“Fixed Da[y]light Saving Time display problems.” Some of us have been complaining directly to the project author(s) about this problem for *years* !!!! Let’s hope it is _really_ fixed, soon enough for the “fall back” coming this weekend. ;) (Version 0.72)

SCIFI It seems the author has fixed the problems mentioned below with v2.2.2 available at his website. Hoping he will come back here to fix the links as well. ;) (Version 2.2)

NOTAFOOL Sorry, but the newer version is just as bad the previous one. It simply does NOT - repeat NOT - launch on my computer, (Details of my computer and OS are in my first posting). This is extremely disappointing. Quite frankly, I no longer have ANY confidence in this application at all and shall NOT be trying it again. It appears to have been quite inadequately tested on the VERY machines that it purports to have been written for, and is bug-ridden. It has been released far too prematurely and simply does NOT work. BEWARE !! (Version 2.2)

NOTAFOOL This latest version - purporting to have been released today (21 April 2009) - is no better than any of the previous version I have tried. It still totally refuses to launch or do anything whatsoever. It remains a total LEMON as far as I am concerned. I have had quite a bit of correspondence with the Developer and have sent him crash reports, logs etc. So far he has no idea why it doesn't work for me. But it certainly doesn't. And check out his website. Many, many people are having all sorts of problems with it. It is simply NO good. (Version 2.2.2)

Drag smcFanControl to the Dock manually. Then when you have it on your Dock, right-click (or control-click) the icon and select "Open At Login" and then restart the computer. It wasn't launching at startup for me either until I did this manually. See if it works for you. (Version 2.2.2)

NOTAFOOL I did exactly as you recommended STOOPID MONK3Y. Absolutely NO difference whatsoever. The dopey application STILL totally refuses to launch. NOTHIng. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Not even the remotest hint that it is launching. I have given up on this dopey application now. It is a total LEMON as far as I am concerned. I have had correspondence with the Developer, who appears to have absolutely no idea why it will not launch even though I have sent him crash reports etc. I have now trashed this irritating application and intend having NOTHING to do with it. It appears to have more bugs in it than an entomologist's laboratory. (Version 2.2.2)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y Dude, it's working perfectly for me and thousands of others. Don't know what the issue is and I wish I could tell you, but there must be something funky in your system from preventing the launch of this app. If even the developer can't help you, I don't think anyone else can. Maybe wait for a newer release or just ditch the program altogether. The updates seem to be far and few between though so you might be waiting a while. (Version 2.2.2)

smcFanControl | Apr 27 2009 |
M. LUTHER Works fine for me. And if a stoopid monkey can get it working, then its gotta be something funky with your system. (Version 2.2.2)

smcFanControl | Apr 29 2009 |
NOTAFOOL Every other application on my computer works absolutely fine. I have run both Disk Warrior and Drive Genius over it and both give it a 100% clean bill of health. If my computer is, in fact, "funky", then how come that doesn't show up in any way at all except with THIS particular application ? Never mind. I am quite content to do without SMCfancontrol. It's not such a big deal. But I'm certainly surprised that the Developer cannot offer any suggestions as to why it refuses to work on my computer, even though I have sent him Crash and Log reports. TERMINALMAN Note that this is advertised as "officially supporting" Intel-based laptops only. The iMac seems not yet officially supported, which could account for your difficulties. There were a number of different Intel iMac versions released (three as of May 2009, I believe) and Apple likely changed the fan control interface with each version just as they seem to have done with the new laptop versions. It is likely that the author does not have access to all of the Intel iMac variations, so complaining IN CAPS that it does not work for you is a bit over the top IMO. Particularly for freeware/donationware. This is a useful app, works perfectly on three (different) Intel Mac laptops in my family, and will hopefully soon support all the different "respins" of the Intel iMac. Honestly, software is not so trivial to write when the interfaces you're using "evolves" over time. Been there, done that, got the grey hair to prove it. (Version 2.2.2)

AVIDMCUSER @NOTAFOOL - After attempting to launch the application, did you look in your menu bar? I know you are not a fool but it 'is' the only indication after launch that in fact it has launched and the settings can be configured through the menu bar only as far as I know. The preference window is then launched where you can configure it. --just in case you missed it. (Version 2.2.2)

