About SnowWhiteSickette
I love trying new software. If it's compatible with my computer and I can think of a use for it, I will download it and give it a whirl. Developers who still make software that is compatible with PPC Macs, especially if it works with Tiger, are my favorite people in the world. I like G3 Macs best of all. The cheerful colors enhance the fun inherent in any Macs. Almost done honing my dream G3 iMac. I have taken my dead Strawberry 400MHz slot-loader's case and installed it on the fastest G3 iMac Apple made, a 700MHz SE, that previously lived life clad in dull Graphite. That is NOT a mod for the faint of heart, with the complicated take apart and the CRT. I put in the maximum 1GB RAM, and put in a 120GB hard drive. It's great. The only thing that bugs me is the CD-RW. I had a DVD-ROM in the dead one, but I really want a combo drive in there. Then it will be finished, unless I put a massive drive in there (I bought Speed Tools which helps with that), or until I figure out how to rip the guts out and get an Intel Mac Mini to work in that case. : )

TechTool Pro

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  There are differences between version 4.6.2 and the current version. The interface, for one, is completely overhauled. There are some differences in features. It is not what you've been using, which does still work for the operating system you used to use it with before you upgraded. Any version of TechTool you purchase is only going to work with Mac OS X versions that existed and were supported by that particular TTP version. It's the nature of the beast, unfortunately.

iDefrag
Nov 5 2009

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I think Harv is thinking of remapping the disk, not defragging. (To fix bad blocks on a hard drive, Harv?) SuperDuper! does not remap the drive when it erases the data. You can do that with Disk Utility. In the Erase function, there is an option to write zeros to the drive. Zeroing out is what remaps any bad blocks, simply erasing does not. One pass is enough, unless there is very sensitive data being erased. Zeroing out takes a lot longer than erasing, and additional passes multiply that amount of time by the number of passes. Defragging is done as maintenance of the existing files on a drive, which would be pointless if the drive were going to be erased.

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I've never needed seven hours to remaster with this software, but I guess the size of the movie might require so much time. I've used this to remaster several movies, and it took anywhere from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, using a G4 iMac (1 GH, 1 GB, 80 GB), which qualifies as "underpowered." (I wish Apple would update the firmware to hold more RAM!) The movies were from 4.5 - 9.6 GB in size, and I shrank all of them- full remastering. Using 10.5.8, all current updates. Couple of suggestions- have you run Disk Utility lately, to check the disk directory and to repair permissions? Is your hard drive relatively full? If the drive is okay and has at least twice the space of the file needing remastering, seven hours does seem long to me...

iPhoto Batch Enhancer
Oct 23 2009

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I have every major version of iPhoto, from 1.0 (on a system-specific disk) to the current iPhoto 8 (iLife '09). I wanted to try this out, and noted the technical requirements listed here of 10.4+ and iPhoto 4. With iPhoto 4, iPBE kept giving me an error message instead of enhancing any pictures. It didn't crash outright. I don't think it is my configuration, as I zeroed out the drive and reinstalled Tiger (+ all updates) 36 hours beforehand. So I upgraded iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 5 and tried again. It works just fine with iPhoto 5.

Tidy Up!
Oct 16 2009
*****

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I have several Macs and backup drives. Because I like to have certain files on all of my Macs, I noticed I had a lot of duplicates, particularly in one backup partition that all the Macs access. With the massive size of drives these days, I felt I could no longer do the job of removing duplicates manually. Who has the time? I downloaded several programs that locate duplicates, searching for the "right" app for me. Tidy Up! was the winner, hands down. There are cheaper applications, and my runner up choice was free. But Tidy Up! impressed me so much, I bought licenses for the version 1 for Tiger and version 2 for Leopard. I got both for $40, on sale at the Kagi page.

Tidy Up! is FAST. I scanned an entire 120GB drive on an old G3 iMac, and Tidy Up! spotted thousands of duplicates and was done in less than a minute. Amazing! Some of the apps I tried were so slow I gave up and quit mid scan. Tidy Up! has plenty of customizable settings that can be set for scanning and/or deleting. I prefer to delete manually, because I want the greatest control over what is deleted. Some of the duplicates that Tidy Up! showed me were files I didn't even want one copy of, much less multiples. I am an icon junkie, and Tidy Up! helps me keep 15,000-20,000 icons per Mac duplicate-free. I thought I liked the version 1 of the application better, until I tweaked the preferences on version 2. Then they offered the same options on start up. Until I decide to learn more about the features, it's easier for me if both apps are alike.

