SHERMAN I absolutely DISAGREE. Nisus Express is a fine product. I own it. But Pro is a MUCH more full-featured application that clearly involved a great deal of work to develop. It's worth the expense. It's worthwhile for Nisus to have both products. I have users who need all the features of Pro, and those who don't. And there was an upgrade path for Express users. I also own Scrivener. Another fine product, but no way a competitor for NW Pro. Can you do a PowerSearch in Scriv? Cross-references? An index or table of contents? Wrap text around images? GraphicConverter X | Jul 26 2007 |
SHERMAN "An obvious cash grab"? Give me a break! I paid for this shareware gem so long ago I can't remember, and every single update, major and minor, since then has been absolutely FREE. GraphicConverter is a workhorse for many people. A $20 upgrade fee after many years of free and significant improvements hardly counts as "an obvious cash grab." Look to companies like DataViz or whoever it is that currently markets Endnote if you want to see prime examples of that. Lemke is one of the good guys in this business. (Version 6.0)

SHERMAN And you've polled every other user? Thanks for the advice, but of course I've restarted the machine. And I've tried to determine if there are any interactions with other applications. Yes, this is my experience. And I'm sharing it with others. If it's not a problem on your machine, that's just wonderful for you. But this *is* beta software, and I think reporting issues here that others may experience is worthwhile. Notice I didn't give it a bad review because of this. And yes, I've reported it to Google tech support too. (Version 1.0.1.126)

Nisus Writer Pro | Apr 13 2007 |
SHERMAN Replying to the comment below: Nisus Writer Pro is a quantum leap up from Express. I think you need to wait and see what the upgrade price will be for current Express users before complaining about being stabbed in the back (wow!). And as for purchasing Mellel: yes, purchase both. I did. They're both excellent applications. (Version 1.0b1)

ReceiptWallet | Apr 9 2007 |
SHERMAN This is a GREAT program. Simple, with a focused function that does just what it was designed to do with great elegance. I keep not only scanned in receipts but also PDF receipts (emailed, or webpage receipts). Also, my bank lets me download PDF monthly statements. I use ReceiptWallet to keep these too. Printing them all up as a report is very useful (especially come tax time). Developer is amazingly responsive. (Version 1.1)

JESS2006 Do you have Mailtags installed? I had the same problem. Turns out MailTags doesn't reinstall the Spotlight importer even if you have the latest beta. Data Backup | Mar 29 2007 |
SHERMAN I waited for v.3 and I must say I'm disappointed. The interface (they claim it has been redesigned) is still the old, cramped interface. The areas where you see the source and destination paths cannot be expanded and often are so small that you can't see the entire path (sometimes scroll bars appear when needed, but not always). Functionally, it seems to burn CDs well. But I've had it crash *several* times when trying to select a source or destination, both when backing up and when restoring. Worse, when I tried to do a restore to my desktop, DataBackup changed the permissions on my desktop folder -- everything on the desktop disappeared, and I couldn't create a folder or file on the desktop. I finally figured out that the desktop folder permissions had been set to System; changing it back fixed the problem. But it certainly doesn't give much confidence in a backup program! GyazMail | Jan 26 2007 |
SHERMAN I'm with Tuishimi. I am so close to switching to GyazMail, but it's the tiny things that count at this point (now that it has IMAP -- yay!!!!). I would miss Mail Act-On terribly. I devised a workaround (using QuicKeys), but nothing can match Act-On's elegance. And I really like the way Mail tokenizes addresses so that they're easy to move between the address fields. Also, another small feature that is so nice: After I've started a reply in Mail, if I then select Shift-Cmd-R it switches to Reply All, without needing to backtrack and start the reply all over again. GyazMail doesn't permit this. If the developer would add just a few of these power features, he'd have a true Mail knockout, I think. From what we can see so far about Leopard Mail, it has nothing much to appeal to power users (HTML templates? Blah). For now, I'm still in a holding pattern on GyazMail. (Version 1.5.2)

PowerMail | Jan 22 2007 |
SHERMAN I've used it. It is screaming fast and has lots of nice features. But the poor IMAP implementation keeps me from now using it, or paying for an upgrade. Please developer, please: fix your IMAP implementation. There's an entire base of people out there who would dearly love the features of PowerMail but simply MUST have better IMAP than you currently offer. (Version 5.5.3)

GyazMail | Jan 5 2007 |
SHERMAN Well well well... GyazMail gets IMAP support. This is a sea change in the mail client environment. I find it interesting that a small, one-person developer can add IMAP support (and it seems pretty robust too), when larger developers can't seem to or don't want to. Where is the IMAP support in Mailsmith? PowerMail is an otherwise great product, but their IMAP support is awful. The problem is, though, that there are now so many incredibly useful addons to Apple Mail (MailTags, MailActOn, Notification), as well as other applications that have tightly integrated support for Mail (DEVONthink Pro Office for example). Still, kudos to this developer! (Version 1.5)

EagleFiler | Dec 6 2006 |
SHERMAN This is an absolutely incredible new application. It surpasses Yojimbo, SOHO, even DEVONthink (which has other useful features though which set it apart in many ways from EagleFiler). The rate of development is breathtaking. At this pace, Michael Tsai will have knock-your-socks of v.2 in no time. Multiple library support, transparent capture, amazing tag flexibility. Ability to archive email (including IMAP) -- this is not a one-trick pony. All of this and it comes from a developer we know we can trust to provide good support and continued development. (Version 1.1)

SHERMAN Note to email application developers: IMAP. Many of us crucially depend on IMAP. If the application doesn't support it, no matter how good it is, this is a deal breaker. Gyaz has been promising IMAP for a long time. Is it coming? (Version 1.3.8)

SHERMAN Try this new beta. I tried earlier versions, and they were terrible. This new beta works pretty darned well! There's lots of missing features (Chronos is up front about that), but what's there now is not bad at all. Speed is hugely improved, it syncs well with my Treo, functionality is improved. I'll definitely be keeping this beta through the 30-day demo period and testing it further. (Version 5.1b3)

FoxTrot Personal Search | Apr 21 2006 |
SHERMAN Incredibly powerful and useful. If you're thinking "Yeah, I have Spotlight, and it was free" then think again. FoxTrot is instantaneous. It lets you do those good boolean searches that Spotlight makes impossible to do (or to remember how to do). I can't believe how fast it finds Mail messages, and then shows me the subject line, mailbox location, and the full text of the message in preview. One drawback -- it doesn't automatically keep the index up to date. Hope that gets added soon! (Version 1.0.9)

SHERMAN Exactly my point there, twistermc. Reread my comment. This is exactly NOT the kind of solution we need. It's a one-time, one way converter from AB to and LDIF file that can then be imported into TB. Not even close to what I said is needed. (Version 1.5)

Thunderbird | Jan 12 2006 |
SHERMAN Lots of people comment on the lack of import of contacts, and many others point to one-time import solutions such as Java apps. I think it's important to point out that a one-time import of contacts is NOT SUFFICIENT. Many of us use the Mac AddressBook to sync to our PDAs. We need either a tight integration between TB and AddressBook that goes both ways, or else conduits for syncing the TB address book with Palm PDAs. Until this happens -- and until I can easily import messages from Mail -- I cannot even consider switching, even though many of the other features of TB are especially appealing. (Version 1.5)