SCIFI I do not see any indication whether or not Google is ignoring support for Tiger users. You must know many Mac users are not (yet if ever) able to "upgrade" to Leopard for wide-range of reasons. Please do not forsake us. It won't be difficult to support Tiger if you go-ahead at this early stage, rather than buck-slipping code at a later stage. (Version 0.3)

SCIFI To MacUpdateAdminGuys&Gals and to these Developers, You–all seem to be missing the point. We Tiger users need a *current* version of these apps, not a moldy *previous* version. ;) I guess I’ll try building from the source tarballs but note it isn’t for the faint–of–heart (that’s what MacPorts users will end–up doing as well). Also note this project in particular looks like it’ll require X11 and all sorts of other non–Mac GUI stuff e.g. GNome, most of which I have already installed locally here as shared libs — thus my build probably won’t be a self–contained one with static libs and I wouldn’t be able to distribute my build for others to use this way — but that’s the way Things Ought To Be™ on a true–blue *ix system for a whole gaggle of technical reasons, most importantly the moldy pre-packaged previous versions will undoubtedly be using old code from the same dependent projects as well. Y’see how Leopard–only developers are ABUSING the open–source traditions here? Do y’all see that??? Yes indeed even Apple have gotten off–track in this regard also — their “promise” of being “more Linux–friendly” is long–long–long gone IMO. This website is going to need a new filter that lists only the apps that are known to be Jaguar–, Panther–, Tiger–compatible vis–à–vis Leopard–only etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. And appropriate options be placed on the Developers “Add A File” panel as Required items before posting the app made publicly available. …ok I had my spiel, bring on the flamewars… (Version 2.20.3)

SCIFI … and I am unable to use this app because it is Leopard–only. C’mon developers, stop leaving us out in the cold like this. It is not our fault we cannot use Leopard — blame Apple for that decision (mostly). (Version 0.5.21)

Voluminous | Sep 4 2008 |
One important point is being missed: I for one cannot use Voluminous. Tiger users and earlier are apparently being ignored. Don't blame me, blame Apple for their Leopard problems and restrictions. Project Gutenberg as-is works on almost *any* system! AFAICT there is no reason to shut us out like this. Please stop doing that, all you Leopard-only developers! (Version 1.0.6)

SCIFI That’s a typical remark we get when we make a simple request to not leave Tiger/Panther/PPC/etc. support behind on any open source project. It is understood that we may join a project and/or donate to it, goes without saying. If a team already involved does not know how popular Tiger/PPC/etc. still are and the reasons we cannot “upgrade” to Leopard/later and/or switch to (“buy”) an Intel machine, then we have the obligation to let the teams know. But there are more direct ways to let them know besides using MacUpdate as a sounding board, we should be using them also (e.g. file bugreports & such). Thank you. (Version 0.5b2)

SCIFI There is no reason I can fathom for not supporting earlier OSX systems as in previous releases of your app. There are many reasons why some of us cannot "upgrade" to Leopard yet if at all. Stop relegating your products like this. Thank you. (Version 0.60)

DAVID GRANT I agree. I've had to stick with an older version because I haven't upgraded to Leopard. Not a happy camper. (Version 0.62)

MacProgramGuide | Sep 22 2008 |
CHAS_M Don't assume the developer has malicious intent in excluding older OSes. Sometimes, the tools used to compile the code force older versions to be excluded, sometimes the features leveraged from the OS (like Core Animation) *require* that you make something Leopard-only (as the feature doesn't exist in Tiger!). By all means, petition the developer for support of recent OS versions -- just don't always assume its an oversight, or in their power to fix. (Version 0.63)

MacProgramGuide | Sep 23 2008 |
DAVID GRANT I wasn't suggesting malice on the part of the developer, only that he may not have fully realized how many of his users have not upgraded to 10.5. I would like to be able to take advantage of the new features w/o having to upgrade to 10.5. I'm not a developer myself, so my comments are thus necessarily somewhat uninformed, but I don't see what Leopard-specific features an essentially text-based program like MacProgramGuide _must_ use. (Version 0.63)

SCIFI Ditto. Many of us cannot move away from Tiger for various reasons. If XBMC is based on open source projects, there is no reason to relegate your app in this manner. Thank you. (Version 0.5b2)