Tidy Up! deserves better ratings than it currently has, IMO. Most of the poor reviews are for the price to upgrade, not performance. I don't have a problem with someone leaving a poor rating for that reason, as that the reviewer's judgment call. But the application itself is very good. Tidy Up! 2 has a different look, and additional features over version 1. There are also complaints about the price from people who never bought a license. IMO Dupe Guru and its offsprings are the real rip-off in this category. Three programs from 20-25 bucks a pop and Tidy Up! finds the duplicates that take three Dupe Guru apps. Tidy Up! is a bargain in comparison, and faster by far. Tidy Up! is not cheap, but if money is more important than time, there are free apps that can help remove duplicates. My only complaint with Tidy Up! is I would have liked if the trial period let you delete more stuff, as the amount alloted is so small it is hard to judge how fast larger actions will be if you buy the license.

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  That is very good advice. I recommend using the older Flash and disabling the Hardware Acceleration setting permanently. (Located in the Flash Player settings- accessible by right directly in the box of the offending Flash content. I've got several older Macs and this helped each of them immensely.

I've read complaints by Mac users with new Macs that Flash causes problems for them as well. Playback issues, beach balls, and the internal fan runs full blast. I wonder if Hardware Acceleration is causing some of their problems too...

SuperDuper!
Oct 2 2009
*****

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  SuperDuper! is a gem. I use it on all of my Macs that run Mac OS X. I've tried other backup applications, and SuperDuper! is the best I've used. It's easy, faster than the others, and best of all, free! The developer has links to download older versions of SD for those Mac users that haven't upgraded their OS as long ago as 10.2. (I appreciate that, as a Tiger and Leopard user.)

SD is so easy to use. Hook up the backup drive, open SD, show it where you want it to backup, select backup type and other options (if you have bought a license), and tell it to go. The second time is even easier, as SD remembers where you backed up to the last time. For example, three of my Macs share one external FireWire drive, along with media backups and other data. I have six partitions on that drive, including one apiece for the Macs. SuperDuper! remembers which partition belongs to which Mac every time. Very nice, and saves me from accidentally backing up to the wrong partition. (Not that I'd ever do THAT.)

I bought a license after backing up once with the free version. I wanted to use the feature allowing SD to remember what it's already backed up. That saves a lot of time compared to backing up the entire drive each time it's backed up. The license is not needed to make a full, bootable backup of a Mac. That's a great service to our community, and makes it worthwhile to buy the license without the extra features.

The developer may be the best there is in terms of support. I've never needed any, but have read the SD forum, and noticed how thoroughly and quickly he replies to questions. Sometimes a question is answered in three minutes. Can't beat that!

SuperDuper! is very stabile, and every backup I've made has booted perfectly. I like that I can see and access every file of the backup if I need to. Some backup utilities make large, mysterious files that can't be viewed through the Finder. I don't trust a backup if I can't see what's inside. SD has given me the freedom to take risks with my Macs I'd have been reluctant to try without it. I've successfully installed unsupported software (like iLife 06 on a G3 iMac) because I know if there's a problem, I can restore from my backup.

Every so often, I zero out my internal drive and reinstall the OS. (Archive-install takes up far too much room on a smaller internal hard drive, IMO.) SuperDuper! is superb with this, as my backup can be used with Migration Assistant, or just to drag something over manually. I can make a new backup of the clean OS on a different partition or drive, and keep the old backup for archival purposes. (I always burn photos and other important files to disk. NOTHING is better to archive important files than keeping multiple, burned CDs and DVDs of anything that can't be replaced. SuperDuper! and Time Machine are not substitutes for having precious files burned to disk, kept in a safe place.)

All in all, SuperDuper! is great. Anyone looking for an easy, reliable way to make a backup that can be booted should give it a try.

Apple iPhoto

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  My complaint is that the OS and so many applications are bundled with so many languages, when I only need one. I think I should petition Congress to lean on Apple to remove the superfluous languages that take up room on my hard drive. Sounds great! I think Congress ought to lean on every company that makes a product I use, especially the ones I like. Surely governmental regulations are going to influence production in a positive way, with no downside. Getting the government involved is much better than writing a note to Apple. Thanks for giving me the idea.

P.S. Waiting for the EU to release an alternative OS to Apple, as it would without a doubt be superior in every way. ;)

Apple Security Update
Sep 19 2009

Unless you are running the version of 10.4 that is on your installation DVD, you should not repair disk permissions while booted from the DVD. The default permissions change with the OS updates, so if you run 10.4.11 and repair permissions using 10.4.3 (for example) your permissions will definitely be incorrect. Use the Disk Utility application from your applications folder for repairing permissions, and use Disk Utility booted from the DVD to repair the disk.

