PithHelmet

STERNHAMMER  I find PithHelmet just about indispensable. Every time I have to do without it I''m horrified by the visual pollution I have to endure.

It's also effectively free but I it's well worth a donation.

Thank you Mike Solomon.

STERNHAMMER  I can't claim to have given this any kind of in-depth test, just a casual inspection. I'm not compelled to go further though because although it seems competently executed it seems quite limited when compared to the many other information management packages out there.

Having said that the template feature, allowing you to insert boilerplate text into each new entry, is a nice little feature.

I hope the developer keeps working on it and takes heed of the competition. It wouldn't hurt to clarify how this app fits in in a crowded marketplace.

Countdown

****.

STERNHAMMER  Contrary to DBRENNAN I think this little application is perfectly respectable and very effective (and I've tried all the titles mentioned). I like the control it affords for easily setting timers seconds, minutes or even years in advance.

It has some quirks and there are refinements needed:

- selecting "Show main window" from the menu bar menu doesn't bring the app to the front which makes it a little pointless.

- the time format can be changed but can't be reset to the "factory default". (In fact I can't seem to restore it at all, maybe after a reboot... or else I'll have to hunt down the prefs file and kill it.)

- it definitely needs an option to suppress the dock icon for long-term use and convenience.

- it would be ideal if the the dock and menu bar icons showed the current time, after all they are clock-like. I realise this wasn't intended as a clock replacement but it's unfortunate that it creates on-screen clocks that are wrong most of the time (i.e. whenever it's not 12:07).

STERNHAMMER  If you persevere with anything for 2 years you'll build a certain amount of respect for it! :)
