TOMECK I was a fan and supporter of Letter Opener (formerly known as OMIC) as well and I have to agree with John: the upgrade policy is questionable. I remember that I bought OMIC for € 5 (probably I was one of the first ever paid for OMIC) in August 2006 and paid an upgrade fee of € 9.99 End of April 2009 after our offices has upgraded to Leopard. To pay the same upgrade fee for the Snow Leopard version... I am not sure that I am willing to do so as more as there is no discount if you would like to upgrade several licences. Why does the discount for buying more licences does not apply to upgrades? I am not saying that an upgrade fee is illegitimate but the fee should be reasonable with a fair "grace period" even more if people support an developer across diffrent versions. (Version 3.0.1)

TOMECK Yes, I noticed that too. It is very sad and even more disappointing because there was no advance warning at all (at least I haven't noticed one). PTHPasteboard was one of my favourite apps. However, I can't understand how the developer treats his customers anymore - to cut off the website and to vanish into thin air... what should I say... (Version 4.4.1)

Don't worry - there are more than you both who still prefer to use MsgFiler. I have emailed Adam some suggestions some month ago as well. TOMECK I agree that PTHPasteboard is a fantastic clipboard/pasteboard enhancement but that there are still ways to improve it. However, it might be interesting for you that you can edit the clipboard entries of a custom pasteboard at least. Maybe it would be a solution to implement the same feature into the main pasteboard. Espionage | Jun 1 2009 |
TOMECK Espionage does what it promises to do in a very efficient and unobtrusive way; as Jo said, it works flawlessly and is out of your way if you don't need it. It works swiftly and the notifications through Growl keeps you updated what happens. The possibility to associate applications to folders is very helpful and minimises the effort for the user using encrypted data. As Jo I had a small issue too and mailed the developers using their support website. I can confirm Jo's experience: I got a very polite, prompt and, more important, a efficent and elaborate reply. Greg, one of the Tao Effect guys, has send me a script which fixed my problem immediately. Btw, it wasn't Espionage which caused the problem; a maintenance tool had changed some permissions, and Greg figured that out from the log file I had sent with my first email; he fixed the problem by return. TOMECK I am in the same boat too and I agree with Roy that the grace period is quite short. I don't complain about upgrade fees because I am willing to pay for major upgrades. However, it is annoying that they are haven't offered a (smaller) upgrade with actually working FTP/FTPS - this has never worked for me properly and they haven't fixed the problem after my report. What I mean is FTP/FTPS was already implemented and it can't be that I have to pay for "many enhancements to FTP/FTPS" and that it "is no longer in beta" now. (Version 2.0)

TOMECK Never mind - Have you tried to mousing over the clip and wait for a couple of seconds? This should bring up the yellow pop-out window with that clip's full text in the main pasteboard as well. Also you may like to try to adjust the numbers of clips displayed in the main pasteboard because that leaves more space for the clips and it is easier to identify the right one. In addition check out the "Show as Compact Text" and "Always Show as Plaintext" options by adjusting the "Plaintext Font" (-> Pasteboards -> Advanced...). (Version 4.4)

TOMECK You are welcome - I am glad if my response was of some help. Be assured, the drag & drop feature exists and it works for me smoothly. Drag & drop between two secondary pasteboards moves the clip, and drag & drop from the main pasteboard to a secondary pasteboard makes a copy. I would like to show you this with a small movie but MU doesn't allows any uploads and PMs... Just for the record: I am not affiliated with the developer at all... ;-) (Version 4.4)

TOMECK I am glad to hear that you got a response from the developer and that some of the issues are sorted out. Regarding your drag & drop issue: I can't reproduce a crash at my end (using OS X.5.6 and PTH Pasteboard 4.4). Perhaps it is something specific to your system? I cross my fingers that it will be fixed for you soon. In the meantime it might be a work around to use the "Copy to main" function to send clips from a secondary pasteboard to the main pasteborad at least (that means pasting from a secondary pasteboard will copy the clip to the main pasteboard). However, I am with you that a function to send items from one to another pasteboard without opening the window of the target pasteboard would be a nice improvement; maybe the same possibility like in the main pasteboard to send items through the context menu. (Version 4.4)

PTHPasteboard Pro | Mar 23 2009 |
TOMECK Again, I am not sure what you are talking about; maybe I misunderstand your complains: 1) It is possible to DELETE clips from a secondary pasteboard and even more to EDIT them (inside the pasteboard itself). Open the window of the secondary pasteboard and hit the pencil icon. You will get a split window which allows you to add (+ button) and delete (- button) clips and in the second part of the clipboard window you may edit text clips. You may also rearrange the clip order by drag and drop the clips. 2) That is partly true. I haven't found a way to send clips from a secondary pasteboard to a third pasteboard in one step. However, you always may send clips back to the main pasteboard and from there to the third, fourth, fifth... pasteboard.

