STEVE HODGSON  A fantastic application - Spotlight on steroids!

I cannot praise this application enough. It's a great combination of features (quick look, PathFinder support), speed and usability. The developer is very responsive.

STEVE HODGSON  While I wasn't particularly bothered by the developers' post regarding FF3 updates I did get fed up that Firefox support looks like it is not a priority and also that OmniWeb did not sync particularly well IME.

Bookdog seems a much more powerful alternative.

STEVE HODGSON  I may be forced to eat my words.

As far as I can see this version is PowerPC and Tiger only so I won't try it on my MacIntel yet.

****.

STEVE HODGSON  I decided to take the new option for "hiding the Dock Icon by compromising its functionality"

Much happier to have this app behaving as I believe something in the menu bar should. Thanks to the developer for responding to the feedback - however reluctantly.

STEVE HODGSON  Like other reviewers here, I am wary of recommending this application because of the ping and curl requests it sends out. I have tried to contact the developer to ask why this is necessary on the basis that if I understood what was happening I would continue to use the app. I have never had a response so I use this app as little as possible, consider it to be seriously flawed and could not recommend it unless one had a pressing need for something of this type.

I reckon that there is an opportunity here for a nice little app to clear Mac-specific files from removable media before ejecting. I constantly use media that will be used on Windows or other FAT formatted devices and find it frustrating to see these ‘hidden’ files.

STEVE HODGSON  Try my fix then. I am running this on MenuCalendarClock 3.1 and it's working fine.

STEVE HODGSON  You don't need a third party app to fix this. Move the application to the desktop and open the package contents. Open info.plist in a good text editor and add the following new key.

LSUIElement

1

Move the application back and relaunch. It will now have no application menu or Dock icon.

1. You need to move the application to force the OS to recognise the change.

2. The new key is surrounded by HTML-like tags i.e. key and /key within characters. The '1' is surrounded by string and /string enclosed within similar brackets. Experience has taught me that these might be stripped off this post!

STEVE HODGSON  You should maybe try the betas of 2.2 that are available as this adds inline spell checking.

STEVE HODGSON  I thought I would make this a review rather than a comment to start to move the rating down. Something that must be due now that this fine application appears to be abandoned.

CTVD was without doubt the finest virtual desktop application for OS X. The fact that it broke with each major update to the OS could have been forgiven had they been able to support the application and update accordingly. Now that it seems to be beyond recovery it looks like the end of the line.

Codetek (Bill?) are still promising a new version it would appear but this looks increasingly like a fantasy.

STEVE HODGSON  I really thought that this was a great idea in theory but when I looked at the size of the PDF files produced found them significantly larger than those produced using the native OS X options to print to PDF.

I the end the convenience was outweighed by the increased file sizes.

STEVE HODGSON  I just wonder if am missing something here. I would have expected 1.5 to be a fairly significant revision i.e. "hundreds of major improvements". I was previously using build 898 but this latest jump from 1.1b to 1.5 only has two changes in the release notes.

How many of the changes planned for 1.2 and 1.3 (http://macromates.com/wiki/Suggestions/GUI) are in?

OWL  1.5 is something like build 902. 902 is WAY different from release 1.1, but not so different from 898, since you were clearly keeping up with the cutting-edge development versions.

STEVE HODGSON  I just downloaded the latest version of BookIt 3.6 today and used it to synchronise my master Camino (1.0b1) bookmarks to Safari (2.0.2). Unexpectedly I found that while the toolbar bookmarks were transferred over, the main main bookmarks were not.

I was able to restore from backup but when I tried using the migrate function I had a similar problem, only the toolbar bookmarks were transferred.

With this version I appear to be unable to synchronise my bookmarks between these two browsers. If you download this version proceed with care!

The developer has not always been particularly responsive to problems of this type.
