THOMAS STROMBERG Wow, thanks for the heads up on the crashing. Right now there is not a logfile being written to, but you can see all of the logs by opening up Applications -> Utilities -> Console. If it is still causing you problems, can you open a bug at http://code.google.com/p/namebench/issues/list with the log messages? I will take care of it ASAP. Thanks! (Version 0.9.3)

TIAGO I own licenses to both DVDpedia and Bookpedia but have never been able to really use the softwares, because the Info Views are so bad. Delicious Library on the other hand is beautiful to look at (it has a truly designed interface) but it doesn't offer all the functionality of the 'pedias. Oh... How I wish the "Info View" in all these 'pedia apps was not ugly as hell... And yes I tested them all, including every single extra listed in the site... There's not a single one that looks even slightly "designed"... they're just "put together". How hard is it to hire some real and talented designers to create amazing and professional looking templates to make the apps "look" as good as I know they "are"? What good is it to rely on user contributed templates if (apparently) only amateur and/or bad designers seem to give it a try? This is just a comment... I will not post it as a review (with stars) because I really believe these apps ARE good and I really hope they LOOK good in a near future... But still, the lack of proportion, alignment and visual hierarchy to the information, in all these view templates is incredibly low quality... I know taste is a matter of personal opinion, but I truly don't believe ANY good designer can take a look at those templates and not be disgusted. (Version 4.4.3)

BRUJI Thanks for your feedback. Of course we're sad to hear that you deem the info view templates lacking but fortunately the info view is based on HTML which means it is fully customizable. You can edit any of the existing templates to fit your style or you can write your own from scratch. Take a look at the DVDpedia Help file under 'Working with DVDpedia > Customizing info view templates' for more information about that. More importantly we'd love it if you were to share your amazing templates with the rest of the Pedia community. Just send them to us and we'll put them up on the Extras page for download and we could even update our current included templates. If your are not HTML savvy a design would also be appreciated as it would allow us to see what you have in mind. We're always working on improving the Pedias, including the templates, and we love getting input from our users. (Version 4.4.3)

XENOPHILE Heh, I have the opposite opinion of DVDpedia. I love the info view, it's minimalist design is easy to read and devoid of distractions. What initially drew me to DVDpedia was it's GUI and design. Delicious Library? Ugly. WTF is up with the fake wood? And the interface is an abomination, requiring the user to mouse to and fro across the entire app window for tasks that are routinely grouped together. The info window is cramped into a tall, narrow space. What I'd like to know most is, WTF came up with the simulated wood interface, and do they cover their house, car, etc with fake wood panels to be stylish? (Version 4.5.1)

TIAGO I would love to say that it "just works", but the truth is that when it works it offers no advantages to Safari's built-in downloader... I honestly cannot remember if Leech was EVER able to successfully resume a paused download... Most (all?) of the time I have to browse to Leech's history and download again an in several times that doesn't work either, so I have to go to the webpages again (which were already closed, obviously) to get the files... If your connection drops mid-download, be ready to loose everything you had already downloaded... I love Leech's interface (LOVE IT!), but owning both Leech and SpeedDownload I have to say that SpeedDownload is way faster, it successfully pauses/resumes downloads, it successfully re-downloads, has a better history browse... etc... But I hate its interface and could never get used to it... I'll try the lite version, but I already know that its interface is no match for Leech's... Let's see... (Version 1.1.4)

TIAGO Excellent... and VERY needed... Once you start using QuickLook, it's very annoying when you're presented with a file that will not show a preview but an overly enlarged ugly icon insted... This seems to solve this issue for CHM files... Agreed, it's not a CHM reader, but that's not what it intends to be, I guess... Most CHM documents are hundreds of pages long and I don't think it's practical to read them via QuickLook, even if it's possible one day... DOUG S. Are you sure it's not an issue with our hosting provider? Specific bits of functionality are disabled by certain hosting providers, mainly the cheap budget ones. For instance, a client I worked with I couldn't use ForkLift to restart a failed connection. However, with my hosting (Servage) restarting failed connections work every time. Same with merging and renaming folders. The only times I've had issues are with bad hosts. You might want to check with the provider (or +ers if it's multiple) to see if they have any issues. Also, it might matter if it's an SFTP or an FTP transfer. (Version 1.5.3)

TIAGO I should have mentioned this before, but I already wrote to the developers, describing the issue in great detail... Thanks for taking the time to write to us.

