For the sake of all users, I would simply like to add that while we can do pretty much anything we want with Playback; if the consoles (PS3, etc) themselves don't support certain features, there's no point in implementing them. Regardless, we follow-up with all console firmware releases to see what other cool things we can integrate. Playback has one of the most powerful engines in its core and we will take advantage of it at every possibility.

Based on your comments I can only say, feel free to continue using whatever application you feel is "good enough" for your needs. Playback is a rock solid performer that we developed because "we" didn't feel what was out there is "good enough" and wanted to provide an alternative that "we" feel is better. Maybe we're just very picky and have higher standards, who knows.

Rest assured though; we will continue to develop, improve, and tweak Playback the way we have outlined and in-line with the loads feedback and suggestions being received. So far, real user response continues to be nothing but encouraging and we have big ideas on the way.

To conclude, Playback is also priced to be accessible by everyone. It's $15 for 3 (three) licenses vs much higher prices for simply 1 (one) license with some of the other apps out there. Upgrades are commonplace in the industry. Eventually, even Leech (or any other software developer) will charge you (unless the developer decides he wants to work for free, which is fine).

The Speed Download 5 upgrade has undergone A LOT of under the hood changes. The entire download mechanism has been re-done and almost all features of the applications have been beefed up. Visually, there's a lot of nice changes but the true change is under the hood and there is a lot more coming (free to all registered 5.x users).

An important note is that the upgrade is OPTIONAL. The previous version SD4, is still supported.

Speed Download Lite was born out of heavy demand from our user base that felt they need not pay for features they don't use and not because of any other software. The Lite version has been stripped of everything but the download manager. However, if you have SD5, you can easily turn it into SD Lite. Simply email us directly.

If you are a registered Speed Download 5, you can easily convert SD5 into SDL if you prefer the minimalist approach of SDL. Here's how (I will be posting this on our support page as well later on today).

Step 1: Go under the Speed Download menu and choose 'Switch to Simple mode'.

This will hide and deactivate everything except the download manager part of Speed Download (even in the preferences - just like SDL)

Speed Download is an extremely customizable download manager in terms of both features and interface. Regarding the promo version of Speed Download 4 on MacHeist, there was never an agreement to offer licenses that were of equal standing to those purchased at full price via our online store.  While the software is fully functional and fully supported, the upgrade policy is different.  We regret not explicitely stating this.  We also realize the upgrade grace period that has added to the confusion.

Further, we realize now that having the upgrade pushed out via the update feature was perhaps not the best idea. The intention behind it was for practicality purposes. Clearly, the result was that it was a mistake.

We got involved without communicating our terms clearly enough and in hindsight should have sought a formal contract to at least help avoid issues such as this.

Second, no one from Yazsoft has ever mentioned anything to MacHeist about providing free UPGRADES. The fact that they posted it as such requires explanation. Whether it was a mistake or not, I'm not entirely sure yet. But in all our years, UPGRADES have always been available at a discount to registered users.

Promos are offered at a heavy discount as is which is why they are normally not accepted as discounted upgrades. We, on the other hand, are offering discounts to all MH users even though it was not our original policy. Giving it out for free is simply not possible and we have already notified Phillip Ryu to fix the erroneous posting on his site.

We truly apologize to everyone for any inconvenience this may have caused but it was not our intention and it is clearly not in our hands but we are trying to be as accommodating as feasibly possible.

People need to cover costs; development isn't free as much as we would like it to be.

Regardless, we are offering all MacHeist users the possibility to upgrade to SD5 at reduced pricing.

As we have already answered in our email to you, Speed Download DOES NOT have a call home feature. This was very clearly stated in the email response we sent to you and is posted in many different area on our website. What SD does is check to see if you have another copy of SD running on your LOCAL network with the same registration, and if so, it lets you know that you need to purchase a separate license for that second machine. There is NO call home whatsoever. SD has never, will never have that because we hate it ourselves. As I also mentioned to you, we have discounted prices for multiple licenses should you need them.

Kindly refrain from posting false and misleading information.

As for Opera integration, it's there. It's just that Opera doesn't work like all other browsers. To make SD integrate with Opera, you need to enable the SD components for all users via the ADVANCED section of the SD preferences. This is also posted on our SUPPORT/FAQ section:

If someone gains physical access to your machine and to your account, then everything on your machine could be susceptible to that person.

YAZSOFT SUPPORT  In order to avoid any misunderstanding regarding how Speed Download works, this explanation will hopefully clarify things as much as possible.

To begin with, Speed Download is not a miracle maker. It will not turn a 56K modem connection into a T1 connection. This, or some variation of this, seems to be what some people expect of Speed Download. If you are expecting such performance, you will be disappointed, as no software in the world will do this for you.

Speed Download uses segmented downloading, which is a much more efficient way of downloading than that of the conventional browser. It uses segmented downloading to overcome a lot of bottlenecks found when downloading on the Internet because download speeds are very often far from their theoretical maximums.

