SPRINGHEELMAC Screensaver aspect is now much improved. If a particular project does not have a screensaver attached to it, instead of the usual, "Screensaver not supported with this project" you will get a breakdown of all the projects you are involved with and your stats. It fades in and out with each currently running project. (Version 6.10.17)

SPRINGHEELMAC I had the same problem and could not use the internet while sharing with any kind of speed. Forget about using Vonage. This being unacceptable, I thoroughly tested all versions and found 1.42 to allow sharing and decent browsing speeds at the same time. Its a little bit of a trade off though; something about the way 1.42 handles peers makes the timing of the sharing, um, a little random. Still, it allows me to "surf and share" so thats the version I currently use. And yes, I've tried ALL the versions available extensively before settling on that one. Also, prior to OS X 10.5.8 this wasn't always the case, so it may be a synergistic effect between the operation system version and Transmission. (Version 1.76)

SPRINGHEELMAC The ONLY thing I don't like about it is you can't download to the same place the torrent file it at. I believe this is why there is always a problem with "hit and runs", because people download a file and then move it somewhere else before they seed. If they added this one thing, it might help. Transmission has this option and when I use it I place the torrent file where the file is supposed to go (say a folder labeled after a TV show) and continue to seed, even while I'm watching the completed download. That way I can even seed the file again later down the road without moving it. Other than that though, good program. I don't even mind there isn't a blocklist; that's what I have PeerGuardian for. SPRINGHEELMAC Adobe released another update to version 9; it's 9.0.246.0. I prefer to use this on my PPC eMac as version 10 is a little too much for the old girl. It also has all the latest security updates like 10. It always me to still view all the material that is too choppy on 10. Here's the link: 'get.adobe.com/flashplayer' Simply select "Flash 9" from the drop down. Also, one benefit over this one is the installation. Unlike 9.0.159.0, it is self explanatory. Open the file and it shows with arrows where the files go. Drag the two files to two folders and you're done. While not as fancy as a self installer, its still idiot proof. SNOWWHITESICKETTE That is very good advice. I recommend using the older Flash and disabling the Hardware Acceleration setting permanently. I've read complaints by Mac users with new Macs that Flash causes problems for them as well. Playback issues, beach balls, and the internal fan runs full blast. Please fix as soon as possible; otherwise I see another KNOPP inspired Inquisition where every dissenter is deemed to be seeing things and incapable of operating their Macs intelligently without his EXPERT tutelage. I don't want to rain on the Dapplegrey developer's parade (afterall, I'm sure some people like the Dapplegrey launcher), but there's something a lot more sexy about letting users create their own game bundles complete with icon and documentation, launched from the Finder. SPRINGHEELMAC Flash Player 10 is HORRIBLE on PPC Macs. That said, the best version out there for PPC is 9.0.159. This will enable you to utilize sites like Myspace and whatever else has been asking you to upgrade from 9.0.124 without having to install 10. Get it at 'http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/'. Select "Flash Player 9 for System 10.1-10.3" from the drop down menu. The only problem is, it doesn't come with an installer. That's an easy enough fix; put the two items into "Library/Internet Plugins". 9.0.159 has the latest security features like 10, but its faster for us PPC users than 10. I was getting frustrated not being able to use some sites with 9 and 10 was totally hosing my system. With 9.0.159, I can have my cake and eat it too (for the time being, at least). Get it a shot. SPRINGHEELMAC "..better management of peers" under WHAT'S NEW above is an UNDERSTATEMENT!! I'm connecting to hundreds of peers now, something I've never been able to do before, even though I've always had Transmission's connectivity maxed out at 3000 peers. (Edit that in preferences, you won't be sorry.) In addition, my download speed has topped 1.0M, something I've never accomplished before. (It does decrease the upload speed, but once your downloads are finished, they will climb back up.) Try this version (1.50B4), you won't be sorry. Believe me, they have made improvements. The last beta was worlds better than anything since 1.34, and this version is the best one yet. I am truly impressed; I had almost given up on any new version of Transmission until the last beta. SPRINGHEELMAC Let me start by saying Transmission is the only torrent application I use. I've tried all the others and for one reason or another deleted each one in turn. (Vuse completely crippled my system with all of its extra BS.) That said, I've had problems with every version of Transmission since 1.22. I get fantastic upload 'seeding' speeds but terrible download speeds, if the torrents ever download at all. In addition I still get the infinite progress bar issue that stretches across the screen. I usually only get that now if I have Transmission set to open on login. I'd like to keep it that way since it's convenient. Quitting Transmission and opening it again usually fixes that problem, but not always. I try every version of Transmission for a few days, but I always end up uninstalling and going back to 1.22. Its a pain, as I have to re-attach the torrents I'm seeding. But once thats done, I see a dramatic increases in download speeds. With that said, I wouldn't trade Transmission for any other torrent app out there. 1.22 does everything I need it to do, and it does it well. I just hope I finally get a future version to work as well. I'm using a 1.42 GHz eMac with 2 gigs of RAM running OS 10.4.11 (Version 1.41b3)

