphoto style calendar to help sort through dates would be neat. • One last suggestion: the stated purpose of this program is to find forgotten pages that were previously visited, so maybe adding a history search would be applicable. But then, there are plenty of apps (including Safari) that already do that. I hope these aren't too hard to implement, they are just ideas though. (Version 1.2b3)

Saft | Aug 3 2007 |
ASMEURER If you haven't quit Safari since losing the tabs, you can try making a copy of the Safari application in the Finder. This usually works for me: the Safari copy will open the tabs. It's also a good idea to back up your tabs with the save tabs option in the file menu every once in a while. If all else fails, you can try searching for where Saft saves the tab info with easyfind. I think it is either in the user library folder or in with the saft bundle. (Version 9.0b4)

ASMEURER The new find function is great. I hope Leopard integrates that into every program. I like the tab reordering, but there doesn't seem to be a way to move a window back into a tab unless you have tabs in both windows already (then you can drag tabs between windows), except for merge windows. Also there doesn't seem to be a way to move tabs that are in the tab menu (I have nearly 20 tabs open). (Version 3.0.2b)

ASMEURER This is going to be a great app. It already works better than iComic and Comictastic in my opinion. Here are some things that I think it needs improvement on: • Zoom buttons. I shouldn't have to use the menu bar or memorize shortcuts. • DOCUMENTATION. Please. I have no idea how to add comics. • Better interface for adding comics. The current one isn't bad, but the field names are confusing (tooltips maybe). Also, the program should be able to find a list of comics from the preloaded websites rather than having me type it in. • A better color scheme interface and preference saving. • The menu bar items disappears when the preferences window opens. • Less hidden way to mark comics as unread. A button would work best. • Automatic installation of summary files (see developer site for Calvin and Hobbes and Dilbert files). I think that Bound and Gagged should have a similar feature (text is searchable from their website. I don't know if this can be implemented in the same way). • Scroll whell support for continuous mode. • The ability to sort by date instead of comic, so I would see, for example, all of Yesterday's comics, then all of Today's comics instead of Yesterday then Today for Comic A, Yesterday then Today for Comic B, etc. • King Features support. Or are those strips available through the other websites? As far as the current program goes, I particularly like these features: • Archiving with logical image saving in the Finder. • The reflection is cool. • I like the way that you can move the comic when you are zoomed in. • Built-in comics and comic websites. • The general interface. It makes reading comics one-by-one very nice. I have one question. When it checks for updates, it says that new comic parameters are available. It click Download and it says that there are no updates. What does this mean? It doesn't seem to work (it does the same thing every time I check). (Version 0.05)
