Razer Pro HID Drivers | Jun 25 2006 |
WRAITHE Well, true to my word, I uninstalled SteerMouse and installed the latest (1.6.5) drivers. I remove all my previous complaints. Well, O.K. no, I don't, so I guess I should say "They finally got it right". As I have said before, this is an excellent mouse, and it now finally, has a Mac OS X driver worthy of it. I'm impressed that they actually stuck with it and did the work, rather than licensing someone else's existing driver. This mouse drive A) fixed all the issues that I've been complaining about, and B) provided you with all the smoothness and accuracy that this mouse is capable of. (I'm back to being accused of cheating in online games again :)) I have seen none of the problems I originally had, and have had no new ones raise their heads. I still find myself somewhat unimpressed by the breadth of the options for the buttons, but being able to set them to "pass through" from Mac OS solves that handily. Good work, guys! WRAITHE So, for the big stack of people who have been disappointed with the Razer drivers, I thought I would update my previous comments/review with something to help, potentially. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19058 I've been completely happy with my Razer since getting this software, what's more you can really get the feel between the Razer and a "regular" mouse. Note: I have not tried the latest update to the Razer driver, and based on past experience, have no urge to, although maybe I will, just to be "fair". I'll report back if I do. (Version 1.6.5)

SoftRAID | Jan 18 2006 |
WRAITHE *sigh* My "poor attitude" comes from people whining about a product not offering something that's not necessary. SoftRAID is a good product, _for what it does_. You want a reliable RAID 5? You need to buy HARDWARE. I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. You can't afford the hardware for RAID 5? RAID 5 capable controllers run ~$250 (try the RocketRAID 2220). So basically you're kvetching about spending an extra $100 to get that. tomax, RAID 5 is not a backup solution. I just finished trying to recover data for a company that thought RAID 5 meant they could live without a backup. They got 25% of 300GB back. So enjoy your RAID 5 and when it "buggers off" with your data that you aren't backing up..."kthxbye" "plenty of money"? My primary system, a G4 Sawtooth is laughing at you, now. (Version 3.3)

WRAITHE First off, if you game, run out and buy one of these mice. NOW. I'll wait.... O.K. now...do NOT DL this software. Or if you do, be prepared to uninstall it. Sadly, I can't agree with the previous posters review. While I do like the ability to change the sensitivity of the mouse on the fly, it simply doesn't make up for the deficiencies of this software. If you install this software, you will not: Be able to use the center button as a CMD-click, which is useful in most web browsers to spawn new window. Weirdly, this is what Mac OS X does by default, this will override it Be able to assign the mouse buttons to Exposé. Again, OS X sees it, doesn't work. Be able to assign ANY kind of click to the buttons that involve a click+anything else. This is just sad. While I love my Razer, their software reeks of Windows, not for the interface, which is very nice, but for the limited mindset. I wonder if their Windows driver is this bad? Seriously, get the mouse. Do not install this software unless you can live with the limitations. Go buy USB overdrive (Which is what they used to recommend), or live with the default OS X mappings. As soon as I hit "post" on this, I'm deleting the driver off my system...again. (Version 1.6.2)

WRAITHE Yeah! They're falling behind, against other products that support Software RAID level 5, Like...um....some company...and...those guys!....and..well, O.K. NO one offers Software RAID 5, and while it can be hacked in to some OS's it runs with a huge performance hit. Why on earth would they add something that's going to perform badly? You want RAID 5, buy the right hardware to do it right. Personally, I'd rather they keep improving the product (like they're doing). Prove you wrong? Why should they bother, when you prove yourself wrong so well? (Version 3.2.1)

W. IAN BLANTON I suggested just this option to the nice folks at InTech, and we had a nice discussion of why automated fixing is a Bad Idea. If you like, you can go over to the forums on their site and read it. I have rigged up automation for it myself using QuicKeys. Was pretty easy. (Version 2.3)

Kill Monty | Mar 27 2005 |
WRAITHE Well, so the previous poster had no clue. This is an _updated version_ of "Kill Dr. Cote" from Freeverse and the _original author_. It was worth it, the graphics are a bit slicker and the sound is addictive. I'm kinda immune to these simple games nowadays, but this one sucked me in for quite a while. Good gameplay, a bit rough to play on a powerbook. I love the laser, and the fact that the weapons "powerups" stack, so the more you pick up the same powerup, the more powerful it becomes. Sucks when you run across a different one. :) Only problem I've had so far, is a weird sound drop-out after playing for a while. (Version 1.0.1)

WRAITHE You know what *I* hate?? Stupid people who are so anxious to show off and bash something that they can't be bothered to do the 30 seconds of research required to back up their comments. The guy who made "Kill Dr. Cote" IS the guys behind "Kill Monty", Looks like Freeverse is publishing it, and they "updated" the graphics and sound. Maybe if you'd checked the designer's website: http://www.justinfic.com/. Next time, use a brain cell or two, first, huh? (Version 1.0.1)

W. IAN BLANTON Get a clue? That was the most verbose posting of the words "I have no self-esteem" that I've seen this side of /. Calling people "Nuts" and "stupid" because they don't wanna learn term commands? That's just swell, why don't you go back to WordStar while you're at it? (Version 0.2)

Do Something When | Jun 17 2004 |
WRAITHE Working fine now, looks like. VERY interesting idea, something that Apple used to have in betas of OS X, nicely implemented. I can see a LOT of useful things to do with this prefpane! (Version 1.0.1)

BootCD | May 28 2004 |
WRAITHE Be aware that Mac OS X starts up very slowly from CD's if you have the full OS (ie: something like BootCD) installed on the CD. This is relatively normal. (Version 0.6)

WRAITHE Well, with this update, it's pretty much done. This is also great for the light-sensitive. (Version 1.1)

W. IAN BLANTON I specifically did not pay for this program when it came out at an introductory price. I _specifically_ waited until he jumped the price, simply because this is the kind of software that Mac users should be proud to have on their platform. It does a great job (several of them in fact), and not only is it updated regularly and improved (not just bug-fixed), it's almost updated too often. :) Worth the price, _every penny_.
