WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Thanks, I just went there myself, and got the update, but it still says it can't be used on this computer. A bit baffled because even older screen savers, including the old version of Electric Sheep, work as-is on my intel laptop also running 10.6.1. But this is not specific to Electric Sheep -- same story also with other supposedly SL compatible screen savers, such as Euphoria 10.2.

Since this is OT, if anyone else is having general issues (or better yet, knows the solution), try looking at this thread:

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  As a user, I understand why you think that way. I've been forced to pay for a lot of compatibility upgrades over the years, and several after Snow Leopard. But as a developer, I can tell you that the amount of time required to make products compatible with Snow Leopard can vary widely. In some cases it's changing a few build settings in XCode, but in many cases it takes countless hours of tedious re-writing code and testing on multiple platforms. While my company, WBC, so far has just eaten these costs (mostly to sanity) and won't charge for updates, I have been thinking more than once in the past two weeks that perhaps I should. Anyway, point being is there's no telling what's involved in rebuilding this screen saver -- but I hope if it is not too complicated the dev doesn't take advantage.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  As far as I can understand it, any process that performed the function that this does would have to somehow insert itself into other applications, which is what APE already does. It's true that APE can cause conflicts (and also true you can exclude applications) but I'd much rather rely on APE from a solid entity and run so many people than encourage lots of separate developers to duplicate what it already does and cause lots more potential instability.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  For the record, although we did not agree with the sense of dire urgency of the tone of this person, we have taken to heart these concerns.

Although for many years WBC has sent out betas to groups of people who have reported problems with a particular version, without any complaint, from now on we won't do this without asking first.

Also, we were not at all "very offended" when this person "suggested" we "should use Bcc". She stated that she was "very surprised" and "upset". We simply tried to explain our view on the matter. She responded to her professed privacy concerns by sending out a blanket email to everyone on the original list, which we felt completely contradicted her position.

At any rate, we regret the whole incident.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  It looks slick. But I have to pipe in here that I was also thrown off by the statement "the correct way", which also made me wonder if just copying and pasting was not sufficient for Leopard. All I'm saying is that seems a bit misleading, unless you have some evidence that the method you're employing does something different or better -- rather than just offering a simple and attractive interface.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  One of the ways WBC keeps prices low is to insist on a try before you buy policy. We value the spirit of shareware, which is that you pay when you are satisfied. We do not monitor registration codes, and we issue refunds only in the rare case the product doesn't work as described and it cannot be fixed. The fact that iDupe and other WBC is Mac only is stated clearly in many places on the WBC web site, including the FAQ and directly below the "Buy Now" button. For some reason, Windows users seem unwilling to read a very sparse product description -- let alone the FAQ or the refund policy -- before clicking buy.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  The errors related to "adding relative alarms to Events" was due to a bug in Leopard. It had not been caught until I saw this posting. It is now fixed in 1.1.2. Other mentioned bugs I have not been able to reproduce. The GUI crash may be related to the first bug. Once again, it will be much more helpful to communicate with developers when software has problems so that those problems can be fixed. Developers may only read forum comments when they post new versions if at all, so that just delays getting them fixed.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  It shouldn't be necessary to delete any older version from your system entirely, but that's always good advice. what IS necessary is to quit any older version before launching the new one, and if you have added an older version to your login items at a different location, make sure the old one is removed first.

If you follow the install instructions included (quit old version and replace then launch) it should be fine.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I addressed my response to your complaint on the OmniGrowl page before I saw that this had apparently been a persistent issue for you. You do realize the infrequent nags do say OmniGrowl and you would have had to have installed it yourself. Furthermore any notification can be turned off -- including the nags. The documentation included with OmniGrowl states this, as does the welcome message.

No offense, but before you complain in public fora about software, it would be nice if you took the trouble to have a look at the manuals -- or at least read carefully the messages you are complaining about.

My apologies to the Growl team for the confusion generated nevertheless.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I prefer to call it donationware but yes nagware is ok too. I do call it donationware in the documentation and it does list the nags among the notifications, which can be turned off.

I never (and nowhere) call it freeware myself. Unfortunately neither VersionTracker nor MacUpdate have a category called donationware -- it's either freeware or shareware and neither fit. Please take this up with VT & MU, as I too would like to see such a categoy.

Since it's not shareware (OmniGrowl is unrestricted and you are not required to pay or donate. Unlike some of my other software (iDupe, Cast Away etc) which is ALSO not restricted but you are technically required to pay and so those are in fact properly called shareware.)

For details see my FAQ:

http://www.woodenbrain.com/index-support.html

OmniGrowl is more closely called freeware since as I say you don't have to pay. But again, you're correct that its not exactly right since I make it clear I hope for some donations. But quite a lot of freeware does too -- it's just a matter of the persistence of the nagging I imagine.

Let me take this opportunity to nag one more time. 20,000 downloads and counting and as of v. 1.4.5 I had one donation. Adding a second nag got me 2 or 3 more. Thank you to those who did donate.

