TASKMAN Certain archives are created using a proprietary variant of the AppleDouble encoding, which is currently not supported. Until we work on a fix, you should expand those files using Apple's Compression Utility. (Version 1.7.1)

TASKMAN I will only repeat this once: this software doesn't respect the BitTorrent protocol and causes unnecessary stress on trackers. Use it on private sites, and you will get banned. (Version 1.0v45)

TASKMAN XTorrent is now officially cheating, announcing itself as Azureus 2.5.0.4 in order to force connections to trackers which banned it because of its behaviour. Bad, bad idea. (Version 1.0v44)

Google Desktop | Apr 10 2007 |
TASKMAN If you verify the receipts for GoogleDesktop.pkg and GoogleModLoader.pkg, which is what the guys at Ars Technica should have done in first place rather than just trusting John Gruber, you will notice that no files are actually installed in the main System folder. The mdimport binary is not part of Google Desktop, but of Apple's operating system. On my machine it is dated Jan 2006, way before Google Desktop came out. Also, its manual page can be found on ADC. The tool itself is actually much faster than Spotlight, completing a test search in about 3 seconds while Apple's tool took about 20. I also have no processes sucking all my resources, or any of the problems which the other people on MacUpdated reported. Good job boys. :) (Version 1.0.0.155)

TRONDAH Perhaps you could mention the names of these alternative networks/clients so I can start using them instead? Haven't been able to find anything that will let me download songs so quick and easy. (Version 4.13.3)

LimeWire | May 2 2007 |
TRONDAH I've tried Frostwire, and actually I seem to get fewer results there. Anyways, that's the exact same application and client. What are the other 'better' networks and clients available? (Version 4.13.3)

LimeWire | Aug 4 2007 |
CHMORLEY I am partial to Poisoned. It has been stable, and can access Gnutella, FastTrack, and other networks. Of course, I have mostly given up these networks and have largely switched to BitTorrent (and Xtorrent), so my opinion is less current than it used to be. (Version 4.14.1)

TASKMAN If people define StuffIt Deluxe "bloated", then I don't know which comment could be made for Azureus: I'm only keeping this thing on my hard disk because certain trackers I'm using actually require it. Written in Java, so it doesn't have a real Mac OS interface, it tends to be slower and sucks a lot of resources on the host machine. To be honest, the latest betas improved a bit, but still use a ridiculous amount of CPU and memory compared to other clients. Plus I'm missing the necessity of creating 80 threads. (Version 2.5)

TASKMAN Either this application's junk filters are not working properly, or the Gnutella network recently become filled with bad files. TextMate | Jan 9 2007 |
TASKMAN Files without extension open in TextMate when double-clicked in Finder. However, the current implementation has undesirable side-effects. For example, all of your shell scripts are identified as "Document" instead of "Unix Executable File" and their icon becomes the default blank page thing. Unix Executables won't open with a double click anymore, and you will have to manually modify the Info.plist file and rebuild the LaunchServices database with every new release of TextMate you install. Just not worth the effort. http://comox.textdrive.com/pipermail/textmate/2006-June/011293.html (Version 1.5.4)

LRKIRSCH I have a couple frequently-used files that were also affected by this. As a quick and hopefully more permanent workaround (though I would love to see TextMate not try to open files without an extension in the first place... unless there is some preference that I'm not noticing), I did Get Info on the files and then set it so they would open with Terminal. Doing so will also obviously give the files the appropriate icon once again. However, if you usually deal with a larger amount of files that are supposed to open with Terminal instead of TextMate, then yeah, it's not so easy. Due to some error regarding not enough information, you can't successfully use 'Change All' in the Get Info window. Other than this problem, TextMate is pretty darn cool, and I'm glad I got it as part of the MacHeist bundle. (Version 1.5.5)

TASKMAN First and foremost: the Console is probably the most exciting new feature of 7zX. It enables the experienced user to fully unleash the power of the compression core. In the mean time, we are working on a new GUI which will enable anyone to access the new stuff. In order to activate the console: drag&drop the file or folder you want to compress on 7zX's icon. Wait for the main application window to appear, then push and hold down the "C" key on your keyboard. Within a few seconds, a standard Panel should appear on your screen. The following switches can go one after the other, separated by a single space. -mx=[0 | 1 | 3 | 5 | 7 | 9 ] Sets level of compression. x=0 means Copy mode (no compression). Default is 5. Example: -mx=9 enables Ultra compression. Specifies the type of archive. It can be: 7z, zip, gzip, bzip2 or tar. 7z format is default. Example: -tzip creates a Zip archive. Creates segments and specifies their size. Example: -v600m will create 600 MB segments. (Version 1.5)

TASKMAN I perfectly know it can hurt. However, since 7zX is mostly a GUI for a collection of Command Line tools, I thought some users would have been happy if they had a chance to call all the features these instruments provide. 7zX 1.6 is coming sooner than you would think, and will introduce a noob-proof GUI. That's all I can do, I'm sorry. (Version 1.5)

TASKMAN 1) Who needs integrated search? BitTorrent is centered around trackers, and the coolest stuff isn’t clearly available on most public ones. 2) Like Acquisition, it doesn’t work well with TorrentBits or BNBT-based trackers. Be careful: there is more than just a couple of them out there. 3) Much of the interface has been borrowed from Acquisition, so if I had to shell out any extra money for it, I would feel like I had been ripped off. Moreover, who needs a shareware BitTorrent client when I can get dozens for free? Right now, I’m sticking with Azureus or BitTorrent/Mainline. 4) The developer moderates the posts on his blog, so you won't see any negative or neutral comments for that reason alone. FANTASTINE1234 I don't appreciate it being blamed for being the "reason" why Apple now protects their artwork. However, I am the reason for making getting high quality artwork from the iTMS easy and simple and not an arduous task requiring constant attention. I have no obligation to fixing or cracking Apple's new scheme for protecting their artwork. I make the application for free and spend a lot of my free time working on improving the app to make the users music experience even richer. I do my work for the users who are helpful and share ideas for making it a better application. Criticizing and blaming me is not going to make the app any better. I am working on alternate artwork sources and doing my best to make the app better. So either be helpful or don't post derogatory reviews of my free software. (Version 0.3.5)

Corripio Artwork Finder | May 31 2006 |
TASKMAN Don't think nobody ever thought about grabbing covers from the iTunes Music Store. You simply didn't realize that certain things in order to keep working have to remain hidden. You can't just release a software that steals art from the iTunes Music Store, advertise it on MacUpdate, VersionTracker and only God knows on which other sites, and expect Apple to leave it working. The problem is, other people (including me) made softwares that would get covers from the iTMS, probably long before the idea even struck your mind, and now, thanks to your efforts, they are condemned too. TASKMAN The truth is: I have been working on this software for two months now, and I spent more money for it than I gained from donations.