I have updated three G3s running Tiger with the update and had no problems. It did not take as long as the last security update, and generated less hard drive noise than its predecessor. (Thankfully.) Did you get things to work on your G4? Have you run Applejack? Personally, I never bother with archive-and-install. If I am reinstalling, I: download/burn all the needed Apple updates to CD (I don't trust Software Update); backup; test the backup; boot to Tiger DVD; open Disk Utility; zero out the disk; boot OS 9 CD; reinstall OS 9; update to OS 9.2.2; boot Tiger DVD; install Tiger; apply combo update, security update, Quicktime, java, etc.; install latest versions of apps compatible w/Tiger; drag over any wanted data from my backup. I repair permissions in Tiger after installation, combo update, security update, iTunes update and Safari update. Erase/install is faster than archive/install, but it takes a while. I feel this method saves disk space and lessens the chance that any corrupted data will be carried over with the reinstallation. Just my opinion, and this methods works well for me. YMMV.

Adobe Flash Player
Sep 3 2009
*....

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  My review is biased, because I hate Flash. It's been so many years, I've actually forgotten if Flash ever worked normally on one of my Macs. I think it did almost a decade ago. Flash makes the internet very unpleasant for Mac users. I wish it would fade away for good. Adobe Flash saves a file of cookies in the user library that are not deleted the usual way. There is no preference panel to access Flash, unless you go to the Adobe website. I think it's very rude of them to save unwanted debris on my hard drive. I found a bunch of remnants from websites I hadn't visited in a year. No thank you. And Flash allows websites to interact with those cookies, and even access your built-in camera and microphone. I don't know about you folks, but when I want to share my live video and audio, I use iChat or some other program. Not my web browser. (There may be a useful aspect to this, but to me it's just another potential security hole.)

Dear Flash, I loathe you. You are a buggy, flawed, stuttering, choppy mess of a plug-in. You are the only thing that ruins the otherwise perfect enjoyment of my Macs. And you are everywhere. I hope to see the day when you are nothing but a distant bad memory. Sincerely, SWS

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Freezes and hangs more often than it works. It's supposed to be compatible with Tiger, and it does work. But hangs, sometimes even before any keys are pressed. When it works normally, and too many keys are pressed, it freezes. It gets so locked up force quit doesn't work. I have to use the power button, and this has happened at least five times during the demo period. Not a good thing. I tried it on two computers, but it was the same each time.

Otherwise, it's not my favorite app but my little one really likes it. He laughs constantly when he plays. (Until it locks up, then he gets pretty upset.) Twenty dollars is too much for this app in my opinion, even if it worked properly. But my toddler likes it so much I probably would buy it. There is no chance I'm going to pay twenty dollars for an app that doesn't work. Hopefully the developer is still working on this project, because it definitely appeals to the pre-preschool set.

Monolingual

*****

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Monolingual works well. I used it to remove some of the junk I don't need that clutters up my hard drive. I ran Monolingual to remove each of the three nuisance types it helps you delete. (Languages, keyboard layouts, and architectures.)

When running languages, I unchecked all English options, but I probably would have been fine just leaving English and US English unchecked. Got rid of all keyboard layouts I'll never need, as well as the Intel binary that just clog up my hard drive. Everything was smooth, fast, and worked perfectly.

I was so happy with the results, I ran Monolingual on two more Macs that day. Each Mac had good results, and for each Mac the process was fast, trouble-free and uneventful. Nice app, but people who don't read instructions before diving in, or who don't know what the keyboard layout or architecture type they are deleting is used for, should tread with caution. (Based on reading some of the comments.) Intel binary is nothing I need running a PPC, and deleting it isn't going to cause a problem. But for Intel Macs, I suggest learning about Rosetta and why you might not want to delete PPC code if you don't know if it serves a purpose. Backing up the disk ahead of time is a good idea.

I believe Monolingual could be used to make a DIY optimized version of an application. For instance, if you have a G3, you can remove the architecture for the G4 and G5, as well as Intel and others. I'm going to try optimizing some of my larger Universal apps and see if it helps. I always back up my hard drive with SuperDuper! before doing anything like this, just in case.

Monolingual saved 180MB on one Mac, 250MB on another, and 750MB on the third Mac I tried it with. I always do a custom install when I install OS X, and leave Additional Languages, Printer Drivers and Additional Fonts unchecked. I think the point updates sneak the languages back into the system, because Monolingual found stuff I know I deliberately did NOT install in the OS.