Why?

Well, this can be due to general congestion of the Internet but often it is because servers will try and share bandwidth between clients. Speed Download works around this and does in fact result in a radically improved download performance. SD will maximize use of the bandwidth allocated by your Internet connection. It will NOT create or invent more bandwidth for you. Naturally, the faster your Internet connection, the more bandwidth you have, and the more SD can maximize. Also, keep in mind, that some ISP providing broadband services (DSL, Cable, etc) limit the bandwidth for each of their clients so that they are able to serve more clients with the resources that they have. Just because some people are able to download at extremely high speeds, doesn't mean that everyone can get those exact rates. What SD will guarantee though, is that you always get the fastest and cleanest download speeds possible given from your Internet connection.

In addition, Speed Download offers a plethora of advantages to everyone regardless of the Internet connection, and those features are not found in your conventional browser's download manager.

SD4 was a major re-write that took about a year of development. A lot of new and exciting features were implemented and the entire interface was overhauled. As with any other developers, we incurred a lot of costs. It would have been nearly impossible to offer this as a free upgrade. We have already provided a free upgrade from SD2 to SD3 and we assumed all that was involved. It wasn't easy but we managed, and our dedication to providing the best and fastest support to all our users didn't falter. But like I said, it really wasn't easy. SD4 offers a lot more than $25 worth of benefits and hence an upgrade price of $15 is very reasonable in my opinion.

All other registered users can upgrade for the low price of $15.

All future 4.x updates are free to all registered 4.x users.

It's always better to make sure you've got the right facts before jumping to conclusions.

- go into the FILTER section of the Speed Download preferences.

- UNCHECK 'Location is relative to the defaults download folder'.

- In the Folder Name field, enter the pathname to the folder that you'd like to save to. For example, if you'd like to save the 'Applications' Filter to a specific folder on your Desktop, enter the following for Folder Name:

/Users/your_name/Desktop/folder_name

- Press Save and you're done.

You can have SD looking as plain as the browser download manager if you like. The only difference is that you'll still automatically benefit from the advanced download engine that SD 3 offers.

Again, SD is extemely well engineered to use the resources available to it very efficiently in order to deliver the best performance, and then to release those resources when they are not used.

YAZSOFT  The scenario you are decsribing could be indicative of a problem completely unrelated to Speed Download. If SD doesn't automatically launch, then you either did not install it properly, or the launchservices files on your Mac OS X system are corrupt.

Also, there is no way the uninstaller will not restore your system to how it way before you installed Speed Download. All you have to do is quit all your browsers and run the uninstaller.

YAZSOFT  The file did download, just once.

The thing with sourceforge is that they use a script to automatically download the file in question. Hence, after you download SD tries to send you back to the page you were at before you downloaded but since that page contains a script to automatically download, you get the looping effect.

The workaround is to simply surf out of that page or to close. Regardless, we are looking for a better solution to this.

If you go into the Speed Download 3 preferences, and into the GENERAL section, you can choose your setup type. If you choose 'Manual', then SD 3 will install no components on your system and you will be able to use it when you choose.

Simply restart your browser after you make the preference change. You can easily switch between 'Automatic' and 'Manual' mode in SD 3.

We are currently looking into this. However there is a confirmed fix for now:

- Quit all browsers and any running copy of Speed Download.

- Run the SD 3 Uninstaller

- Log out and log back in.

- Empty the trash.

Re-launch SD 3.

All should be well now.

YAZSOFT  IE is no longer a supported browser for SD 3 simply because Microsoft no longer supports it as well, and the plugin architecture in IE is too old.

However, you can actually continue to use the old SD 2 plugin with IE, if you set SD 3 to manual, and then run SD 2 to install the plugin. You would need

to install the enhancer by hand if you wanted it.

Advice: we recommend you use a more moden browser like Safari, Firefox, etc..

YAZSOFT  Make sure that Growl is properly installed on your system. Then go to the Mac OS X system preferences. If Growl is properly installed, you should see it there. If so, select it, and go into the Applications tab. This is where you should see SD 3 and configure its settings for Growl. YAZSOFT  You can actually do that now. Simply go into the SD preferences, and into the 'Interfaces' section. You can enable/disable any of the sections you like. In addition, you can completely resize the column separating the left pane from the right pane, so as to make SD look exactly like your browser's download manager if you prefer that look. YAZSOFT  Yes, all this is is version checking to make sure you are using the latest version of SD. You can easily disable that in the Speed Download preferences, under the 'MISC' section. Simply UNCHECK 'Check for updates on startup'.

SD will continue to work even if you decide not to update. If you are still having problems, please email us or you can refer to our FAQ and SUPPORT pages which document this pretty nicely. There are no known bugs/issues with SD 2.3.3 at this date.
