Type: CommentsDate: 28 Feb 2008 11:13In Dictionary.app preferences, "WORDS" does NOT appear in the list, there; only "New Oxford American Dictionary" and "Oxford American Writers Thesaurus".
This. even though "WORDS" has already been installed in my /Library/Dictionaries folder.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 28 Feb 2008 07:14Have no idea how to access Words Latin Dictionary once it's installed.
It installs in /Library/Dictionaries along with OS 10.4's New Oxford American Dictionary.dict and Oxford American Writers Thesaurus.dict but can find no way to utilize it.
Developer has no apparent contact info.

Type: ReviewDate: 22 Dec 2007 13:19This pathetic attempt at a simple diary really has nothing much going for it. It just doesn't reflect any real creative thinking from the developer.
One can use any number of also free notepads available instead of this. Hmmm....why did the developer even bother with coming up with this silly little piece of nothing?
If you want a simple, free diary with just the right amount of useful features, and unlike Tagebuch, demonstrates real talent and creativity, try the beautifully done viJournal Lite; it just blows this little embarrassment right out of the water.

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Dec 2007 13:04While it's got a plethora of little features, no doubt useful for some, I, for one have no real use for a lot of them and, I'd venture to say, most people wouldn't either.
I do care about my email and Gyazmail, at $18, works beautifully for me.
At $59, Powermail is, I think, dreadfully overpriced. But, who knows, you might feel differently...I'm sure that it's worthwhile for some, but not all that many, I'd guess.

Type: CommentsDate: 9 Dec 2007 14:10I found Oxidizer totally unusable. There are no instructions. Attempting to get this thing going caused the app to freeze again and again. Had to Force Quit it each time.
Why the developer chooses to put Oxidizer out here before it's ready to even preview is a mystery.
A complete bummer.

Type: ReviewDate: 20 Jul 2007 04:57A fair amount of the time, it's nearly impossible to determine where a target is; often, I found myself shooting pretty blindly.
Sometimes, I just couldn't zero in on a target regardless of how hard I tried.
Fine tuning one's shots is extremely difficult.
Trying to shoot down an airplane is just an excercise in futility.
Still, it's a moderately fun way to piss away a half hour or an hour, but I did find it fairly exasperating and discouraging.
Graphically, it's pretty nice.
At $9 US, it's quite reasonably priced.

Type: CommentsDate: 9 Jun 2007 14:16While Dominoes 4.0 is rather nicely put together, it's obvious to me after giving it a good "test drive" that the game is programmed to give the computer a big advantage over the one who plays against it, even in easy mode.
When I would place the initial domino at the start of a game, the computer virtually always had a matching tile, whereas quite a few of times when the computer placed the first one, I didn't have a matching tile and had to draw another one or more.
Then, at a number of times during the games, I was unable to place a matching tile and had to keep drawing additional ones, sometimes about eight or so one after the other 'till I was able to come up with a matching one; then the computer(opponent) would too often play out its tiles, leaving me with tiles containing a high number of pips, giving it, the "opponent", 40-70 points. Only extremely rarely did this happen to the computer.
Over all, the computer seemed to come up with matching tiles far more often than I.
For these reasons, I decided not to purchase it, although I'm also ambivalent about whether or not it's worth $20.
At any rate, I'd like to see a mode of play available, in Dominoes 4.0, in which the computer's dominoes are chosen in totally random fashion, to reflect playing in the real world.

Type: CommentsDate: 3 Jun 2007 11:44Since this is a freebie and it appears to be the developer's first offering, I'll be kind and won't give it a rating.....yeah, it's not good.
While the game is very simply designed, and there's not much to it, I found it nearly impossible to keep the "lander" under control, even at it's easiest setting. I kept crashing and crashing the lander time after time(I just can't believe the original moon lander was THIS difficult).
It was a progressively more frustrating and unsatisfying experience. So I just gave it the finger and went on my not-so-merry way.
Sadly, I guess I'm just not cut out to be an astronaut.

Type: CommentsDate: 25 Apr 2007 15:21While virus/spyware risk is currently negligable for Macs, it IS just a matter of time before we Mac users are suddenly blindsided by one or more malevolent "intruders".
I think that it's folly to be smug and compacent in the face of that eventuality.
As a wise adage goes, "Buy an umbrella while the sun is still shining."
The $12.95 promo price
IS inexpensive insurance.

Type: ReviewDate: 31 Mar 2007 06:44Now we're getting somewhere...this version is solid and stable. Fast action arcade style, one's fingers must dance all over the arrow keys to control the play. Takes a bit of practice to become facile with it, but this game is kinda fun!
$10 seems about right for this.

Type: ReviewDate: 31 Mar 2007 06:22Unsophisticated in design and limited in playability, this might appeal to children, or adults without imagination.
It's not all that interesting....it begs for a wider range of play; it seems rather crippled in its two dimensionality. It lacks any semblance of the "sizzle" that gives a well constructed game the ability to make the player want to come back for more.
This game reflects a rather hampered ability on the part of the developer....as if it were a school assignment in "Game Development 101".
I think the developer needs to push his limits a lot further, spend more time developing his skills.