PTHPasteboard Pro | Mar 7 2009 |
TOMECK It seems you have overseen some of the (incredible many) functions oft PTHPasteboard because it IS possible to delete single items from the clipboard: Open the clipboard, choose a item, click the right mouse button, choose "Delete item" from the context menu. There are other ways to get the same result (in particular useful for people who are preferring to work with the keyboard) like using the Main menu or the Small Main menu. However, it might be an idea to allow to delete a single item just by hitting the backspace/delete key. To your other point: It might be useful that you get a warning if you are going to delete the clipboard history but if you hoover the mouse over the rubber it clearly says that it will delete the (whole) clipboard history. Bookends | Jul 27 2008 |
TOMECK Jan, I do not have to justify my post because it is obvious that my post was related to Bookends v. 10.2 and Sente 5.4.1. The latter has introduced "Links view" and other features which were not available in Bookends at this time. Simply check the version histories of both apps and put the facts together before accusing someone. I never have vilified Jon's great app; I only encourage competition. You have even missed the fact that I posted in the Sente forum for the first time one month after I had made my comment here on MU. Actually, the simply reason is that I own and use both apps, and I bought Bookends first. But I have settled with Sente for the moment because the UI makes it in my view easier to use than Bookends. I got use of it. Of course, this depends of the users preferences. I agree that Jon's support is great but in my experience the Sente team does not need to balk a comparison. In the last months the development of both apps has speeded up; and this is good for the user as LEV has pointed out in his Sente review on MU. Take another example: As far as I can see, Papers introduced the ability what Bookends implemented now with 10.3.1 (July 25, 2008) and called "Web page reference metadata detectors" first (last improvement in Papers v. 1.8 of April 16, 2008); Sente implemented this with v.5.6 (June 16, 2008)--of course, there are differences in details and that makes it an interesting competition. TOMECK Great idea! Great start! Great plug-in! Would like to donate to support the development! - support of MailTags (windows interfere at the moment) - support of SpamSieve (and other spam filters) to sort out spam/junk messages (index seems to include them at the moment; at least if you don't use the build-in spam filter) - option to exclude emails in the trash (and maybe from other specific folders) - maybe support of letterbox/wide mail However, it is a really helpful plug-in already! MACVET Hi Thomas, it would be good if you could give some more details for your claim. Since you act as a heavy user in the Sente forum your Macupdate post here seems to be a cheap ad for Sente and nothing more. I have compared Sente and Bookends a while ago and apart from the somewhat nicer appearance of Sente I couldn't find any features where Bookends needs to "catch up". In fact I don't think that any other bibliography manager for Mac OS X is as feature rich and as versatile as Bookends (at the time writing). And this goes along with a brilliant support.

Papers | Mar 6 2008 |
TOMECK The approach of Papers is very interesting and the implementation of different online sources seems to be smoothly. The scope, however, is science focused and I could not see a easy way to integrate social science online sources, in particular law journal etc. online sources. I have noticed the "plug-in" option but I haven't either the ability nor the time to do so. It would be interesting to learn if Papers will be developed for social science in the near/middle future. If so, I would buy the software immediately only to support this project. (Version 1.7)

TOMECK MsgFiler is a handy complement to Mail Act-On. I have a lot of folders (because I have to sort my emails for history reasons) and it isn’t convenient to set for all of them a rule or Mail Act-On rule. I use Mail Act-On for my most important and daily used folders, but I love to use MsgFiler for infrequently used folders or for folders with many sub-folders. The search engine works great and really fast. You can use multiple search terms, part of words or navigate trough a list of strikes via the up and down arrow keys. Simple and good. In addition, MsgFiler allows you easy to find and open any of your folders (Apple+O), if you need to have a look of your old emails. Ultimately, Adam (the developer) is very responsive if you have any queries and interested in suggestions. MsgFiler as a full integrated Mail plug-in is for me one of my “must have”… (Version 2.0.1)

Perfect! - OMiC do what it says! The first version of OMiC was already very useful for me. Version 1.02 is however perfect for my purposes. OMiC simplifies the communication with users of outlook exquisitely. It is no longer necessary to do detours (e.g. TNEF's Enough), if you like to open the content of a winmail.dat. You can now see the schedules, appointments, files or V-Cards directly in the pull-down menue for attachments. OMiC simplified really the everyday life in a office. A really good investment! Between the version 1.0 and 1.02, Chris, the developer, and I had via a couple of e-mails an interchange of ideas. He always quickly reacted and was always very cooperatively. Do not hesitate to contact Chris, if you have any trouble with OMiC or any idea to advance OMiC! (Version 1.02)
