EVE Online | May 8 2008 |
SECTION8 not at all, the two may be different, but when mac gamers look for an alternative MMORPG to play and all they know of is WoW, it helps to have a comparison. Having played this game for about 2 months now, i cannot describe the level of relief it gives me that I quit WoW, and EVE Online provides a great alternative to the rampant 13 yr olds and massive time consumption. Not to mention the issue of item escalation that has left raiders in the dust. EVE concentrates more on actual player skill and fleet tactics rather then who has more purplz. (Version 4.12.53162)

SECTION8 This game is the most extensive MMORPG I have ever seen. Its economic aspect has been the subject of numerous WSJ articles and is widely regarded as a completely accurate economic model. The PVP of this game is a lot of fun as well. The universe is extremely expansive as well and the possibilities are endless. This game makes WoW looks like childs-play (this is coming from a former hardcore raider) The current stability of the client is slightly buggy though. I have confidence in CCP that they will iron out all the issues soon, considering they just released an enormous expansion. oh yeah, did i mention all expansions are free?! WOOT :D (Version 4.10.51200)

STAR-AFFINITY Isn't comparing EVE to WoW a bit like comparing apples and oranges? Sure, they're both MMORPG's, but quite different still, no? Why does everything have to be compared all the time. Why choose one thing when one can have all? :) (Version 4.12.53162)

GUILLAUMEK As a former beta tester of EVE Online, I feel you overlooked a few things about EVE which ought to be mentioned. First, it should be said that the learning curve is quite steep. Think Battlecruiser 3000AD.. Also, unlike WoW, this game is a lot less focused on instant fun. The game is slower paced and it takes a long time and a good ship+stats before one can venture in 0.0 and get a taste of PVP, the core of EVE imo. In a nutshell, you can't just drop in a few times a week, play an hour or two, and still have fun. The stats system reduces that problem a bit though. That said, EVE is great if you dig complexity and depth over instant gratification. You just need to be unemployed or something to enjoy it I guess :p (Version 5.10.56866)

STAR-AFFINITY "That said, EVE is great if you dig complexity and depth over instant gratification. You just need to be unemployed or something to enjoy it I guess :p" That's exactly what I feel. I know WoW also requires a lot of time, but I call myself a fairly casual player (with a few monthly "breaks" here and there) and I still think I can enjoy WoW even if I don't have "all purple" gear. It's easy to get into and the battle grounds make it easy for a quick "game in game". I really want to try EVE (and probably will when I think I have time) but still it feels a bit too complicated. But I guess that's also (as people has been sayiing) what makes it good. (Version 5.10.56866)

VALMONTTE This software needs pointed to the "World of Warcraft" Folder, not "World of Warcraft/Interace/Addons" just the base WoW folder. Hope this helps. (Version 1.3)

PETER SICHEL Keyclick is designed to be adjustable and offer a range of feedback options. Personally, I like subtle feedback. Just enough to confirm the computer received my input, whether typing, scrolling, or two finger scrolling on a laptop. When an application doesn't respond immediately or the way I expected, it's comforting to know the computer received my input, or I didn't generate the gesture I thought. It seems some people love it, others are indifferent, and some have no use for it. It's not a one size fits all kind of thing.

CSEAN2006 I learned to type ages ago on a manual typewriter (do they still exist?) and have always liked the clickety-clack, though that's just me. I know it could be annoying to others. Trying to imagine our highschool typing teacher, with 30 ninth graders henpecking away for 30 minutes, multiplied by 6 or 7 classes a day. Anyway, on my powerbooks I used to have TappyType installed and liked it. But apart from liking it, I found it helped my typing speed and accuracy. Seems there have been studies, too, that demonstrate this: i.e., the typewriter sounds trick computer keyboard users into thinking they're getting that tactile feedback, sort of like a recoil effect, from the non-tactile, non-recoiling computer keyboard keys. To each his own, of course. I've tried Keyclick and found it to be the current equivalent of Tappy Type. I like it. Helps my typing too. (Version 1.1.6)

SECTION8 The lack of inclusion of the GSM codec is extremely short-sighted of the developer and alienates mac users from a large number of vent servers. To release a client that has an off-chance of being completely incompatible with a server is just bad practice. If you visit their forums, the thread regarding this issue is locked, and what more, the last pertinent post was posted in 2005. Its now 2007. GET A CLUE VENTRILO. Also, your audio settings do occasionally get erased. (Version 2.3.2pr15)

SECTION8 i love this game. it just needs to have some of the complexity of EV Nova, then it would be amazing. Now, i know thats probably the plan for the future, but even as is, this game is very fun to play for some reason :p Anyways, i found a bunch of bugs. • Crashes constantly for unknown reasons • Music does not loop once its done playing its track. (good music, btw) • Turret tracking system is close to useless because it lags behind moving targets just slightly so in order for them to be effective at all you have to be right behind your target. • FPS jumping from 200 to 0 every 5 seconds. • Even if a turret is shooting at a target right in front of you, sometimes it will miss constantly because it is shooting at the target brackets but it is not hitting the actual target all these combined makes the game almost unplayable, which is really unfortunate because this is an awesome idea. its what Ambrosia missed out on. SECTION8 X3 tended to act terribly on 10.3 but now using X4 on 10.4 there have been to kernel panics and it works flawlessly. Personally, i think it a very great piece of software. Although, you DO have to know what your doing, otherwise it can be a tad confusing... that being said, its not work $70... (Version 10.4.1)

DP-G4-450GUY Ok, NetBarrier X3 worked FLAWLESSLY on Panther ..... if you, as an individual, were having problems, you had some sort of corruption on your machine. Kernel panics are usually the #1 clue to this effect - NOT "bad RAM" that gets quoted so often by the shoot-from-the-hipsters. We've run NetB on a 500 seat, no issues whatsoever. The price tag value is totally subjective - on a LAN or a particular individual's setup, it can be worth every penny. (Version 10.4.1)

SECTION8 this is not the software for you then. This is firewall software, not something to catch all outgoing connections. What you are looking for is LittleSnith. (Version 10.4.1)

SECTION8 I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!! This is by far the best space combat flight sim ever created! you can switch the resolution and color depth by going into ~/Library/FS2_Open/fs2_open.ini you open with text edit. Switch the 640x480 to 1024x768 and the 16 to a 32 and then save the file. make sure you didn not add any spaces or anything. Now Freespace2 is running @ 1024x768 and millions of colors. It looks amazing! (Version 2.0)