Type: CommentsDate: 28 Mar 2007 08:06Not wanting to give the developer an undeserved black eye, I'm updating my previous comment, below.
I've been in contact with him and found that my problem with Virtual Dashboard seems to be one relating to a unique conflict between a menu bar app that I have and Virtual Dashboard; he's gotten no other reports of problems nor can he duplicate my particular problem.
The chances of you experiencing the same issue are quite slim, so do give Virtual Dashboard a fair trial.

Type: ReviewDate: 28 Mar 2007 07:55I don't mind paying a few shekels for an esthetically appealing, interesting screensaver....something that Pyramids of Egypt certainly is.

Had to forcequit using the power button.
After I restarted, had the same problem.
Only by deleting EVERY last Virtual Dashboard file(especially p.lists) did my Mac return to its previous state of calm repose.
I'm not willing to give this app another go....I don't need the aggravation.

Type: ReviewDate: 25 Mar 2007 15:43While the sound/graphics are nice, the game features are lacking.
There's no undo function to take back a wrong tile placement, no pause function, no difficulty level to choose from.
While your score and ranking vis-a-vis other players worldwide is maintained on Tetris Zone's website, it doesn't seem to update your stats to reflect your actual standing.
I managed a highscore of 97,000 once but my stats state that my highest score is 32,000.
The all time high score is stated as being just under 875,000 by a player from Japan, with other players managing high scores of in the upper hundred thousands, but somehow I just don't think such scores are really possible.
While skill and fast thinking play a big part in doing well in this game, chance does play a fairly big role in that it depends on the right tile falling at just the right time.
Sometimes, it seems that the pieces fall at too great a speed to allow for accurate placement, but there's no way to slow it down.
I purchased this game and do rather like it, but I feel that it could better by providing it with the features mentioned above.

Type: CommentsDate: 25 Mar 2007 00:28CipherWorks is no longer available; SubRosaSoft has removed it from their website.
It was, (although I still have a copy of it) pretty good at what it does, although at $90 it was quite overpriced.
If you need file/folder encryption, just search under "encryption", here at MacUpdate; there are some good ones available, and at far, far less than the price CipherWorks was going for.

Type: CommentsDate: 24 Mar 2007 18:44It's all right for what it is, something basic and simple, but I just don't know why one would specifically choose Plain Text Editor over any number of other simple text editors out there.
There's a shareware fee of $20 for this which is ridiculous.
I would definitely choose the simple yet elegant, and FREE, "Smultron" over Plain Text Editor.

Type: ReviewDate: 22 Mar 2007 12:31While Firefox is feature rich, it's not all that fast; adding extensions(of which a plethora of useful and unique ones are available to choose from....which IS a plus) slows it down even more( which IS a big minus!). That's the main reason I don't use it as my default browser, which is too bad since a fast Firefox would be outstanding.
Opera, for example, IS fast as well as feature rich but is, in my experience, quite user unfriendly and mystifying to use. It's got a strange way of doing things, unlike most other browsers.
Firefox could be brilliant in the world of browsers, but still needs work.

Type: ReviewDate: 11 Mar 2007 16:42The previous 2 reviews reflect my feelings to a "T". The game's WAY to difficult for all but the "hotshots" out there, and maybe for them too.
There are 12 or so different"opponents" to choose from, although many are blocked in the trial mode, but there seems to be no differences in their "play".
You get the "message" before playing very long that you haven't got a chance.
I played 'till the time limited trial ran out, and felt that I had just been the victim of a vicious assault and battery.
As it stands, now, there's no way in hell that I'd buy this game, let alone play it any more.
It does show promise, though, if the developer takes these reviews to heart and makes the necessary modifications.

Type: CommentsDate: 8 Dec 2006 17:22Diskwarrior is a very good utility; does that mean that it's, then, worth whatever the developers want to charge for it?
Well, that's for the folks who might want to purchase it to determine.
Clearly, some think that its worth the current price and some don't. If you don't think its worth what's being charged for it, then don't buy it.
I purchased Diskwarrior some years ago and went for the last upgrade. But I'm not going for this upgrade because I do think that $50 is too steep. It, apparently, has got a few more bells and whistles, and is faster than previous versions.
But the previous version is fast enough for me, and it does what I originally purchased it for. So, I'm sticking with that version.
Oh, and $9 shipping and handling fees to put an upgrade CD in an envelope and send it via US mail? Gimme a break!!!
Maybe, if it were sent by a personal courier service, but NOT via US postal service. Jeez!! I am NOT a sucker.

Type: ReviewDate: 5 Dec 2006 16:21The idea behind this might have originally been good, but in practical use this app leaves much to be desired.
Usable and secure proxies are not always available, and of those are, many or all are often painfully slow.
The process for finding good proxies is, itself, most often quite time consuming.
And if you choose to use the developer's proxy, often the only usable and efficient proxy, you need to be aware, as a previous reviewer stated, that he knows where, on the internet, you've been;this might be an issue to some. To use his proxy, you have to first log in.
Then, of course, there's the matter of support, or, more to the point, the lack of it.
I, and many other Netshade users have emailed him regarding one issue or another but have, most often, gotten no replies from him.
And why hasn't the developer responded, here on MacUpdate, to this criticism from many regarding his lack of responses to inquiries? He hasn't even appologized, let alone given an explanation.
Think twice, or even three times, before purchasing Netshade.
I, for one, am actively searching for a better alternative.

