SURFSPIRIT  Picasa IS A Killer App! It's Free!!! And even open my Raw Files that iPhoto and Apple Aperture CAN NOT! It's quite easy to use even if it can get better in that category, but it's amazingly powerfull for the price, FREE, not even iPhoto gets on it, if Picasa gets more integrated with the Mac OS X, Address Book integration and interface polish, it will certainly start to fight with some so called pro apps...

Microsoft Office 2008

SURFSPIRIT  BAD BAD BAD BAD, I mean, when Microsoft Office 2008 came out was one of the most buggy apps I ever experienced, then after several updates it became ok, now, I had to uninstall and install all over again to make this update, but guess what, excel works power point also, but word crashes on launch. Since thereīs Neo Office that there's no point to buy Microsoft Office anymore! And Apple has Keynote that's lot lot lot lot better than PowerPoint. If you want to keep using this mess, and have important works to be done, be careful and do NOT update to 12.1.7 until urgent works are done! Microsoft should pay for work hours damage it makes!!!!

DAVID PELTON  SurfSpirit, could you please give some more details to your issue?

I have seen two reports of crashes after install, and I would like to track it down.

Are you using the Trial version that is downloadable? Would you be willing to send me a file or work offline (outside this forum) to track down the issue, and then we can report back to everyone what we found?

Thanks

SURFSPIRIT  What this app can achieve is really amazing, in theses of multi multi social networks an app that connects them all is something blessed. Ok, it uses Adobe Air and has memory problems because of that, but is fast and is free and very well developed so far. Can't wait to see future versions, I also found out an amazing site because of this app, is Ping.FM, a must have subscription!!

SURFSPIRIT  OK, let's face it, the idea of using our cpu cycles to help find cures to diseases or get better understanding of science and nature, searching for better world etc etc, is very altruistic and kind. But yes, the interface is as bad as it can be, but what worries me most in these recent Boinc days is security, I mean, why the hell can't I have control of the program, now it has special permissions that I canīt move it to another partition or make a ram disk of it, Boinc is having too much control of the app in our own computer! There excuse is to protect us from bad project to not run malware programs and so on, but I would like to decide what to do with apps in my own machine! Keep that in mind! And about bad projects and so on, it's always a case of trust, who guarantees that Seti is really seti...?

SURFSPIRIT  Actually lots of good apps do the same and even better, and even for free, the best in my opinion is AppCleaner, free and fast, and you donīt even have to open it, because it can work quite well with the garbage, when your send an app to the trash it will appear an window asking if you want to delete similiar named files in preferences and so on. It's better to get your developer efforts in other kind of stuff or offer some unseen feature!

ROBOTANK  Actually, I prefer something that doesn't work by dragging to the trash. The only other app deleter I've seen (except CleanApp) that has a real edge on Amnesia is AppDelete--it has the ability to scan for invisible files (i.e. the caches that some apps bury inside the /usr directory). However, AppDelete costs money, even if it is only 5 bucks, and since I own the Koingo Utility Bundle, Amnesia costs me nothing additionally. Really, it's a matter of personal preference with these utilities. The only one I recommend against is AppZapper.

SURFSPIRIT  BAD! OK, it was lot faster than ClamXav to scan files, but din't found any of the two virus ClamXav had made alert, I also run Kaspersky via Parallels to the same usb pen, and Kaspersky confirmed the two virus. All the antivirus used their most recente database. ClamXav seems better, you can even easy scan any file or folder by mouse click menus. I also run Sophos aclamed anti virus and the result was the same as iAntiVirus, a shame! Above of all this, I am completely sure my pen was infected because it was used to try to desinfect a friends pc that was full of virus and malware. So if you want an anti Virus for mac so you minimize your friends pcs nightmares, choose ClamXav!

SURFSPIRIT  Of all the great and positive reviews from macupdate users, I believe this is a good application, but it's buggy on my system, I am running a MacBook Core Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.6 and it fails to copy large files above 300MB to my network iMac DV and to pen drives, it was the first thing I uninstall after the problems started and problem solved. So it has some kind of bug in this file system extension. Don't what this messes with, I think I will wait for another releases before trying it again.

