Espresso
Mar 23 2009
***..

THEODORE LEE  I'm really surprised to see this out of beta. The app just feels unfinished to me. I had very high hopes for Espresso (still do, actually), but this 1.0 release feels more like a 0.90. MacRabbit gets some fundamentals right, like the Code Folding and the Intellisense auto-complete, which seem much better than Coda's. But the way the app handles "tabs", which aren't really tabs, but items in a list in the "workspace", and "previews" seems unfinished, UI wise.

I'm hoping they work the kinks out quickly and provide some good competition in this space. But I'm afraid that the high rate of the Euro to the dollar means that I'll be sticking with Coda for a good long while.

THEODORE LEE  The developers website has been down for at least a couple of days and the download is inaccessible. Is this app dead?

Apple Logic Express

*****

THEODORE LEE  Best DAW in the price range, and seriously spanks ProToolsLE, which is much more. Apple took what was already a great release (7.2) and made it better by refining the UI, adding in GuitarAmpPro, UltraBeat, and several other additions from Logic Pro. If you record music on your Mac, get Logic Express/Logic Studio.

THEODORE LEE  This app has improved significantly since it's inception. It is now a viable option to Twitterriffic. Actually, in my short testing time, it's proving to be a little better than Twitterriffic in that TR tends to get 404 errors from Twitter constantly. So far, TP has been running w/out any errors. Keep up the great work. Glad to see a valid competitor to Twitterriffic!

THEODORE LEE  I'm a little confused. What do I get in Mamp Pro that isn't already in the free XAMPP or MAMP?

THEODORE LEE  For bugs to get fixed, you have to report them. I reported the sort bug last night, so we'll see how long it takes for a resolution.

THEODORE LEE  4.8 is a great update. I had not upgrade to 4.0, but have now decided to do so. If you could benefit from a "kitchen sink" approach to the Finder, spend the money. It's well worth it.

THEODORE LEE  You're right - that sort issue looks like a bug. You should report it to CocoaTech. I'm sure they'll tackle it in no time at all.

MarsEdit

THEODORE LEE  I've used all the major tools for publishing to my WP blog - ecto, Flock, and of course, the WP web based interface - and none of them compare in style, ease of use and simplicity to MarsEdit. MarsEdit is super simple to use, easy to configure, and powerful enough to handle just about every blogging task you can think of. The added imports from Flickr in v. 2 are extremely welcome.

Finally, Daniel Jalkut, the dev, is super responsive. I had an issue months back with a new build, and he was able to diagnose the problem inside of an hour. Try getting that level of care/involvement from the big guys. Support high quality indie grown software and try MarsEdit if you do any blogging and use a Mac.

THEODORE LEE  I had been using the 0.6 release, but removed due to some issues. In my short time with 0.7, it seems most of these issues have been resolved. 0.7 looks to be pretty close to feature parity with TortoiseSVN. The installation process has been simplified and streamlined, and overall the app seems to work quite well. I'm using on Leopard, fwiw.

THEODORE LEE  Absolutely the best code editor for Mac OS X - hands down. The fact that it's written by one 21 year old developer just blows my mind. Behold the power of Cocoa!

I've been beta testing 3.6 since last summer. The featureset is amazing. The app is super customizable and should be comfortable for anyone coding HTML, PHP, ASP, Coldfusion or Perl.

A lifetime license for $20? It's a steal. If you code, you NEED this app.