Monolingual worked as advertised for me, and freed up valuable disk space.

iUSBCam
Jul 7 2009
*****

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I am very happy with iUSBCam. It works as advertised, with a Hue Clique USB webcam and 10.4.11. The developer is helpful and prompt responding to questions. I had asked about the licensing, and the developer informed me that my license is good for all of my personal Macs, which makes the low price even better. The trial period is one week, which is plenty of time to determine if it will work.

A driver must also be installed for the USB camera to work. I got mine from the webcam manufacturer's website- the most recent driver instead of the outdated one that came with the CD. If your camera manufacturer doesn't have a Mac OS X driver, check out Macam, a free USB webcam driver that is available here at MacUpdate.

For some reason, the feature that IMO makes iUSBCam a necessity, is not even mentioned in the description above. It enables older Macs that don't meet the requirements set by Apple to broadcast video in iChat and other IM programs. I installed it on a 400MHz G3 iMac and a 466MHz iBook SE, and it works perfectly. Also enables an external iSight to work on older Macs that fall under the requirements. Prior to iUSBCam, the iSight would power itself off after showing a few seconds of video- enough to know that the computer was not the problem. Because of iUSBCam, I can use my USB webcam in iChat, or my FireWire iSight on all of my Macs. Fantastic!

Glims

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Unlike the earlier commenter, I'm not worried about Glims being malware, but its auto-affiliation feature caused me to uninstall too. I belong to some loyalty rewards programs that put money into a college savings account or give other rewards on purchases made through certain links from the websites. AFAIK, only one affiliate can receive the commission. I uninstalled Glims to be on the safe side, because putting every penny I can into my child's college fund is very important to me.

I like Glims, especially the way it reloads my last session in a snap. Safari is very slow at reloading without Glims. If the developer is reading, I'd be very happy to pay for a version of Glims that does not insert your affiliate ID, as Misha suggests above. Glims is certainly worth paying for, and I hope you consider Misha's idea. Thank you for your time.

None of his friends knew what he was planning. I understand that your situation isn't easy, but a keylogger will only tell you what your son does on the computer. That's not really enough to know where his head is at. It may give you a false sense of security, and put off getting help for the boy while you still can. AirRadar
May 17 2009

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Felix01 is right about bad economic times being a two-way street. I would think that a recession is a time to lower prices, not raise them. So many people have seen investments disappear, salaries shrink, lost their homes or even lost their jobs altogether. I doubt those people will be buying a lot of unnecessary software. Yes, I get that developers hurt too. But opting to charge for a program that was free at the worst possible time may backfire, and cause the customers to disappear in droves. The time to raise prices are when the economy is stable and people can afford to pay. Considering this app was free, it wasn't generating a dime of revenue in the first place.

I suspect that the developer has considered how appealing an application of this nature would be to people who've been hit hard by the bad economy. I hope not, but it makes sense. Vultures are the vilest creatures in the air, and MY radar tells me there's one hovering above us now.

All I have to do is click on the AirPort icon in my menu bar, and instantly about seven wireless networks are available as options. (That's why my network is hidden, closed to all but computers I specify manually, and password protected.) I am sure that AirRadar does more than AirPort, but AirPort doesn't cost anything extra and if all you want is to join an open network, it'll do that.

Camino
Mar 21 2009
****.

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I've been using Camino for over two years now, and I find it to be a great alternative to Safari. Camino has ad-blocking built in, and for that reason alone it beats Safari. Camino is less-bloated and faster than Safari MOST of the time. I like to open hundreds of tabs when I am browsing the internet, and until recently*, Camino could handle the most tabs before crashing/hanging/freezing. *(I have had unexpected success with Safari's tab capacity on one old G3 that I use part of the time, 1200+ tabs open and hardly slowing at all! On my other computers, Camino works best with many tabs.)

Version 1.5 was better for me than any of the 1.6 releases I've tried. In 1.6, when I use Google and click to open new tabs, I get asked if I want to set a cookie (my preference) but fails to remember what I'd clicked on just before the cookie nag pops up. I have to click again for it to open that tab. I don't remember this in the older version. In an earlier download of 1.6, the tab scrolling got wonky sometimes causing me to close a tab that was not the one I thought. I will update about version 1.6.6 when I've used it more. Lastly, I don't use Camino 1.6 as often as before, because I find it to be more bloated than the previous releases. It's still a good browser, and I deleted Firefox because Camino has replaced it as my alternative to Safari. I will continue to use Camino, as it's been such a good browser, but I do hope it becomes less bloated in the future.
