TypeIt4Me

ZEB B  None of these programs holds a candle to Instant Text by Textware in Windows. For a serious typist, Instant Text is reason enough to stay with a PC or to run Windows in a virtual machine.

Wanted: a dev to partner with Textware and port Instant Text to the Mac.

MISHA  What does Instant Text do that's so great?

SlidePad
Oct 25 2009

ZEB B  SlidePad is not flexible. Its notes take over half the height of the screen, and this can be adjusted only minimally. I find it very obtrusive. When the developer addresses this problem, I'll consider SlidePad again.

FoxTrot Professional Search

*****

ZEB B  Nothing searches better than FoxTrot. My only gripe about it was that you could do very little with the found files except look at them. But I was wrong: I've discovered that you can drag from the list of found files into File Buddy and Leap windows. In File Buddy you can do almost anything to files except tag them, and Leap can do that. I'm now completely sold on this app.

PTHPasteboard Pro
Sep 21 2009
****.

ZEB B  I've used PTH Pasteboard for several years. I've tried most of the alternatives, including the free ones. PTH Pasteboard more than the others gets the right amount screen space, but not too much-it's configurable; shows enough of the clips to be useful, also configurable (and pops up more if you hover); and offers the most options for pasting. The Pro version was worth the investment to me: I wanted the ability to exclude sensitive information and some of the text-processing filters can be a time saver, compared to going to TextSoap. There are many options for configuring size, window appearance, and where the windows will open. On the negative side, with too many extra pasteboards, it's easy to forget which menubar symbol opens which. I find it easier to memorize the hotkeys.

All in all it's a solid product.

1Password

****.

ZEB B  Unfortunately, 1PW doesn't work with the increasing number of flash-based login screens that I encounter. Perhaps that will change with Version 3. I find myself keeping Password Wallet open to handle these situations, because it is much easier to copy and paste the login information from there. Or, I rely on flash-based cookies for these sites, something I'd prefer not to do.

The only real advantages that I see for 1PW over Firefox's password management system are the identity and wallet features, though these are frustrating sometimes (pasting an identity omits my name too often). As someone noted below, 1PW is not a good place to keep notes, compared to PW Wallet, which is much more compact.

I rate it at about 3.5.

ZEB B  Nonsense! If you think that double-clicking to save an item is "intuitive", show me another app where it is standard behavior.

ZEB B  The license is free, but the author accepts donations. If we're going to use this kind of app, it wouldn't hurt us to send the author a few dollars.

LaunchBar
Mar 8 2009

ZEB B  I'm a new Mac user and found Launchbar in one of those "absolute must have utility" lists. I tried QuickSilver also, but found launchbar easier to use. I'm still finding my way around it, but I already consider it essential.
