Soundfly | Nov 3 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT A simple and effective piece of software. Works well, with impressive quality. Unfortunately, the underlying software, Soundflower, has a bug that causes lag to accumulate over time. This makes Soundfly unsuitable for listening to audio that must sync with video. (Version 1.0.1)

EyeTV | Oct 15 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT In brief: Disappointing. To expand: EyeTV lacks too many basic features to be considered exemplary. It's currently impossible to schedule a reminder for a TV show, or edit a recording whilst hearing audio from a Live TV window. Furthermore, twin-tuner devices (such as the Nova-TD I have) are very poorly implemented and reveal a whole host of problems, ranging from poor scheduling-conflict handling to poor management of Live TV windows. I'm also not convinced it produces that great a picture, compared with WinTV on XP (which I run on the same machine)—the latter seems sharper with less blockiness. It's also a glitchy app. For example, even at this late stage in development it isn't multi-user compatible, so some minor changes to channel lists (for example) require administrative authentication. The app can fail to receive available channels if you "flick" too quickly, and the sometimes loses them altogether—I've been inexplicably missing more than three channels for weeks now despite using the same software on the same machine with the same aerial connection. More annoyingly, the app has a habit of pausing playback (Live or a recording) for no apparent reason—I used to think I was nudging the mouse or whatever, but it happens when I'm across the room too! Finally, the company seems to be slow to react or innovate. There have been a whole host of bug reports (over and above those I've mentioned) and feature requests in the forums for a considerable amount of time that have yet to be actioned. For example, Growl support is available, but was scripted by a forum user and not the company. At the end of the day, though, and to quote from Demolition Man: "It's what we got." (Version 3.2)

SIR GADABOUT A well-presented RSS reader with a deal-breaking flaw. On the whole this app looks nice, is intuitive to use and offers sufficient features for basic RSS reading. However, the deal-breaker is this: it seems it will only download a maximum of 20 articles for any given feed. This, at any rate, has been my experience. The MacUpdate RSS feed amongst many others (eg. DealMac's "Today's Edition" feed) often has more articles than this for download—so what are you supposed to do? All you can do is go to the website and browse the rest (if there are any) there. Or use Mail.app, which is not ideal, IMHO. So, like I say, a deal-breaker. Hopefully the developer will fix this not minor flaw, and all-of-a-sudden he'll be close to having a top-notch RSS reader on his hands! All that would remain is a partner app for the iPhone/iPod touch and he'd be sailing… (Version 1.1.5)

SIR GADABOUT Keywords are now working again! Fantastic, now I can ditch PlugSuit and Keywurl (which, despite the update for Safari 4 Final, I never got to work…). Great! (OS X 10.5.7, Safari 4.0.1) (Version 1.0b18)

x264Encoder | May 16 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT A question for the developer: Can this codec be used to create movies compatible with the iPod 5.5 (iPod Video or iPod Classic)? (Version 1.0.3)

x264 QuickTime Codec | May 14 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT Anyone have any experience using this codec to produce iPod Classic-compatible files? Can it add the atom? I'm looking for a good replacement for the built-in H.264 encoder for exporting from EyeTV, and this seems the most likely candidate. The developer's Berlios website has no relevant forum posts (or any beyond 2007 for that matter), no wiki, no documentation and no home-page, so I thought I might get a better response here (also I really didn't want to create a user account for yet another website…)

Combine PDFs | May 11 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT Also, it's possible to set up Combine PDFs as a PDF Service. I use it to combine multi-page web reviews into one simple PDF file. AFAIK you can't do this in Preview.app. However, I'm still using v3.0. I'm not sure whether there are any merits to paying €20 / $30 and upgrading to 4.2 just for this; it was a free app when I started using it. (Version 4.2)

SlimTime Pro | Jan 22 2009 |
SIR GADABOUT Why would you call your software Quicktime Pro in any case, knowing that this software title is already taken, and not by a minor application? Baffling. Let me suggest you do everyone a favour and just change the software's name to SlimTime Player (or perhaps, "SlickTime Player"?). (Version 1.0)

SafariPlus | Jul 16 2007 |
SIR GADABOUT 1.5.1 /should/ be used on 10.4.9 after the installation of Quicktime 7.2 and Security Update 2007-006. One of these updates broke SafariPlus 1.5 for me but updating to 1.5.1 fixed it. (Version 1.5.1)

SIR GADABOUT Same problem here with the encoding cycle (Panther 10.3.9). Still, it's nice to have the .flv file anyway, seeing as you can view it in VLC. Good enough for me! (Version 1.0)
