Timeline 3D
Sep 17 2009

STEVE R  I've been using the app extensively for the past week and give it high marks with certain caveats. Exporting to Quicktime takes a long long long time. I gave up several times using the timeline I'd created. Yesterday I created a smaller timeline with 42 entries and decided to let it run till it was finished. Started at 2:30pm and it finally finished at 9:30am this morning. The finished mov runs 2:37 mins. Intel iMac Dual Core, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM with nothing else running. MenuMeters never indicated that either processor was using more than 8% capacity. I believe a much quicker way to create a QT file will be to export jpgs to iMovie or use a screen capture application while running in 3D. Exporting to another app will also allow for re-ordering the slides which for some reason drop an occasional one mid-timeline only to stick it at the end.

When creating a timeline with multiple rows, I'd like to see dropdown menus similar to iCal which allow for which row the event is added/modified. Barring that feature, I'd like to see a way to have each row be a distinct separate color so there is no need to repeatedly scroll to the end of the timeline to see which row an event is being added to.

I'd like to also see a feature that will allow the entire timeline to be seen on one screen even if the font size is so small it can't be read. Having that visual can be helpful in understanding a timeline.

I believe this is a well-done app, and I also believe it has great potential to be even better. I will recommend it to others but I will stress that the export to QT feature -- as is -- should not be the one of the reasons anyone purchases the application.

I've emailed the developers on weekdays and have had rapid responses. I have no qualms about their customer service.

ADAM BEHRINGER  Thank you for the helpful review. I wanted to point out that the 9.2.2 and 9.2.3 updates addressed some of the concerns about export performance that you mentioned.

For detailed discussion of the recent performance improvements please see the post I just published on our blog (http://www.beedocs.com/blog/2009/10/export-performance-update.html).

Thanks again everyone. Cheers!

STEVE R  Like many others who have posted in the last 24 hours I realised how much I've come to depend on MenuMeters. Now I encourage everyone who has raved about the update to get on paypal and send a donation to show our thanks.

STEVE R  SABnzbdX opens and interfaces with SABnzbd+ so there is no need to have dock clutter or open the browser interface. Current version also works reliably in Snow Leopard.

STEVE R  I absolutely love this app. Recently I created a website for a mailing list's longtime anniversary and members sent in photos of themselves that I made into a poster to upload to the web. It was easy enough to change the size of the allotted squares to fit group pictures, ie customise the templates offered. Once the poster was created, I took screenshots that I then combined to make banners for the webpages. Everyone was impressed with the results. I purchased the app as part of a bundle, which is the main reason I purchased the bundle. I may not use the app on a daily basis but that doesn't take away from my enthusiasm.

MailForge
Jun 18 2009

STEVE R  I'm an old fart and I hang out on mailing lists with other old farts. Despite our ages, we try new things like other mail apps, and those of us who have been using Eudora since the early '90s still prefer to use Eudora. It suits our needs. Right now though, the only PPC app on my Intel Mac is Eudora 6.2.4. I've tried the 'new' Thunderbird-like Eudora and hate it. If MailForge comes anywhere near the classic Eudora handling of email, my credit card will be out to pay for it.

Growl

STEVE R  I tried Growl a few years ago (it seems) and wasn't too impressed with it, for what my needs were then. Now I've been using it for more than a year and I'm liking it. I upgraded to Safari 4 beta -- for about 10 minutes before trashing it, and have yet to upgrade to Safari 4 release. I like the app so much I recommend it to my friends.

Apple iPhoto
Jun 11 2009

STEVE R  I updated to the latest 8.0.3 today, midway through working on a slideshow project. Prior to updating I had successfully exported several versions of my project using the same non-DRM-protected mp3 file. After updating, my slideshow has no exported sound. None. I tried AAC, still no sound. Restarted the computer, no sound. Even tried the built in themes, no sound on the exported file. Deleted the ~.plist, restarted the computer, iPhoto opens like new (all libraries intact) but once again, no sound on the exported slideshow.

Frustrating. Tomorrow I pull out my disks and reinstall software, not letting iPhoto update to see if there is any joy in mudville.

uTorrent

*****

STEVE R  I recently upgraded to an intel imac in order to use this app, and I don't regret it. I also use SABnzbd to download via usenet, and found that Transmission and SAB did not play well together when sharing bandwidth. Transmission also did not like being in hidden mode and would frequently need to be Force Quit. Transmission also did not like being south of the equator so I needed Tomato if I wanted shrimp on the barbie. Azureus.... it does everything and expects you to give it everything. Now that I've been using uTorrent for several weeks, along with SAB and web browsing and emailing and streaming music online and using Front Row all at the same time, I'm convinced I've found the missing link of applications that let all my other apps play well together so I really can take advantage of this great "multi-tasking" talked about in 1984!

