Xslimmer | Sep 4 2009 |
WALRUSCP This app has a great developer behind it. I was the one (or one of the ones) who discovered the blacklist bug fixed in 1.7.2, and throughout the process the developer was pleasant and responsive. As for Xslimmer itself, it has claimed untold MBs on my MacBook's hard disk, working as advertised. Occasionally you run across an application that gets screwy after slimming, but that's what the back-up and restore options are for. Most apps that will be troublesome when slimmed are on the blacklist. Overall, this is a very easy to use app that is a must-have for mac owners who need to squeeze as much memory as possible out of their hard drive. Highly recommend it! (Version 1.7.2)

Chax | Sep 2 2009 |
WALRUSCP Chax cannot work as it did in 10.5 because 10.6 no longer allows input manager hacks like Chax to run in 64-bit mode - hence the new implementation. Otherwise, you'd be stuck having to run iChat in 32-bit mode in 10.6. I actually like the new standalone - maybe it's just perception, but it seems a bit more stable for me. This app remains a must-install for anyone using iChat. (Version 3.0a3)

WALRUSCP Memory and performance continue to improve, but still more of a memory hog than Typinator. After a while TE shoots up to 186 MB RAM used (I have 2705 snippets) whereas Typinator consistently stays around 20 MB RAM used with the same number of snippets. It could be a memory leak, since TE generally starts and stays around 40 MB or so. Usually find it shoots up after a day or two. (Version 2.6.2)

Tweetie | Jun 15 2009 |
WALRUSCP Sorry for the second post, but I forgot the following for fixing requests: 1. Weak highlighting of selected tweets (Bring back the blue or give us a preference option to customize) 2. When we have the preference selected to dim previously read tweets, marking all as read should dim all the tweets - as of now it does not 3. Growl notifications - it's better, but still needs work on the issue with old tweets being announced as new when first loading the app 4. Avatar caching - every other client has fixed the issue with changed user avatars - Tweetie needs to stop showing blank avatars in these instances 5. See my comment above about the preview links issue Just some of the major sticking points for the current Tweetie version that need to be addressed. (Version 1.2.2)

WALRUSCP Alright - Atebits fixed several bugs with 1.2.2!! Now if they can just fix the problem where previewing shortened URLs ignores the preference option to open links is the background. Then we can start adding more features and make this a dream client. (Version 1.2.2)

WALRUSCP $15-20 is pretty much the price point for higher end Twitter clients (e.g., Twitterific is $15). I bought Tweetie while it was on sale early on, and I have to say I like it for its simplicity and clean interface. I also love Eventbox, and pull that out when I am doing heavy lifting social networking (Google Reader, Twitter, Facebook, etc., etc.). Atebits should probably consider pricing Tweetie at $13-15 to directly compete with Twitterific. I think they'd find a lot of success in doing so. (Version 1.2.2)

WALRUSCP My only real complaint right now is the Growl notifications: I still get alerts for old tweets (especially @replies to my accounts) every time I load Tweetie up. WALRUSCP I agree 100% - nice twitter client, but should be priced at $10 or so; especially when you can get EventBox for the same money and get a ton more features. Still, I would spend the money on Tweetie over Twitterific if I had to choose. (Version 1.0)

Amnesia | Apr 8 2009 |
WALRUSCP Amnesia is another foray into the application uninstaller realm, and I have to say it's off to a solid start. While AppCleaner (freeware) is probably a little better right now, Koingo is obviously working hard to make Amnesia one of (if not) the best uninstaller out there. It seems to find all the pertinent files for the apps I have tried it out on, though I am sure like other uninstallers it misses some files for various apps that install files in odd places. Koingo has improved the scanning function considerably in just the first week, and I can only assume they will continue to do so. Amnesia does find a bunch of apps that I cannot imagine anyone would seriously uninstall via this app (printer utilities, System Alerts and other assorted buried system apps) - it would be nice if Koingo could at least grant users the option to filter those apps out. Drag and dropping an app onto Amnesia for removal like you can with AppCleaner would also be a nice feature to add as would be adding auto scanning when deleting an app by dragging it to the trash (like Hazel). All in all, it's at least as good as everything else out there. If Koingo can keep tweaking it as they have been, it could be the best. (Version 1.0.3)

WALRUSCP This is still in the beta phase, but is imho the best social network client out there. If you utilize Facebook, Twitter, RSS, Google Reader, Reddit, and Instapapper this is a must-have. WALRUSCP Great little piece of software that fills a big need for anyone who uses their iSight camera. The functions in iGlasses really should be built into the OS by default, but the $10 spent to get them is well worth it. The interface and integration into the OS and supported applications (most that if not all that use your iSight or webcam) is seamless, and I have experienced any ill effects on CPU or memory in using iGlasses. I highly recommend it, as it has significantly improve the picture quality of my macbook's iSight. (Version 2.1.1)

Corkboard | Dec 11 2008 |
WALRUSCP I just bought this over at MacZOT after seriously considering purchasing it here when it was featured as a Promo. I have to say, I am impressed for two big reasons. FIrst, this app is probably the best clipboard manager I have ever used. I was disappointed with iClip and others, as they were too clunky to use to really augment my workflow in a meaningful way. CorkBoard is seamless in it integration into the OS - it's like having a Dashboard like app for your clipboard. Heck, it uses 64-bit technology which makes it extremely responsive. The history function is terrific and works as advertised, and retrieving old clipboard material is as easy a double clicking. This is really going to make my work a lot easier. Second, the tech support is about as good as it gets. I found that there were some serious issues when handling tables with the app (lock ups within the app). I contacted the developer, and within a day he fixed the problem and sent me a test copy to confirm the fix. I have never had a developer do this, and I have to say it is a gratifying feeling to have such personalized attention given to me. This is a young app in the grand scheme, so there are bound to be some bugs like the one I experienced, but the developer is obviously committed to his users and making this a top-notch mac app. I highly recommend CorkBoard to those of you looking for a clipboard managing app that has a ton of potential. WALRUSCP I bought this when it was on special here at MacUpdate, and it has since paid for itself and many times over. Setting it up to watch our front door while away on vacation, it caught our hired pet sitter not staying even close to the allotted time contracted. We showed the company the timestamped photos (which we had emailed to us while we were away), and we ended up saving nearly $200 because of it. The only problem has been that sometimes setting up the option to email is a bit funky. For some reason it does not always work the first time, and it could be related to Gmail. Not sure though. I would also add that the image quality is not the greatest (as was pointed out in a Mac|Life review). Overall, a very nice product. (Version 1.5.4)

WALRUSCP This application looks like it would be terrific: lots of features, decent price, and a nice interface that has some customizability. Problem is, it keeps hanging on me. I think it's due to the fact my iTunes library and music files are hosted on an Air Disk I access via airport, because when I use it for a local music library it works fine. I have emailed the developer several times, and he has offered some minor suggestions to fix the problem with no success. If he can fix this issue in coming versions, this application gets another star. Until then, this is simply an unusable application for me and others who access their iTunes libraries wirelessly. WALRUSCP First off, let me say this is a nice application that makes creating flash banners, slide shows, etc. very easy and enjoyable. One comment I have to make is that the developers should consider making the link elements to url feature a part of both the pro and standard versions. It being missing in the standard version severely cripples its usefulness for the average user who does not need all of the other pro features. I hope the developers will seriously consider changing this feature for the standard version in future updates. (Version 1.0.3)