Type: ReviewDate: 24 Nov 2006 11:06The graphics and music are pleasant but that's all this turkey's got going for it. I played it for a bit but got bored really quickly. There's just not much(if any) sizzle...I could find nothing, at all, to hold my interest for more than a few minutes.
At $19.95, it's rediculously overpriced.
There are plenty of games available that offer a lot more for that price, and many that offer more and at a much lower price.
This dud's not worth more than $5, or better yet, it should be offered free of charge.

Type: CommentsDate: 23 Nov 2006 15:09I recently became aware that the one very important feature that AfterSurf lacks is secure delete, something that all decent internet track removers have.
Overwriting information at least seven times before deleting is considered secure enough so that deleted info can't be recovered. AfterSurf doesn't do that so that info it deletes CAN, in fact, be recovered.
The developer really needs to get busy and add secure delete to AfterSurf. That would make this app truly outstanding in all respects.

Type: CommentsDate: 5 Oct 2006 16:51Installed it, but Particle Screensaver doesn't show up on my list of Screensavers in System Preferences.
This thing seems totally "dead in the water".
There's a particle screensaver.qtz file in library/screensavers, but doubleclicking on it brings up the message, "Error Opening Movie......the movie could not be opened". There's no "read me" file and virtually no info about it on developer's website.

Type: ReviewDate: 18 Sep 2006 10:12Well, I gave it a try and, I must say, found this game only sightly interesting; I lost interest in it quite rapidly. Sorry, but Zen Puzzle garden just doesn't grab me. There's just not enough "sizzle" , or interesting content therein to keep me going with it for very long.
My feeling upon not getting the little monk to rake the entire garden?......so what, I'd rather spend my time playing something more engrossing. And graphically, it's rather dull.
I think that at $19.95, it's overpriced; maybe $8 is all it's worth.
But ya never know, it might be your cup of tea. Try it out and if you feel it's worth your time and your $19.95, then, by Jove, go for it. Different strokes, and all that. I guess there's no accounting for people's tastes, though.

Here's some info about Oversized.zip:
At 05:02 AM 10/5/2005, TAC Forums wrote:

------------
Search google.
No actual viruses use this technique, but fall under the rather vague category of "malicious files."
These aren't real viruses, just a specially created small zip file that will expand to a very large or infinite size, with the intent to fill the hard drive of anyone who tries to unzip the file. The files
by themselves don't cause any harm, but filling a hard drive can cause a Denial of Service until someone deletes the offending file. These aren't new; they appeared shortly after zip files first
appeared. It then didn't take long before someone noticed that you could crash AV scanners by feeding them one of these. Now, all
antivirus scanners detect these and will either alert the user or just not scan them.
ClamAV is configurable, and can either detect or ignore, whichever
the sysadmin prefers.

Type: ReviewDate: 30 Aug 2006 12:47While LanderBrowse may be small and fast, it's so severely crippled by it's lack of features that it's really a pain to use.
One can't set ones own home page....the preset homepage is Apple.com; upon launching LanderBrowser one is, currently, immediately greeted by those two Apple dorks going, "Hello, I'm a Mac.......and I'm a PC....", which is extremely annoying.
There's no bookmark feature....a MUST for any browser, nor are there most of the amenities that make any browser user friendly. There aren't even any browser preferences to choose from.
I'm just wondering why the developer chose to make his creation available so early in the developmental stage.
The developer still has a long way to go before this browser can even be considered ready for prime time.

Type: ReviewDate: 29 Aug 2006 10:45Pacifist is outstanding.....it's saved my sanity at least half a dozen times since I purchased it about a year and a half ago.
Just recently, I found that one crucial font was missing from my OS causing an important utility(Terminal) to malfunction. I used Pacifist to extract that one font from my installation disk and then install it.....a piece of cake, really, bringing back full function to Terminal app.

does essentially the same thing and is free. While it doesn't have the bar graphs that WheresTheFreeSpace does which show which folders are the largest, you can easily determine that just by looking at the top of the lists, which are ordered from largest to smallest folders/files.
OmniDiskSweeper http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7402 is another alternative, although it costs $15 but is nearly identical to WhatSize.
Anyway, $30 for WheresTheFreeSpace is way too high. Check out the alternatives mentioned above,

Looks interesting, but there's no instruction manual. The Jungulator website states that a downloadable manual will "shortly" be available.
Hmmm. Then why didn't the developer wait 'till the manual is ready before making Jungulator 4.3.1 available?
While the full app is available without any limitations, the website states that Jungulator is shareware, and asks that the user "consider" a

OK, sounds fair, although, whether this app is worth that amount remains to be seen. I'm waiting for the instruction manual to be made available, so that I can try this puppy out.