You select from pre-set values, and like I previously stated, these worked just worked fine until a few versions ago. The download or upload speed would adjust according. You can adjust your rate of transfer on the fly, which makes it very convenient if you need to suddenly raise or lower it. I like Transmission because it is very Mac-like and takes the work out of setting up torrents. I'll just do what I've been doing until the speed adjustment works properly - pausing my transfers when I really need to use the phone or surf some complex sites. But I appreciate your advice, if not your sarcasm. But thanks for making the problem sound a whole lot more complicated than it is. (Version 1.33)

I generally leave it on 24/7 because I donate my idle time through BOINC (available here at MacUpdate) and like to share files with Transmission. MACUPDATE ADMIN You may want to check out the support forum from Transmission: http://forum.transmissionbt.com/ (Version 1.32)

Transmission | Aug 21 2008 |
MSWFUJOWDFFYC Make sure you're not getting kiloBITS and kiloBYTES mixed up. If you have a connection which allows you 256k of upload bandwidth, remember that's 256 kilo BITS. If you enter 128 kilo BYTES as your maximum upload speed, thinking that you're only using half of it, you've made a mistake. 128 kiloBYTES is 1024 kiloBITS! Remember, there are 8 bits in a byte. If you want 128 kiloBITS, you'd enter a maximum upload speed of 16 kiloBYTES. (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 21 2008 |
MSWFUJOWDFFYC Now that I'm actually looking at the transmission prefs, I can confirm that you are supposed to enter vaules as kiloBYTES per second. A capital "B" is bytes and a lower case "b" is bits. So, my advice in the above post is valid. (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 22 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Huh? I'm selecting from a drop-down menu. How again is it I'm supposed to specify between the two? Also, this wasn't a problem several versions ago, only recently. (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 22 2008 |
MSWFUJOWDFFYC "Huh?" right back at ya. I don't know what version of Transmission you're using, but on my copy (version 1.33) you enter bandwidth values into text boxes. What "drop down" menus are you referring to? (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 22 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC The ones via the drop down menu in the lower left corner of the program when its displayed on the screen, located right next to the "Speed Limit" turtle icon.

Transmission | Aug 24 2008 |
I'm not sure if this is the problem but if you click the "i" button on your main window while downloading and then click on the options button(far right, looks like a cogwheel) If your download and upload speeds are "unlimited" for example, you will not be able to use the pop down window that you have on the main window to actually change your speeds. You seem to have to change them from the options window. Hope this helps. (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 25 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Yeah, I've tried doing it both ways. I actually got it to work with the pull-down menu the other day, but more often than not it just prefers to max out. Luckily for me the stuff I have on continuous sharing isn't wanted by most and my upload rate doesn't stay that high anyway. It's just frustrating because it USED to work for me and I wouldn't have to pause my transfers. I'm thinking its gotta be interference on my end from some other app, but its not really causing me any grief. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep messing with it when I have time and I'll post the solution for others having that problem if I ever figure it out. (Version 1.33)

KOBALT No, you're not alone, SpringHeelMac ... same issue here where I never had before. :( See also this post over at the Transmission forums: forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5584 (Version 1.33)

Transmission | Aug 26 2008 |
ANAND PATEL I had the same issue, even after upgrading, and it was starting to irritate me - for I did not want to change torrent applications. This one has all I need with a low footprint. Get AppZapper, and remove the Transmission. AppZapper should find two other files (for a total of three files with the .APP file). Reinstall and set bandwidth caps. It now has worked for 6 hours, I am assuming it has been fixed. Just as a safe measure, I also set it in the drop down from the lower left hand side again. Hope this helps... (Version 1.33)

