StuffIt Expander 2010
Sep 16 2009
****.

THREEDEE912  I have to say, although past versions have been bloated with ads for Deluxe or whatever, Stuffit has gotten better.

When extracting a file a simple progress bar appears, uses Growl, and opens virtually any archive thrown at it (especially those old binhex and sit files).

I use The Unarchiver myself, but I do admit Stuffit has done a decent job of improving their basic expander program.

JON555  I've uploaded a passworded .rar file to EasyShare. The password is "jamesbond" (no spaces, no caps). It's a passworded .rar file of The Unarchiver app. I ran a check on the .rar after I made it to verify it worked, and everything checked out. I tried opening it by double-clicking which brought up The Unarchiver asking for a password. After putting in the password, it simply froze and crashed. Here is the link to the file:

Feb 27 2009

THREEDEE912  You do know this hasn't been updated in over a year?

Because Xtorrent is based on the free and open source Transmission BitTorrent client, it generally cannot be updated because the Transmission developers changed the license agreement to prevent other people from profiting off of their work. Such as what Xtorrent was doing.

From the Transmission team: "Portions of the code will be changed to avoid blatant attempts to profit significantly from our work"

But David Watanabe keeps selling this ancient version in the hopes that some ignorant person will come along and give money to him anyway.

THREEDEE912  The latest version of VLC is out. Here's my take on it:

Features: Features a ton of video viewing options, can open almost any format out there.

Ease of Use: Relatively easy to use, just open up any video/audio file. However, the UI seems a bit messy.

Value: It's free!

Stability: Generally plays most videos well, however sometimes spontaneously crashes, or skips and displays garbage instead of video.

Overall: A great free media player which can playback almost any format, but not always very reliable.

Silverlight installed without any problem. It's function is similar to flash, displaying interactive content online. I'd say its about the same speed as Flash too, maybe only slightly faster at certain things. However, not many sites use Silverlight so it's hard to tell.

Because Privoxy and Tor are trying to anonymize your surfing, they obviously have to connect to the internet in order it to work! Any program you use gets routed through Privoxy/Tor, which then get routed through a bunch of different servers around the world to make it very difficult to determine for someone to determine where a connection came from. This is all the 'phoning home' you see (although it's not phoning home at all).

THREEDEE912  Yes, this is the version that doesn't require X11. I found the Release Candidates to be pretty stable, so 3.0 should be fine. For some reason the final 3.0 release doesn't have a PPC version.

As compared to NeoOffice, both are very similar (mainly because NO is based off of OOo). Both have the native printing window and Open/Save, and use the system fonts. I actually find NeoOffice slower at certain things, but that may be because I'm using an old PPC G4.

I'll be fair with my star ratings. It's easy to use, and enables Flash content on the web to be displayed. It's free, so can't really complain about that. But it's so slow sometimes it's unbearable to use.

THREEDEE912  Slightly confusing for newbies to use. You have to start dragging the file and while dragging, press F12. This brings up Dashboard while you are still dragging. Then just drag the file over the widget.

Overall, it works fine. A bunch of UI problems sometimes happen, like huge tooltips, and the widget doesn't always change it's size when changing the settings.

THREEDEE912  Although I don't have multiple monitors, this little app does come in handy sometimes.

For people that do have more than 1 monitor, arranged -vertically-, is it possible to set this up so that the cursor moves from, say, the top monitor to the bottom, and vise-versa?

The user would probably have to configure something to tell what monitor is on top of the other, though.

THREEDEE912  People! Please learn exactly what this program does before you bash it!

The program will not seed to other users who are only downloading (unless they just started to download) and are not uploading or have a very low upload rate, being greedy (leeching). This is how BitTorrent is supposed to work, but some people always have to set the upload to 0 and download to max, so this is what BitTyrant is trying to fix.

It's perfectly fair. Everyone shares with everyone.

THREEDEE912  This is a RealBasic app. When you show Package Contents, there is a 'rbframework' item, as well as other RB files. I'm NOT saying that RB apps are bad (unlike what some other people say).

This one seems to actually be pretty good. But, in the web interface, there seems to be alot of problems. I keep getting a bunch of CSS and javascript text inside the frames instead of whatever is supposed to be in there. I don't think I'm the problem, as i've tested this with Camino, Firefox, Safari, and even iCab!

Accessing it from my windows box also causes the same problem, and installing it on my other mac also has the same problem.
