SIMON WOLF  This is a very useful app and it's great to see that it has been updated for Snow Leopard.

MoneyWell

SIMON WOLF  After one month of using MoneyWell I have not only managed to not over-spend but I've also managed to set aside money for some special purchases over the coming months. It really is one of those life-changing applications and I just wish I had realised that a budgeting-based application works much more effectively than a simple transaction-logging application a long time ago.

Bento
Mar 24 2008

SIMON WOLF  That's a bit strange because I definitely have moved bentodb files around between user accounts and my home and work Mac. Maybe it is something to do with media files but that wouldn't explain why my simple test to move a backup file to a new user account failed.

Anyway, posting it in their forums might be a good idea and they can be found at http://forums.filemaker.com/fmbnto/

Bento

SIMON WOLF  Apologies, you're right, you cannot restore a backup to another user. Have you reported it as a bug in their forums? However, it is possible to simply copy the bento.bentodb file in your user's Library -> Application Support -> Bento folder if you want to copy everything to another machine or user.

SIMON WOLF  I don't know how you are doing your backups but if I backup my Bento data via the menu command and then restore it my forms, table layouts, etc. are exactly as they should be.

DrawIt
Jan 31 2008
*****

SIMON WOLF  As a software developer working with a limited budget I cannot afford to employ a dedicated graphics designer so I have been looking for an application which would allow me to create great looking graphics quickly and easily. DrawIt is the first one that I've 'clicked' with and I obviously timed it right since it seems that earlier versions were less than stellar. However it now appears that the developer is on the right track and not only is his application first rate but he responds to emails quickly and is very helpful indeed.

Circus Ponies NoteBook

SIMON WOLF  This is a truly excellent notebook application that is easy to use, powerful and looks great. I have various notebooks set up for various purposes ranging from simple notes through to documenting individual projects.

My only gripe is that the AppleScript support is somewhat lacking and although some basics have been put in place it is an incomplete implementation. Adding AppleScript support would allow simple tasks such as word counting to be performed independently of the developer adding it as a new feature and would make it much more powerful.

Script Debugger

SIMON WOLF  As a new-comer to AppleScript I was struggling to both understand Dictionaries and also to debug my code using the good, but somewhat limited, Apple Script Editor. Althought as a hobbyist I was somewhat put off by the relatively high price I downloaded ScriptDebugger and instantly fell in love. This is a fantastically powerful development environment which makes understanding applications' dictionaries much easier and provides extremely powerful debugging tools. As a birthday present to myself I bought a copy and I am delighted and know that the price of the application will be recouped many times over by the time Script Debugger will save me whilst writing scripts.

ExifRenamer

SIMON WOLF  What a fantastic utility. I wanted to migrate my photo management from iPhoto to an alternative application and I needed to rename my source files that has been exported to multiple folders due to duplicate file names. ExifRenamer happily worked through my folders and renamed the files exactly as I wanted with no problems at all. After this I will also be using it to rename new photos that I download from my camera.

BluePhoneElite

SIMON WOLF  I was looking for a very straightforward SMS manager that would allow me to use my Nokia 6310i with my Mac for sending SMSs. BluePhoneElite allows me to do exactly that and the fairly modest registration fee is worth it to me. As someone who has developed freeware and shareware in the past I have no problem with the developer trying to recoup some rewards from his hard work and perhaps those that do not wish to pay him could write their own alternative software.