Anyone can design an interface with nothing in it. Putting substance into a product is a whole different ball-game. There's a minimum to how 'lite' something can be while at the same time being useful. TIAGO The irony in this whole story is that users who pirate the software will certainly find a way to do so again and again and again (as they always do). I agree that Aroona Software has the right to protect its product, in order to assure future development of VideoDrive, but there's a fine line here that must never be crossed... Customer experience should never be sacrified. As DRAW said, Mac users can't stand MS-like behavior. That's why OS X does not annoy the user with registration or activation issues, unlike Windows... I guess if this is a one time thing, it's ok... But this is it... If this happens another time, I think the company should rethink its registration strategy. (Version 1.5.10)

Together | Dec 17 2007 |
TIAGO Over the last few days I've been thoroughly testing every file/info management app available. In the end, my choice was between Together and EagleFiler. Both are excellent apps but I find Together to offer a better balance of features and user experience. The interface is the best among these apps and the developer—Steve Harris—is very responsive and accessible. The price ($39) is the same (or almost) of the other apps I was considering (Yojimbo and EagleFiler), so this wasn't an issue. I'm sure several users might find $39 to be "too much" for such an app, but let me say: try it and you'll see that it's not expensive at all. Very recommended! (Version 2.0.3)

Xtorrent | Nov 11 2007 |
TIAGO I SO wanted to like this client... Azureus is java and totally PC-like... Very powerful and stable, but it's way too ugly for me to run it without tears in my eyes... Transmission is a promise... A promise that never materializes... Everything was going well: first selective file downloading (previously available ONLY in Azureus... immediately copied by Xtorrent)... Recently, the project incorporated encryption, the feature I was waiting for... However, from this moment on, Transmission is totally unusable... You wouldn't believe the amount of data lost in each recheck (when restarting, for example). I must have lost about 50-60Gb of data. I don't know if this has something to do with encryption or not, but if it does, I guess it explains why Dave Watanabe has not YET launched a version of Xtorrent with encryption... Brilliant engineering, right? And then there is Xtorrent. Very pretty interface... Unfortunatelly, that's about it... By the number of mixed opinions about his supporting skills (some say he stinks, some say he is fast and gentle), I must conclude Dave is bipolar or has some multiple personality disorder... I confess that I don'r own a copy of Xtorrent, but as a owner of all his other softwares I must say that his support stinks (my opinion)... In the few times I needed some kind of assistance, due to activation issues, he was very very slow to answer my emails... Also, during the beta testing phase of Xtorrent (prior to the official launch), I took the time to email him with opinions and suggestions regarding the sofware. Although he was not particularly rude in his answers, he had a kind of superior and condescending way of dismissing my suggestions... To me that kind of attitude is totally unprofessional and should not be tolerated in a software developer... But this is the small stuff... Xtorrent simply CANNOT (and WILL NOT) be taken seriously until the serious private trackers accept it as a valid client. As it stands now, there is not one single TOP tracker that accepts this client in the swarm... Using it will only serve to one purpose: get you banned... I guess in the end it all comes down to a simple choice: do you wanna use a beautiful client that is only able to connect to the lame public trackers that WE ALL know of, or do you wanna use an ugly client that is accepted by every one of the awesome trackers that SOME OF US know of? What do you care for the most? This may be the situation where that famous quote about journeys and destinations is proven wrong: with torrents, the destination is FAR more important than the journey... Until some viable alternative emerge I'll continueto cry while using Azureus 2.5.0.4, the "Shrek" of torrent clients... You should too...

I tested both with new torrents and with torrents started with 0.90 and my valid data after rechecking was generally 50-60% of the real downloaded amount... TIAGO I'm a big fan of Transmission... In time, I believe it will be THE client for the Mac... Anyway, more often that I would like to admit, it loses data... Several gigabytes of data, actually... If I keep the client running, torrents finish and everything goes fine... However, if I pause the torrents and close the client for a system reboot, for example, when I open it again I notice a significant reduction in the download %. For example, consider the following torrents: 1. 560Mb (1 file): 92.92% before pausing - 68.02% after reboot... 2. 5.37Gb (over 100 files): 56.60% before pausing - 48.79% after reboot... 3. 3.74Gb (75 files): 27.58% before pausing - 16.60% after reboot... I'm running the 0.90 version with Mac OS X 10.5 with every update installed... Transmission was also set to IGNORE UNENCRYPTED PEERS... (Version 0.90)

TIAGO Although this is a nice and prety client , I agree with most of the comments on Mr. Watanabe... I own licenses to Newsfire, Acquisition, and even paid for Inquisitor (which is free nowadays). Every time I had to contact Watanabe, it's been a nightmare... For example, after a clean install I could not activate Acquisition for over a month, 'cause he didn't respond to my emails... As for the features, this is a prety basic torrent client... Too basic for my needs... And since it's banned from every single private tracker that matters, there's no point in using it... As for stability issues, I can't comment, since I gave up on testing it a few months ago... Bottom line, if you care about your downloads and uploads, and want to access the kind of goods that only private trackers offer, go grab Azureus...