If you don't want to donate so be it, but at least have the courtesy to just turn off the nags and not rate a product you probably are using for free tepidly just because of it.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Unfortunately this review is abolutely right on. Over the years I've given iListen several chances. Each time I've come out feeling like I wasted my time training it. And yet it appears the best there is -- better than ViaVoice (does that even exist anymore?). I also read the David Pogue review in question and wonder about Naturally Speaking. Of course Pogue suggested that it was "Mac compatible" as I recall because it ran under emulation. In my opinion that's a stretch. Have you tried it using Parallels with other software running on OS X? I wouldn't want to have to reboot just to dictate.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I don't care how MANY updates there are as long as one of them FIXES existing problems introduced in the rush to get out 7.3. Most specifically, corrupt libraries, crashes on startup or during library updating, and rampant memory gobbling. Long desired core features such as separate shuffle settings per playlist, skip to next / previous album. It would also be great to have missing AppleScript functions finally implemented like working skip to next chapter, fetching podcast chapter art, control of airtunes speaker settings, podcast release dates, and much else.

But I agree with the basic sentiment here -- deal with the long standing gaps and recently introduced nightmarish bugs before piling on more new features.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  With all due respect, that's a pathetic response. A 3rd party developer is proving something that Apple doesn't provide on its own, and asking for some compensation. If you feel this should be included in the OS (which I think it should) then take it up with Apple. They are relatively good in other ways in including OS components such as Universal Access which make it easier for people with disabilities to use the computer. So maybe they'll listen regarding subtitling. For now, if you want a free option, you could try VLC. And one should mention that subtitles are probably of much more use for language translation than captioning.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  This is a nice idea but puzzling. Is it just a series of photos or actually a clock? If it is photos, how could it work as a world clock? Some further explantion would be helpful.

Also, given the instructions on the installer, it's difficult to see why an installer is needed. Presumably it just installs some photos to ~/Users/Shared/ and then you add those photos in iTunes? If everything installed is going into an open permissions folder, then it is difficult to see why an installer is required.

Furthermore, the installer attempts to connect to the internet, which is what makes me wary in the first place.

Papers
Apr 25 2007

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  iTunes may move your files when adding to it's library but it doesn't rename them, and certainly not by default. And one thing that differntiates a pdf file and an mp3 file is metadata tags, so even if an audio file is renamed you can rename it back based on tags. I also notice in Papers prefs the default is to "copy" to library, and "delete original file" is not selected by default. Nevertheless on my test file the original was not copied but moved. The rest of it is nicely thought out as long as you then "tag" your pdfs immediately by author and journal, I can live with the reoganization. The difficulty comes if you decide you don't like papers before you get around to "tagging" everything. Because those "tags" i presume are internal to the Papers database and do not become file properties. I recommend that the original path be retained, and when exporting the option be given to restore name and path.

Anyway, like I said this is promising. As soon as a) global searches are possible and fast and b) there is some tighter integration with EndNote and/or BookEnds, and c) social sciences & humanities repositories are supported internally, this will be very worthwhile.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  This works great for what it claims it does. I find it hysterical that it's made by Freeverse, the same culprits that make major game distractions that are to blame for untold months (in total) of mucking about. Now then, this would be ideal if it took over CMD-Tab from the system to switch apps, and/or if there were a global hotkey to activate it, and/or you could use the keyboard to switch apps. There seems to be a minor glitch with two monitors: sometimes it dims only one until you switch to it and mess with its controls.

At this point, DEVONThink Pro seems to be a better option. However I wish there were something that integrated DTP, MS Word, Endnote X, Bookends, Mellel, and something like this.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Promising. But I'm not happy with the way this modifies my files and would not recommend that anyone use this at this point without know what it is doing. I dragged a pdf file in my own folders organized by journal in the Finder, to the main windows of Pages, and it moved that file to Pages own propriety file structure in ~/Pages/Unknown/. Not only that, it renamed the file as well to "2004". Not nice do do by default.

It somehow guessed the year was "2004" but there's nothing I can see that would have lead to such a guess -- not the file modification date and nothing in the text of the pdf itself. (The test article was actually 1967 ;-)

Also, it's unclear at this point what a workflow would looklike that would integrate with EndNote (or bookends, etc). You can export to EndNote (nice, but not tested), but this wouldn't necessarily allow easy synchronization.

Also the only integrated "repository" is PubMed -- I wonder what it would be like if it supported other major databases for PDFs, like JSTOR.

