ZARN THE MAD  The installer refuses to install to my HD. It claims I need at least Mac OS 10.4.4 to use the software. Since I have version 10.4.11 installed, I suspect that there is an error in the installer's configuration.

And yes, it is an Intel machine (Mac Pro). :)

KELTIA  I have the same problem with 1.5.2 & 10.4.11. My main gripe with this 1.5.x series is that while an installer is nice, 1. it has never been necessary before (the application can be installed as many others, with the mouse) and 2., more importantly, it is not relocatable anymore.

Sorry, I hate applications that install themselves only in /Applications, I use /Users/Shared for third-party apps.

This is seriously backward.

ROBOTANK  Try using Pacifist to extract the application from the installer bundle. Then you can do what you wish with it, and you won't have to worry about the installer not working properly.

OZEAN  In the latest incarnation of Wesnoth (1.6 and onward) the developers went back to a standard Mac install: just drop the app icon into the Applications folder and you’re ready to go!

Birthday Bar

ZARN THE MAD  This is a wonderful idea and an excellent alternative to Growl notifications.

That having been said however -

Upon launching the program, it tried to connect to about seven different Amazon.com sites. I am not certain what information it tried to upload or download. The documentation makes no mention whatsoever of any connection with any commercial company. Thankfully, Little Snitch prevented it from connecting without my approval.

That little stunt has earned this application a fast trip to the Trash.

SHOOFILE  Birthday Bar does, indeed, connect to the internet periodically for two reasons:

First: the software will check to see if a new version is available by hitting shoofile.com once per week.

Second: the software will check the various amazon.com properties and present the user with an opportunity to go directly to that contact's wish list.

Each of these features can be turned off in the preferences by deselecting "Check for Birthday Bar updates" and "Check for Wish Lists" respectively.

I will update the documentation to address this issue in the next version.

ZARN THE MAD  When launching the application and when attempting to set it as a login item, I receive the following AppleScript Error: "System events got an error: Can't make name of every login item into type reference. (-1700).

Other than that, the application works flawlessly.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I too notice this. This has to do with a "hung" system process and a restart should fix it. (or kill 'System events' in terminal.) Nothing can be done to actually fix it -- but next version will remove the error message at least.

ZARN THE MAD  After updating to the latest program version, I found that my pets record was missing. I found that the program stores the pet records inside the application bundle. When I dragged the latest version of application bundle to my hard drive the records were overwriten with a blank record. I believe that this can be avoided by moving the records out of the bundle, like the snapshots folder is.

LASERWOLF  If you're unaware of this, there are software updaters for Mipetz. I recommend using them. That way you don't erase or change the wrong resources. If you have a previous version, select check for updates in the help menu of Mipetz and use the latest updater to update. The updater will preserve your pet record.

Bluetooth Device Inspector

ZARN THE MAD  This is a wonderful program idea. However, it did not find any bluetooth devices when run on my Mac Pro under OS X 10.4.9 even though both the Apple wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse are present as the default system devices. Battery levels for both devices are at five green bars out of five possible, in the System Preferences pane. I would like to encourage the developer to continue his work on the program.

Vulture

ZARN THE MAD  Even after downloading the latest version from the developer's website (vultures-2.0.0-eye_macosx-6.dmg) the application crashes so quickly that no crashreport is generated. The same behavior occurs with it's sister program Vulture's Claw. This is in OS X 10.4.6.
