WILE E.  To GREGJ:

Obviously you have had a lousy experience and I suspect that nothing said here by anyone will change your mind but for someone who wants nothing to do with Alsoft or DW you seem to be spending a lot of time watching their product. If your hope is that an emotional rant will influence people to side with you against Alsoft I believe you will be disappointed.

Alsoft has been using the current updater method for a long time and lots of people have tried to update a previously updated disk unsuccessfully. It has been clear from Alsoft that the original disk must be used to run the updater to produce an updated disk. Perhaps you have been the (un)lucky one that managed to keep updating updated disks without the original disk but somehow I doubt if that is the whole story.

To criticize Alsoft for wanting to make money is pretty naive - they are in business to make money. To say they don't care about their customers is narrow minded in my opinion and certainly not my experience with them.

WILE E.  After trying and having it fail after entering my info and the SN I tried a Safe Boot with the same result.

Eventually what worked for me was to use my old, installed, copy of Disk Warrior to rebuild the Directory of the newly made disk image *before* entering my personal info and the Serial Number. It fixed a number of issues on the image and it then burned perfectly.

I have booted my machine with the new CD and will say that this version is noticeably faster to start from the CD and performs the Rebuild faster as well. I did not time it but it was noticeable for me.

Except for the significant problem many are having creating an updated disk with this new updater this would rate 5 stars so I decided to rate the Ease of Use low although it almost doesn't fit that category.

WILE E.  To blame Alsoft because you threw away your original disk is quite unfair. They have had this policy in place for quite some time and in your own words you have burned updated disks along the way so you obviously should have known to keep the original disk.

I don't particularly like the method they provide to update disks and until this update it has always worked perfectly. Obviously it is a way for them to try and rein in piracy and who can fault them for that. I suppose you would have been happier to have Alsoft charge you every time they have to provide a bootable disk when a new OS or updated version is released.

WILE E.  I don't see how to respond to the comments from the Developer directly in this forum.

Part of what you said was "Ideally it would have been nice to contact me about this instead of posting a slightly negative review assuming things about the screensaver."

I see no where to actually do that but did look. I read the read me and license with the saver, looked on your web site, and also clicked on your name in the Reviews and comments at MacUpdate but got told you don't exist.

As far as my assuming things about the saver it seems to me that in Quartz composer when you select a new ScreenSaver project the Web Page URL is optional and would require user input to link it within the project as well as provide a URL. If I am misunderstanding how this typically works then my apologies.

WILE E.  I decided to try this out and let my machine activate the saver. Typically, if I have a saver running I will just hit the Space Bar to return to the Finder. I did so and was quite surprised to see Safari launch and take me to a French web site. Initially I thought one of my grandchildren had mucked about with something until a little more exploring made me realize the Dev had set it up that way.

I don't appreciate being directed to any web site that way and think the Dev should have been upfront about that "feature". I have searched the read me's and the web site but find no reference that deactivating the saver will launch Safari and take you to a site without user knowledge or approval.

Excluding this faux pas I like it and give credit for a nicely compiled saver. I chose to edit the copy I have to eliminate taking me to your site.

MICHAëL FORTIN  Thanks for taking the time to post a review, but I must inform you that I did not know about this behavior. The webpage URL redirection is a default behavior created by Quartz Composer when a screen saver template is chosen. In no way did I tell it to redirect to my webpage, in fact I just learned it did. Sincerely I think I have nothing of value for any users of the screen saver on my webpage right now apart from the screen saver, lol.

Actually I was able to reproduce this on my computer, but only when the option to require passwords after the computer enters the screen saver is deactivated. I usually lock my computer when the screen saver activates so I didn't see this.

Ideally it would have been nice to contact me about this instead of posting a slightly negative review assuming things about the screensaver.

Anyway the next version which I'm working on right now will not have this redirection. Thanks for your time!

MICHAëL FORTIN  I agree the contact info is not very accessible on my webpage, I'll make it more visible soon.

And you are right when creating a QC screen saver project it requires manually adding the url in the patch, but I had no idea it would cause a redirect when pressing the space bar. I'm not a veteran of Quartz Composer you know.

WILE E.  Your comments don't really qualify as a review but I would suggest you go to CoolIris Support and send them all your info. Their support is very responsive. Perhaps your trouble is something specific to your setup. I don't see any high CPU use, in fact it is quite small for me on Safari. I don't usually use FireFox but do have it and have downloaded the FF version to try out.

WILE E.  While I don't rely on many plugins for Safari this is one I can't do without. It has never caused any grief for me in the way that some poorly written InputManagers can.

It is an elegant visual and navigational aid, in the Cover Flow style, for most any content you can view online.

Support has been stellar. When Safari 4 (final) was released it broke the CoolIris version available at that time. I wrote to support and received a reply right away and another notice when an updated version was released a few days later. Excellent work.

WILE E.  Did you open Airport Utility and check for the update under the Airport Utility Menu? That is where you learn if it is available to your setup.

WILE E.  I just allowed Airport Utility to check for, download, and then install the Firmware Update.

No problems here. Went without a hitch.

Total time took less than five minutes to check for the update, download it and restart the Airport Extreme.

WILE E.  Although I am a recent convert to CosmoPod I have been very impressed and bought a license immediately. The cost of a license right now is too good to pass this by.

Smooth, fast, and seamless to both download and convert virtually any video. The ability to edit metadata is a powerful addition. Works perfectly under the recent release of Safari 4 Beta for me.

Well done.

WILE E.  If you are using any third-party plug-ins that live in the Input Managers Folder in either the main Library Folder or your Users Library Folder try removing them and try again. Plug-ins can be notorious for causing unexpected grief while some just quietly stop working.

WILE E.  It would seem that the few folks at Proteron have disappeared. I had an issue from August 2007 that was never really addressed. Had two replies at the time promising I would hear from the main developer - never did.

Lately a new issue has cropped up and seems to be a bug with how Proteron utilizes the upper right corner. Repeated attempts to contact support have been left unanswered.

I have always loved this little program but it has become unusable for me and without any support backing it up any longer I am disappointed to have to let it go.

Even more disappointing is that is still listed as a MUPromo item which suggests they are still around somewhere where they can collect money even if they ignore support requests or deal with problems.

WILE E.  I tried a demo of this app and was pleased to get it with the MacUpdate Bundle recently. Easy to use, stable, and with a single click can save the page as a pdf, print it, present it in an e-mail, or take you back to the site. For my needs this is a perfect application done well although, arguably, a bit pricey.
