STEVEN JAY COHEN  Well written, responsive developer, does the job.

Yes, update to 1.0.2. The change was because some people found that 1.0.1 only launched some of the time on a restart.

Until Apple addresses the problem, this is the most elegant solution.

I just tested both.

the free one does just record syste audio; but no app recording (e.g. iTunes)

This Audio Recorder here can "hijack" other applications to record audio from it.

it is quite simple but not very nice looking.

features are OK.

Localhostr Widget
Jul 10 2008

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Interesting, but I am put off by the 50mb limit. I am a voice actor and often move around files larger than that.

I wanted to tell this to the developer but could find no contact link on either localhostr's page or the home page of the developer. That made me even less likely to use this widget.

I think the widget is beautiful and this is a great use of the dashboard, but without a valid/simple method of contacting the developer, I can't put something this important to my home business in the hands of this product.

RealPlayer
Jun 8 2008

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Let's stay away from the uninformative whining of the recent posts. here's some real data for you if you are considering updating:

Version 10: works with widgets that play realaudio streams even if you switch back out of Dashboard

Version 11: stops realaudio streams when you switch back to the desktop

Even if it is not officially labeled a beta, version 11 is still not feature complete until this is fixed.

Hopefully, readers will find this a useful comment, since it actually talks about the software instead of whining or simply being a "me too".

ARVIDTP  no. Ardour actually uses jack as its audio engine - not just as another core audio interface. Ardour wil not work without jack. On linux Jack is more than just a way to send audio around - it also is an audio engine and a way to send timecode around to sync applications simialr to rewire. Its just that there are not many mac apps that support jack natively. PD is one I can think of that can.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  I forgot to rate it :)

Aside from Ease of Use (which I gave a 3), the rest of Privoxy is definitely a 5. Heck, if it were possible, the other entries should all be 6!

Privoxy developers seem to be of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it school."

It works GREAT in 10.4.10 on my Intel iMac, they don't NEED a newer version. If a new version is needed in 10.5.x, I trust that a newer one will be available.

Great product!

VMware Fusion
Sep 26 2007

STEVEN JAY COHEN  I agree, this is getting a bit harsh. Here is my feedback. Fusion says that it handles multiple cores, so I am going to assume that's true, but the Windows applications that I tend to need aren't heavy enough to show the difference. After all, I run the Mac version of apps like Photoshop.

What made me choose to go with Parallels over this very solid piece of software from VMWare, was how the Finder and Explorer integrate with Parallels. If you look at the Fusion screenshot, you will see the menu used for launching applications. That is totally functional (and probably a lot safer) than allowing Explorer.exe to run, but Parallels answer is just more aesthetically pleasing.

It was easy to test both since they can import eachothers virtual disks, I was able to use the same windows install for both products.

While I was at it, I tried out CrossOver. And, it's wonderful if your software can run under win2000 or earlier. If that's true for you, you should check it out.

And, finally, I also tried VirtualBox.org. It opensource freeware and damned solid! It's also worth checking out. It doesn't do the integration though, so it feels a lot like running VPC7 or earlier, with full screen or window-in-window.

I hope soneone finds those comments helpful.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Yes, your icon can be considered funny. After about 5 minutes, it's shortcoming start to show itself.

1. You have no Azureus code in your application.

2. Being named BTPD Front, with the DAEMON abbreviated, the meaning of the daemon in the icon is lost.

I made a quick icon out of some OSS images that I hope you will take the time to consider:

http://sagefire.org/files/btpd-front-icons.zip

You will see that there is a CLI interface with something in FRONT of it. And, the thing in front of it is a downloading widget. Granted, it isn't perfect, but it actually describes your application better than b***-f***ing someone else's icon.

Airfoil Source Selector
Feb 22 2007

NESFIELD  I wrote this app quite a while ago (May '06)and didn't publish it to any listings sites: it was just a small thing I was playing with.

At the time, Airfoil didn't have the same features and then the current source had to be disconnected and then the new one selected.

I discussed the features that this app has with Rogue Amoeba and they were in the process of adding the silent disconnect/connect which then allows the desired app to be hijacked with less clicks and without the wait for the disconnection. Still it helps me, and I prefer to use the buttons and not navigate the Airfoil list.

I would like it if Airfoil actually added these audio source buttons to its interface, but for the moment this is my only option.

I'm not current with the views of users on Rogue Amoeba's forums.

Here are two more for you to consider:

1) The only missing feature that I see is the ability to pick individual files inside a torrent to download. Once you have done that, you can do everything that I can ever imagine needing.

2) Have you considered sending that streaming status output to a widget? I put "btcli stat -in -w 5" into WidgetTerm ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18859 ) and find that "cleaner" than starting a new Terminal session like you are doing right now.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Yes, but will it edit Extras2.rsrc?!?!

Without that, you cannot build themes for the Intel macs.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  I love the program!

I use it to redirect BBC audio streams.

The only way to make it better would be if I could control it from a widget instead of having the app open.

Airfoil seems like it would be a natural addition to the dashboard.

RadioTuner

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Markus has done a wonderful job improving RadioTuner. It is now the only radio widget that I have installed. If a stream is available for both iTunes and Real, I now choose Real so the player can be confined to my dashboard. RadioTuner works wonderfully with Airfoil and my Airport Express, allowing me to listen to music anywhere in my home.

I like the v1.0 skin better than the older one, though it looks a bit pixelated on my screen.

All in all, a great widget!

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Well done!

But, it has a huge memory leak. It is showing processor usage of 59% to 64%. Let me know when this is fixed because I like it much more than Apple's default accuweather widget.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  I agree. It is beautifully done. But, I can't upgrade from the old one unless it is going to list top processes again.

I can't tell you how many times I used that feature to diagnose memory leaks in applications.

So, I'm stuck on the old version of this widget until that feature shows up in the new one :(

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Please redownload IridiumTunes. It seems that because of a problem on my server, you may have gotten the last beta and not IridiumTunes v1.3.

So sorry for any problems, but there is a simple fix.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  I've tried before and I run up against Carbon apps that balk at the darker color theme. This is where ShapeShifter shines over stand-alone themes.

With ShapeShifter, its easy to mask things that I can't with my theme-ing method.

Hope that helps,

Steven

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Could you contact me via my website? I'd love to know more about the System hang. I invoked Disk Utility from the command line in the installer, so I know I didn't do anything too tricky.

But, if I could get more details from you about this, I know I could improve the install process.