**...

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I so much wanted the other reviewers to be wrong on this -- I've always wanted a really good sea life related action game. Can you imagine a Nanosaurus where you play a medium size fish and have to feel the experience of being preyed upon, but then grow bigger & bigger? All amidst some surreal 3D graphics? OK not everyone's kettle of fish but... Unfortunately, this game well, isn't like that. It's a cute exercise in point-and-click. It kept my attention for about 30 seconds beyond the 30 seconds it took to actually get to the game with the intro. Amazing graphics -- I think not. Cutesy sort of. Possibly good for small kids who should learn how to move a mouse around and click on things.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I was kind of thinking the same thing. And in the screen shot you see that path button right next to this "parent folder" button. Sort of missing the point of having too separate buttons also.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Nice to see some free options. I launched it then saw it relied on Perian. I can't remember what it was exactly but I have uninstalled Perian due to a conflict with another CODEC. It would be nice if this didn't rely on Perian. The other options must rely on something else?

CHIMOOSOFT  Many of the other options use VLC under the hood for the conversions. QuickTime seems to do a better job from what I've seen, so some Perian or another QuickTime component which can import flv2 files is required.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  This is a brilliant idea and was something I had in mind to write myself! Glad someone else did it, thanks.

The good: Does a nice job at what it claims to do (though could be improved, see below), guessing times like "5-ish" correctly as 5pm even; Good interface; last used calendar is used as default; free!

Needs improvement:

1. text in the notes field in the popup window can't be selected and dragged or even copy & pasted onto fields. This is important for instance to set label and location for instance. The term "label" is not helpful; even though that's what Apple calls it, I think people think of it as "name" or "title".

2. should work with any selectable text, not just email. I tried with MS Entourage and was happy to find it worked, but it doesn't show up in Safari.

3. one way to guess location would be by looking for an address, as in ####text

Not-working: changing hot key as described. When changed, new key equiv. does not appear in menu nor does it work when pressed. Perhaps logout is necessary but nothing else I tried (killall, run restart services, quit & relaunch apps) seems to work. The default hot-key conflicts with Translate service, which is a widely used Service. Would be nice to be able to specify this preference anyway without resort to a plist editor. also makes upgrade difficult.

The strange: installation location. Why /Library/Application Support/ and not /Library/Services or ~/Library/Services/ ?

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I have not tried this, but as a developer of iTunes related products (Cast Away, iDupe, OmniGrowl, etc.), let me say that my guess is that this cannot work with very large libraries the way it is probably designed. Most likely it gets a list of all your artists and then searches for matches on on-line databases. OnTour has a dashboard widget that works that way and has the same problems. Developer -- please correct me if I'm wrong.

OmniGrowl, which features concert notifications also, takes a different approach to cope with large libraries -- it periodically searches the online data sources and then searches your iTunes library for matching artists. But it does this only once hourly and does not attempt to get a list of all artists (which is guaranteed to hang iTunes with large libraries).

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  I'm not sure what features it needs, but the parameters mode of opensrt looks good. i have been unable to use this to clean srt files for a philips dvp 642. (they are unrecognized even after cleaning). it would be brilliant to have some os x software that actually fixes the problem. anyway thanks for the efforts.

Mac OS X Daylight Saving Time Software Fix
Mar 6 2007

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  the problem is more than just automation -- not letting the system know about daylight savings times rules could mess up all sorts of internal system functions as well as iCal, etc. there is a lot to read on this issue if you google for DST bug.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Big props to Aspyr for updating this game! This was and is one of the most original FPS games ever released. Interesting plot development, beautiful and quirky graphics, insanely cool weapons. It's dark and somewhat brutal without being gory and gratuitous.

If only MacPlay would update Giants (which I haven't been able to get to work on newer computers for years), you'd be looking at two of the best Mac FPS games brought to life.

OmniGrowl
Jan 15 2007

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  OmniGrowl comes with an application to quit it right in the folder. It now comes with a script to quit it. It also includes an info section with a clearly marked section on how to remove. I'm sorry to be blunt, but users badly need to read documentation sometimes.

But for the record, the removal process involves:

1) quitting the application using the included quit script, from the script menu, or any other way you like.

2) removing it from login items if you added it to login items in the Accounts preference pane

3) trashing the application folder.

That's it.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  Yep, AudiScrobbler is it! I may incorporate last.fm support into OmniGrowl later, thus dispensing of the need for audio scrobbler too ;-) (menuet also has last.fm and growl support, but is $$)

OmniGrowl

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  nadamac: actually as of the current version of Growl, Growl does not give iTunes notifications on its own. It does come with a menu extra you can install, and there are a lot of other 3rd party programs that give iTunes Growl notifications. You must have installed one of these before. The disadvantage of many of them, including the menu extra (GrowlTunes) that comes with Growl, is they have to appear in the dock or the menu bar. OmniGrowl is faceless. Furthermore, iTunes notifications is not at all the main purpose of OmniGrowl. The idea is to handle a whole range of notifications in one application, so there is no need to run 50 little tools for 50 kinds of notifications ultimately.

MoveTunes
Mar 3 2006

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  MoveTunes should definitely retain ratings, played count, and BPM, if that option is selected.

It is possible that if it did not, it was related to the bug mentioned in the 1.3.1 release notes (not removing from library), but I cannot be sure.

Please try the new version and if that also doesn't work contact support.
