SHANE C SMITH  What the hell happened to this software?! Bugs, crashes, and bloatware. Get rid of the animations and templates please! At least offer the software as an install so you have the option to not install the templates and any other software it comes with. How about make a PPC and separate Intel version?

This is by far the worst version of this software to date.

SHANE C SMITH  I used to have a paid version of this software years ago but found it didn't work all that well. This new version does look promising however most applications now use sparkle to autoupdate. You can do a lot more with this application I just find it hard to justify spending $20 to have macupdate on my desktop. What I wish would get an update is MUMenu but I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

SHANE C SMITH  I'll hold of on giving a review since I feel it's missing a couple key things. 1) when messages arrive I have no idea who there are from. Adding the recipients email address would greatly improve the UI. 2) Having multiply email accounts is a very nice feature but I no way of knowing from which email account the message came from. I think this may be a bug. Since their are tabs I shouldn't see messages from messages from tab B and the same from tab A. Overall this is a very sleek application I just need a couple of extra things added to be useful for myself.

MISHA  There is definitely a propensity to complain rather than commend here. If an app works, people generally are pleased that it does what it says and leave it at that.

If an app doesn't work, people seek out venues to voice their displeasure.

TuneUp has 3000+ downloads from here and 5 bad reviews. While 0 good reviews isn't a very positive sign, 5 out of 3000 isn't exactly a worthwhile sample.

Should we assume 2995 are happy with the app? Maybe not. But I'm sure it's not 0%.

We're trying to figure out ways to entice people to review apps they like more. Any ideas, feel free to share.

Mh, that is not very helpful. You may not like the interface, but others definitely do like it a lot. You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but that doesn't make the interface of CDFinder bad, you just don't like it.

"The interface is in need of a redesign. Please, no more pop up windows"

What exactly do you mean? Do you rather have the limited all-in-one window approach? Please be a little bit more specific!

Thanks.

CORPSECORPS  Sorry, i must UN-second that.

It's hard to explain. It's something about having to essentially design your own way of organizing things and in some places being provided too much information while in others not enough. The right pane is okay for browsing, which i rarely do, but getting a second window for searches annoys.

The underpinnings seem nice, but the UI all feels awkward. In the time i've used the software i must have recreated my method of organization of left pane items several times, none of which has seemed satisfactory. I still find myself avoiding the use of the software unless i must because nothing about it is quite right. I can often take some guesses which disc on my shelf is going to contain what i'm looking for, faster than i can locate the item using CDF.

I use it because it's the least evil of the catalog apps, not because i really like it.

Jul 25 2009

CORPSECORPS  I discovered a specific case for an example of why i don't find CDF all that useful. I'm looking for CD & DVD media which contain disk images or other archives of fonts.

I can search catalog info only and find media with "font" in the name, but i also need to find archives (dmg, zip, sit) ON CD's and DVD's which don't have "font" in the name.

I don't see a way to search ONLY the contents of particular media types, except by choosing to Find only in "selected" catalogs, in which case i have to actually select them by hand; but they're scattered throughout a hierarchical folder system.

In another attempt at accomplishing the same thing I did an overall search of my catalogs for names containing '.dmg' (though some archives i'm looking for may be in SIT or ZIP files). Though it's possible to search the results of the list and find DMG files containing fonts, now they aren't restricted to CD's and DVD's. Some are on my hard drives.

How do i quickly find all catalogs of removable media that just contain fonts, plus archives on removable media that contain fonts, while excluding archives on hard drives?

WALT9500  Shane, I am really confused about your "really bad interface" remark of CDFinder. CDFinder has an amazing interface, in fact, I personally like it a lot better than the needless eye-candy other apps have.

In your comment for CDFinder, you write "Please, no more pop up windows." Yet DiskCatalogMaker uses the exact same approach to windowing that CDFinder does.

Can pou explain that?

And does DiskCatalogMaker display the actual thumbnails of photos anywhere, outside the needless Cover Flow gimmick or the tiny Get Info window? CDFinder actually does, and it even has an icon view so you can actually use the thumbnails... And lets not start tlaking about the whole metadata abilities...

BOSSKEV  NO, you do NOT need to buy a new license every two years. A license gets you the ability to download and use any UPDATE or UPGRADES they may make to the product over those two years, but you are not prevented from continuing it in the version you "own" past two years, it is most definitely NOT an expiration date.

I've been using PopChar for many, many years as a registered user, paying the fee every 2-3 years. The last time I paid for a license key was in February of 2006 and, when that license key "ended" in February 2008--meaning I could no longer take advantage of any updates/changes to the product--I chose not to renew it, at least not yet. And here's what my PopChar registration box says right now:

"PopChar is registered with the license key above. This license key entitles you for free updates and upgrades until 02/2008." Until I DO update my license key--which will probably be with this release--I have continued to use PopChar freely and properly.

PopChar is, from my perspective, a MUST HAVE utility and, while it is a bit higher priced than I'd like to see--29.99 in Euro currency works out, as you say, to about 38 American dollars--it is a fee I am happy to pay when the updates merit a renewal of that license key.

With that said it will not work with the new CS4 or Quark 8 until they either update it or make the next move to a new version 2. I may have to switch back if an update is not soon.