VisualHub | Aug 8 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Sorry about that; I figured it out. Visualhub saved the temp file as VISUAL_HUB.ISO in the same location as the original file. My bad. If anyone else had misplaced their Visualhub files, what I did was change the default save location to the desktop, so I always see it and delete it when I'm done burning. Makes it much easier than looking through a packed hard drive. (Version 1.34a)

VisualHub | Aug 8 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Ok, its probably something I'm doing, but here it goes... I select the files to burn to DVD, select "Author as DVD" and "Burn to DVD". Files being worked on are saved at the "same destination as original file." When VisualHub is finished, the DVD works great and the temporary file that was being converted on the hard drive is no longer there. Problem is, the available space on my hard drive is still showing that file as there. I've tried everything to find the temporary file and trash it, to no avail. Every time I use Visualhub my hard drive is getting fuller and fuller, by the exact size of the files I convert. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Other than that, I love Visualhub. It can't be beat for what it does. I add it to my essential video tools list, right next to "Perian" and "Flip4Mac". (Version 1.34a)

Transmission | Aug 3 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Ok, I figured it out. If anyone was having the same problem, all you need to do is add the torrent again and hit "Verify Local Data". It checks it and viola! The file is back in business. If that doesn't work, you can also move the file to the area you designated as the place for your unfinished downloads and do the same thing. Hope that helps somebody. Transmission really is a great BT program. I also recommend using it with "Peer Guardian." (Version 1.22)

SPRINGHEELMAC Absolutely the best torrent client out there. Gets past all those NAT problems I get with all the other torrent programs. I also like ability to use encrypted peers. That being said, I'm having a problem that is 100% my fault. I recently had to wipe and reinstall OSX. When I attempted to reseed the torrents I had, Transmission did not recognize that I already had the programs they were connected to and wanted to re-download them when I opened the torrents. Is there a way to correct this without downloading everything again? I don't really want to create another torrent either, as that will make multiple copies of the same program available for download, which is a waste. Any advice would be appreciated. Hide Folders | Jul 31 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC Great program, but I ran into a problem. For reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with "Hide Folders" I had to wipe my internal drive and do a clean install of OSX. To my horror, upon re-installing "Hide Folders", the folder I had made invisible on my external hard drive can't be found. Even when I do a spotlight search I can't locate the invisible files (which I could even when the folder they were in was invisible before). Is there anyway to reverse this? I believe they are still on the drive, as the space available hasn't changed. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. (Version 2008)

MIKURO Perian can play FLVs, but not SWF animations. QuickTime has built-in support for some SWFs, but not most recent ones. It seems like Apple has not updated that since QuickTime 5 or 6. Also, you need to jump through some hoops just to get QuickTime Player to let you TRY to open SWFs. (Version 3.7.15.6198)

SWF & FLV Player | May 5 2008 |
GANNET QuickTime *was* able to play swf files up to version 5 (Flash is up to version 10 now). As of QuickTime 7.3.1 Flash support has been completely locked out though. (Version 3.7.15.6198)

BitTorrent | Mar 4 2008 |
SPRINGHEELMAC I had the same problem, until I went into the prefs and adjusted the upload/download speeds. It helps to lower the upload speeds, at least until you get a complete file. Then when I'm done, I increase it while my computer is idle so others can get it quickly. It could also be the particular torrent. The one I tried was obscure and didn't have that many seeds, but I got it! Overall, I find BitTorrent to be my favorite; it does exactly what its supposed to do (upload and download torrents) and none of the other CPU-hoggin' crap! (Version 4.27.2)

SPRINGHEELMAC I always attempt to rip a DVD with the latest version of MTR I have. Sometimes the newest doesn't work, and I just keep going down the ladder until one does. So far this has ALWAYS worked. I simply label them in my applications folder by version number. I suggest everyone does this, as I just had a disc that only version 2.6.6 was able to rip! SPRINGHEELMAC Great program! Excellent for non-commercial DVD reproduction. Only one thing, and it doesn't really effect anything, it's more of a cosmetic thing - when I burn multiple discs, a "ghost image" of the last transfer stays on the screen. Can you fix this? (Version rev271)

ROSKAKORI By default, the cache is in ~/Library/Caches/jomic and grows up to 256 MB. You can change that by adding for example the following lines to ~/Library/Preferences/jomic.properties: cacheDir=/Volumes/SomeOldDrive/Caches/jomic archiveCacheSizeInMb=4096 It's not documented in the manual, but it's been like that for ages and I don't have any intention to change it. Maybe someday there will be a GUI for the cache settings. (Version 0.9.25)
