The cut item doesn't disappear in Windows either. It is only moved when pasted. If you "cut" a file and then forget about it and then "cut" another file or whatnot, you don't lose the original file you cut. It simply stays where it was. The actual file icon gets ghosted to show that you "cut" it, but it doesn't actually get moved or deleted until you paste it somewhere else. Having said that, this command then works very similarly to the Windows command.
