VASILIS  I've been using skEdit as my primary editor for a few years now. It is by far the best HTML editor out there. The previous version was already pretty good, version 4 is amazing. I've been working professionally with the beta versions for a year. The developer worked very hard on it, was very responsive and just delivered the best editor out there. Stop looking for an editor, you found it.

VASILIS  Great app. There are some other apps that try to do this but none of them are so user friendly.

And the developer is very responsive. There was a problem with a beta version and he fixed the bug right away.

His blog is the perfect place to ask for features: all requests made by users in the article about the previous beta are actually in this release. The next day!

VASILIS  It does the same thing as paparazzi. The only two differences are that Red Snapper is integrated into Safari and that it is not free.

TASTYAPPS  Have you checked out our PDF feature? The PDFs we generate are quite small, the text is selectable, and they're quite scalable (especially handy if the captured information needs to be printed!)

VASILIS  Almost perfect. The only thing it needs is (an option for) a horizontal and a vertical pixel line in the Display Window

VASILIS  It's pretty nice. A few things.

- Why a circle? My screen isn't circular.

- It would be handy if the crosshairs were as high and wide as the magnifier itself and if they could stay in place when you release the mouse (optional). Good for pixelperfect designers.

- I'd like the ability to resize the zoom window (yes, a window).

Finder Window Manager
Dec 8 2006
*****

VASILIS  This app rocks! Making sets of finder windows is just what I need. I move and copy things all the time.

The basics are very simple but there are some very nerdy looking preferences. This only means that it does way more than I want. and I think that's OK. Once I figure out what else it does I might be even happier.

There is one thin that is missing: you can hide all apps when you restore a set, but what's needed is that you bring the sets to the front.

VASILIS  The developer is very responsive.

On his site there is a new version (2.2.7) which only plays sound when new mail has arrived. And you can set the volume of sound.

VASILIS  I was looking for an app like this since MailTicker stopped functioning on my new mailserver.

There are some things that can be made better though.

First of all, the app should only make a sound when new mail arrives, not every time it checks for new mail! A beep every minute, or even every five minutes for no good reason is very annoying. It's so annoying I can't use this app right now.

This should be removed in the next version. Please?

And I have a few suggestions:

- I would love MyPopBarrier to have a menu-item which shows me how many new mails are waiting on the server.

- wouldn't it be possible to delete a message when you press backspace? Or maybe Command+Backspace. That feels more natural than changing the state of a message and then pressing a button, don't you think?

- Maybe growl-support for when a new message arrives?

But the thing that's most important is that you only hear the alert when a new message arrives.

VASILIS  Finally a program that does exactly what is needed and nothing more.

There's only one usability aspect: Dragging is not so easy for people with notebooks.

As soon as you start the app the cursor should start picking. When you click it should remeber that colour.

User Agent prefpane for Camino
Jul 6 2006

VASILIS  Camitools has more presets but it doesn't have the ability to add your own user agents (anymore?).

I'm not sure if these two prefpanes conflict with each other but I think UserAgent should be a part of Camitools.

WEVAH  You should be able to run both at the same time with no issues.

As for the CamiTools issue: I wrote this prefpane partly for the bug/QA people on #camino, who wanted a more uncluttered way to change the UA, and a way to use non-preset ones, as well.

I think you can edit a plist in the CamiTools bundle to add more user agent strings, but I'm not sure.

VASILIS  I think it's too simple, this widget. Some interaction is needed. It would be usefull if I was able to fill in a date and see who's saint of that day.

But above all: why is it so huge? A widget that only shows a day and a name should be tiny. This is the biggest widget I have seen so far.

Freeway Pro

VASILIS  They should replace the Pro with Amateur. If you look at the code of their own site you'll see why. Table layout, no separation of markup, style and behaviour whatsoever. If build sites with this app you rip off your customers.

For less than half the price of this app you have a great text editor, a good book about structured markup, a good book about css and a good book about JavaScript. That's a good investment.

VASILIS  Absolutely the best editor. I tried them all but none of them comes close to skEdit. Fast and simple, but you can customize everything to your personal needs. No fancy features that get in the way if you don't need them.

I've been beta-testing for a while now and the developer is very active, releasing a new version every few weeks.

****.

VASILIS  This is a nice idea but it needs a lot of work.

for instance, it doesn't look 'mac' at all. And it doesn't behave mac.

Things that need to be done before I start using it:

- Drag and drop support: I can't drop a folder on the icon in the doc to see its contents. And I can't drop a folder on a window, I have to browse which is too much work.

- Menu's, I want menu's. If I want to browse to a folder I want that option to be under File>Open. Not somewhere in the window.

- To view a file fullscreen I want to dubble-click. One click means selecting something.

- Support for more filetypes. Tiff and PSD are a minimum, I could think of more that need to be added.

Once these things work I'll use it.

VASILIS  20 dollars for a program which requires a lot of work to get it running? The only reason I would consider buying this (for a much lower price, 6 dollars max.) would be if it gives me the ability to delete mail directly from the server. This feature is not mentioned in the documentation.