I've had no problems with download directories, autostarts, preferences, stability.

STEVE R  Can anyone tell me what the E2 error code is telling me? I suspect it is saying the app is not compatible with a certain tracker since it always happens with the same tracker that gave me problems with Tomato.

Happens in Tiger and in Leopard.

STEVE R  I give this 5 on everything but stability because it occasionally crashes when stopping the Daemon (both 10.4/10.5 and with the past three versions of SABnzbd+) However, that little quirk aside, this menu bar app is excellent for a quick peak to see how the downloads are going with SABnzbd+ because it is green when all are done, red when stopped (usually telling me I've run out of available hard drive space) and blue when things are running fine. Combined with Menu Meters to monitor bandwidth, and of course SABnzbd+ THE BEST APP EVER now with working RSS) I am regularly downloading at full bandwidth, something that has never happened with Unison, Drop NZB or Thoth. I'm at a loss to explain why the Mac community has not embraced these two apps. Maybe they like sitting at their computers verifying, repairing and joining segments? Me, I prefer doing something else with the hours I get back every week from having the SABnzbd+ do it all for me.

Well done to the developer.

Baywatch
Jul 30 2007

STEVE R  Stopped working. After I bought a new-to-me computer and reload the software the application started giving me error messages -- "Baywatch can't find an ebay auction in your front most window." Since I'd grown to depend on this **great little app**, I was a bit saddened that it somehow got broke.

In searching for an update, a previous comment led me down the right path. When I re-installed the OS, some location settings were changed so trying to add an eBay.COM auction wasn't working. Adding eBay.CA auctions is working.

Hint: sometimes having an ebay.com/yada/yada auction in the front window will work simply by changing to ebay.CA/yada/yada. I have no idea if this will work for ebay.fr, etc.

Cocktail
Jun 22 2007

STEVE R  I started up an older version of Cocktail this morning, was told there was a newer version so I downloaded it. Surprise, surprise.... the old version of Cocktail was moved (w/o asking permission) to the Trash. No biggie except the new version 3.8 uses a totally different registration than the older one which needed only a serial number. So without the original email address and name used to register the original several years ago, the new version is in trial mode. Had I emptied the trash or not had an older version archived, I'd be left without a registered copy.

No big deal when there are other freeware utilities out there, I guess, but still.... ya-reminder to always backup registration information.

Sonnet Firmware Updater
Jun 9 2007

STEVE R  On the B&W: Download the Updater.zip, unzip, doubleclick the installer.pkg and let it install the Firmware Installer and Firmware Remover.apps in Applications.

Shut down the computer.

Then pushing in the _Programmer's button_ below the Power On button on the front of the B&W (you will need something sharp to push it in), power on the B&W. Continue to hold the Programmer's button until the tone stops, approximately 5 seconds. Let the computer continue to power on as normal.

Open Applications, find the Sonnet Firmware Updater and doubleclick to open. Click OK and let it do its thing.

You should not receive a message saying that it is unable to access the ROM.

STEVE R  You can delete fields by highlighting/selecting the field/s and then using the - (minus) button. There is a bit of a quirk though when doing many deletes. When deleting lines x though y, the lines stay highlighted after deleting. IF you want to delete the data that is now re-ordered into the same highlighted area, you must deselect the lines (click elsewhere) and then re-select the lines or you'll get error messages.

I inadvertently scanned a DVD with mp3 files and once I realised the quirk to deleting, I was able to batch delete more than 400 lines/files very quickly.

STEVE R  The corrupted database was most likely because I had input customised genres in the genre field. Given that I use other movie databases for more complete information of mainstream movies, leaving the genre fields empty is not a big thing. What Moviestar does -- scanning the contents of a disc to input into a simple database of filename + location -- it does extremely well and it does it quickly. Now I can see quickly how many duplicate files I have, and save some of my bt bandwidth.

On my G3 a DVD is mounted, scanned and catalogued in under a minute. My database now has +1300 files and it opens in less than 12 seconds. My other databases (Movie Collector and DVD Cache, both java-based) take much much longer and have much much more information.

MovieStar is a perfect companion for any movie database that is dependent on iMDb or other sources because it keeps track of every file you have on a disc. And if you're not wanting to maintain a bloated database with poster, director, cast, plot, reviews, links, etc, etc, etc, this could easily be your only database.

I'd rate this app high on every scale. The developer has done good. Thanks.

STEVE R  Ouch! I was really excited about this app -- near perfection in its simplicity. Spent two hours this morning mounting burned DVDs on the desktop to catalogue more than 1000 files, went the extra step of ensuring the genre was correct on all of them, and quit the app. In cleaning up I found a few more discs to add to the collection, and now the app won't open.

I was really really really liking this app :-(