SURFSPIRIT  ĩTorrent has a great start in mac world, I like the interface, but it needs work and some features, well, I tried with a torrent that were in my Transmission taking ages do download, I actually don't know why but, did a force check on the file so I could try it on ĩTorrent, and for my surprise it found lot more peers and way faster. But has some bad things, the force file check was lot more cpu/disk power consuming than Transmission and it did crash once. But it really is a great start for a beta! When a "stable" version come out, I will definitely think on it to replace Transmission.

KKNOPP  You mean faster on your computer. I certainly didn't get that outcome on mine. On mine both of them were equally as fast. But then again I am not on a crappy college network.

Being that both let me max out my bandwidth, I would then have to go with the one that is less buggy and crashes less. That wouldn't be uTorrent.

If any application is a PITA when crashing it's a bit torrent client.

One big advantage from Adobe Acrobat Pro is that the original image is always shown, when you do a text selection it pastes the OCR copy, so even if the OCR has some mistakes you can see whatīs the mistake when looking to the screen original image.

About OS integration, it really is a must! I don't use Windows to chat on MSN, I used it because I need to.

Some apps just don't exist in Mac OS X, like ArcView or Swish etc, and since there's no apps remotely similar or as good in Mac OS X, then I use windows, so it's really is a time saver to actually can browse trough windows desktop folder or documents folders etc and see the exactly same content as in the Mac OS X Desktop folder, and Documents folder etc!

SURFSPIRIT  I tried VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop and VirtualBox. I went from Parallels to Fusion because Fusion was faster, but well I must say, not so well Mac OS Integrated as Parallels.

Then I changed again to VirtualBox, which is free and very fast and robust, but well It really misses the Mac OS X integration!

Then Parallels released Version 4, I was reluctant to try it again, so much work for nothing, but I donwload the Parallels Version 4 tryout and it really beats all the competition.

Itīs very very fast! The Mac OS X integration is absolutely the best I have seen and CPU cycles and the overall CPU need is the lowest of all the virtual machines I ever tested. It's great that now the virtual windows don't waste cpu cycles when not using it, I don't even have to pause the virtual machine.

And with Parallels 4 your desktop folder, documents folder, is the same as the one in Mac OS making it really easy to use! It uses all the CPU cores that you want, and it really has graphic 3d acceleration.! Virtual Machines finally got mature, and the first one to get into this stage is Parallels Desktop 4!

WHYTOI  I actually don't want excessive integration with my Windows virtual machine. As a minimum, I would hate to see virus and other Windows malwares affect my Mac files. I am happy to share one folder where files are transferred b/n the two OSs, but definitely not let Windows directly access my full folder hierarchy. It puzzles me why anyone would want to bypass one of the big benefit of running Mac OS X.

JIMW  I am a long time user of Parallels My experience with conversion from Parallels 3 to Parallels 4 was horrific. After spending a good deal of time in dealing with their confusing upgrade options and spending hours trying to get help with it I found out that that I really did not need to purchase the default opt-in 12 month download option that added $7 to each of my licenses - and neither do most users if they have a CD-Burner, which all machines that can run the product come with, except for the MacBook Air. I also made the unfortunate mistake of directly purchasing the product instead of using the trial license as historically the product had a good history of stability and support for me. I say mistake, because the first thing it did after the upgrade of a working image and authorized legal license of XP is require me to reauthorize my Windows license. Then my cursor went dead and would not function at all in the virtual environment. Additionally It was impossible to contact support by phone regarding this issue. After being put on hold after being told I would have a 10 minute wait, 30 minutes went by and then I was told by the automated system that support was too busy to take my call the system disconnected my call. I then was able to finally contact customer service who acknowledged my demand for a refund but seemed to care less that they might be permanently losing me as a customer. Promised followup calls from a supervisor never happened. After some difficulty I managed to resurrect my working copy of Parallels 3 and it is now working the same as before. I have tossed my Parallels 4 upgrade in the trash and am now considering its alternatives. Needless to say I am considering VMware Fusion.

I would be very interested in feedback as to support experiences from VMware Fusion users. One thing a learned a long time ago is the only thing worse that not having a needed tool is having one that is broken and not being able to get it fixed. Good support is a critical issue for me. Based on my most recent experience with Parallels, they are no longer offering it.
