Yummy FTP
Oct 29 2009
*****

VRH  I was looking for a highly flexible FTP client that would allow me to access all the features from the keyboard. For example I wanted to be able to switch between single pane and two pane views on the fly from the keyboard. I want to be able to navigate the client entirely from the keyboard.

I've used Interarchy for years and it's still a great client, but it seems to have gone a bit off track since it changed hands, and it doesn't have all the interface features I'd prefer. I also tried out Transmit, but that didn't fit the bill for several reasons.

Yummy FTP is exactly what I was looking for and I got to pick it up on sale for $15 from the yummysoftware web site (coupon code is "ONLY15YUM")! The developer is friendly and quick to respond to questions.

VRH  This integrates all my newsfeed gathering and social networking into one very friendly interface. This is precisely the solution for which I've been searching! I've been running the pre-release version of EventBox which has been very stable for me and the developers are very responsive. This is a great deal.

Things I'd like to see in the future: further flexibility in keyboard commands (already a pretty good job here), some adjustment in 'focus' behaviour, and a way to adjust tolerance for overloaded Twitter servers. ;-) Speaking of Twitter, the 'Smart Folder' feature for Twitter is a wonderful idea -- a big help!

Again, in my opinion this app is solid and a great value.

MEMPHISBIRD  Yes, having all the services integrated is extremely convenient, and the smart folders feature has become a necessity. I also own Tweetie, but I don't use it because I can't filter my tweets like I can in EventBox. The two things I would really like to see are: 1) add an option to the smart folders to show which items are unread. Right now, there is a default smart folder for unread items, but it includes everything. I would like to have an unread option for each service; 2) option to have items that have been read disappear from view, archived or something, so that they don't show up anymore.

VRH  I had previously given this application an overall four star rating because of things I thought were missing or needed changing. I have found that all those issues have already been addressed so I'm increasing my rating to five stars. This application does exactly what I need it to do, and does it beautifully!

VRH  I just found this at the developer's site:

"If you have iTunes version 4 or later, Synergy will first query iTunes for album cover art before attempting to connect to the Internet."

So, my one major gripe was remedied long ago and I didn't even realise it! :-)

Nisus Writer Pro
Jul 2 2009
*****

VRH  Nisus Writer Pro manages to pack an enormous number of powerful features into a clean, fast, and well organised interface that never feels obtrusive or unwieldy. And it's that last bit that makes so much difference in day to day use.

While I appreciate the role filled by the Mac version of Microsoft Word, and it has really improved in substantial ways over the years, yet it has never managed to work the way I expect a Mac application to work. In part this is understandably due to a set of conventions that are specific to the MS Word world and that users expect to have carried forward over time. But it's more than that, too. Word has a tendency to let its power and complexity get in the way of what I'm trying to do. Or in the case of some of the users I support, Word lets them render their documents bewilderingly unusable. In my experience this is due in large part either to the intrusion of overly complex features into the users work, or to the overly complex implementation of those features. This is precisely what NWP has avoided!

NWP behaves exactly as I expect a Mac application to behave. It stays out of my way while I'm using it, yet it keeps a wealth of powerful tools quickly at my disposal.

VRH  Wow -- it's so nice to have this application working again! It was dead in the water for *so* long (some kind of AppleScript bug??) that I gave up on it and settled for "TotalTunes Control" as an alternative. But nothing in the field compares to this app for its intended purpose. The settings interface is clear and uncluttered and I love the visual feedback options.

One gripe I have is that it doesn't use the album artwork already in iTunes, but instead it requires an Internet connection for downloading its own set of album artwork. This is just a waste of resources in almost every way. At least I hope the developer will give an option to use existing artwork. That would seem a lot more efficient.

A feature I'd like to see added is Growl integration. While I really like the developer's own version of notification eye candy, it would be nice to have the option to use Growl.

NORAA  You actually can use Growl notifications with Synergy! You have to set it up within the Growl Preference Pane and not the Synergy Pane. Simply enable Synergy (if it is already enabled, un-enable it and then re-enable it) within Growl and setup how you want it to work (where to display on screen, style, etc.) Also, within the Synergy Pref Pane disable "Display floater when iTunes track changes" under the General Tab. If you don't do that, then both the Growl notifications and Synergy's own notifications will display.

VRH  Outstanding utility! Of course, it has to be used with the same caution that any web application requires. I use this to create standalone apps for streaming Pandora and to manage my Listingly.com lists.

VRH  I use Splunk with Safari all the time and it works fine. They just don't support it "officially," but it works. There are a couple display related annoyances under Safari, but nothing intolerable. Those annoyances are not present when using Firefox.

VRH  I have used this application ever since WeatherPop stopped working for me, and as one other reviewer said, this is actually better in terms of features. What a great application! And now with this update, one of my favourite features is working again! Big kudos to the developer for his excellent work!

VRH  As a 0.1 release there is naturally much by way of improvement for which we can look forward, but this is a really nice start. It's great not to have to jump through the X11 and xterm hoops to make the connection.

VRH  Wow -- this is beautifully done! What a great find!

The only thing that I'm still trying to figure out is how to remove a location from the list of Favourites. Otherwise, this little app is easy to use, full of features, and simply beautiful. I was struggling with a different weather utility not working correctly so I am very grateful that I stumbled upon this one.

A big thank you to the developer!
