ADAM PREBLE  I recently joined Jungle Disk as the resident card-carrying Mac guy and while I believe we've made some great strides with the now-in-beta version 2.0, there is still a lot of room for improvement to make Jungle Disk feel as 'Mac-like' as possible. One of these ways is, as you point out, to provide an app that lives in System Preferences, or the menu bar, rather than the Dock. At the moment we're concentrating on adding features and keeping the application rock solid, but rest assured that we strongly value the Mac experience and will be making more and more improvements in that area.

SCHMELDING  Actually, this version isn't bug-free. When enabled, websites continually "load" -- the spinner keeps going even when the site appears to be fully loaded.

Also, it stops the Safari Tidy plugin from loading.

When I disable Safari AdBlock the Tidy plugin works, and sites load normally.

The last version was error-free for me.

I'm sure some preferences will be added, but it really doesn't need hardly any. One thing as a personal preference: I'm not a big fan of semi-transparent windows. I would rather have the option to make the window 100% opaque, but that's just me.

SCHMELDING  It's got awesome potential and definitely meets a need.

The downside, as of this writing, is because the software "hijacks" the mac.com domain name, you won't be able to access or download from someone else using the "real" dot.mac service. Maybe that could be fixed in a future release?

Otherwise, this is a great solution for anyone who wants what .mac offers without the price.

JOBBY  This is definitely a problem — the Tubetrack widget relies on being able to connect to mac.com in order to get the list of stations, and hasn't worked since I installed notMac.

Ideally it should pass all .mac requests (other than for the username I've configured) on to the REAL .mac.

Incidentally, the upgrade script doesn't really make it clear whether or not I'm supposed to manually disable notMac (and how I'm supposed to do that!) or whether the script is going to do it for me.

DAMIEN.BARRETT  You don't manage many computers, it seems.

Microsoft probably used an installer so that it requires a user to know a computer's admin password before installation can continue, which is NOT true of a drag-and-drop installation. And with something like an RDC access application, this is probably a good idea.

At least they're using Apple's Installer framework and not something like Vise. If you're really worried about what's being installed, you can use Pacifist to look inside the installer and see what's installed where. This is not true of Vise installer packages.

DONMONTALVO  I'm not sure I agree with your "You don't manage many computers" comment. Self contained applications are best practice wherever possible. If you don't want RDC used in your environment, simply block that traffic at the network level.

CoRD is a FREE alternative that works fine off the user's Desktop. There's simply no need for an installer where a drag install works.

If you have use for Plone "as-is -- out of the box", then it's a fine product. But, like most people, you need to customize it to match your brand, change the look, or any other customization, it stinks.

Jan 30 2007

GREGWELCH  (from the developer)

This sounds like it could be a known issue, which is addressed on the plugin page. Please make sure the "Number of Recent Items" setting for Documents in the Appearance panel of the OS X System Preferences is NOT set to "None." It should be set to 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, or 50. Otherwise normal copys and moves will not function properly. (Setting it to "None" does not make sense if you are going to use the plugin, but it should not break moves/copies. This will be fixed in the next release.)

I hope this fixes your problem. If not, and you still want to use the plugin, please contact me directly (welch@cs.unc.edu) so I can look into it with you.

CallWave Virtual Voicemail
Jan 30 2007

BRAMR  This is from the Learn More section (available from the registration screen on the widget):

What are activation codes?

Dialing the activation code allows your phone to send unanswered calls to CallWave (so we can display a copy of your messages in your widget).

If you are not completely satisfied with CallWave, you can always go back to your old cell phone voicemail by dialing the deactivation code.

How does it work?

If somebody calls you on your cell phone, and you don't answer, the call forwards to CallWave. CallWave records the message and shows it in your widget.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Well considering that it moves everything to the trash and you have to empty the trash in order to remove the apps, it would be completely your own fault for having to reinstall your OS. Try thinking and observing the situation before giving an app one star because of your own mishaps. You could've very well moved the apps back because AppZapper moves them to the trash. It does not delete everything permanently. This is so in case you do something drastic, you can undo the changes.

SCHMELDING  So, Microsoft is in violation because they have a word processor similar WordPerfect?

Maybe Lotus should sue Microsoft because Excel is a spreadsheet app just like Lotus 123 was?

Should Ford sue Toyota because they make cars too?

I think the Wright Brothers descendants should sue all airplane makers today because they are using the same basic ideas for their airplanes that the Wright Bros. used.

Seriously, it becomes a violation if the uApp interface or icon or underlying code is identical to AppZapper's. Otherwise, there's nothing unique enough about this type of application that warrants raising a red flag.

I can buy a car and sell it to someone else, but if I build from scratch piece-for-piece an identical car, including logos and detailing, as a Ferrari (for example), THEN I'm in violation of copyright law. But I can build a car of my own design from scratch legally anytime I want.

***½.

SCHMELDING  Great app, but there are too many quirky things at this point. I realize it's not a full version, but here goes nuthin':

1. Saves .config file to Desktop instead of ~/Preferences.

2. Doesn't remember settings between launches.

3. Too many dialogs. "Have fun"?!? The app doesn't need dialogs -- the buttons already show you the state of the app.

4. Needs better instructions (but then again, so does Synergy).

5. Something that launches you last saved config on login.

However, the app does have a nice interface and not bogged down with too many useless features or other bloat. It's useful, but I'll send my money if the other things get added.

SCHMELDING  I love this widget, but I have two beefs (or beeves?):

1. It's enough to have the widget open Mail onclick, but it's too much to tell it to check mail also. When the osascript tells Mail to "check for new mail" it checks all accounts. Some folks (like me) have "send only" accounts in Mail. I "hacked" my MailWidget and removed line 302 and it worked great.

2. What is with the sounds? Can we get a choice? The included ones were too noisy. I hac -- ahem -- changed mine to be the simple "Ping" sound. Short and sweet.

SCHMELDING  This is definitely the best CVS Mac client I've seen so far, but it has a long way to go. Although it depends on Java like Eclipse, it has a much smaller footprint than Eclipse. But it still has some serious issues:

1. Java. It's still too slow. Develop this in Cocoa and then I'll send you my $70. I'll throw in a hug, too.

2. The interface is better than other Mac CVS clients, but it is still too cumbersome and unintuitive.

3. Price. Others are free. This is $69 for the full "Pro" version when all other clients offer a free full versions. I'm not saying make it free, but the price point ought to be considerably less. I would pay $20, but not %70.

SCHMELDING  iWould like to see the developer come up with a whole new name. iMean this very kindly, because iThink this app is awesome, but whole "i" app name has been beat to death. It's okay for Apple, but otherwise, drop the "i."

How something more kitschy like, "Convert-o-matic" or something like "FileGrinder" or "File Regurgitator" or something else? The name "iFille" doesn't mean anything to me, except remind me of a Philly cheesesteak. Mmm...cheesesteak.

SCHMELDING  This is a very nice app, but two things will make it an awesome app and earn a total 5-star rating:

1. An import/export feature. I don't want to enter all of my password data from Pastor or SecretBook again. And I'd like to generate a list of password to share with a sysadmin (hence, export).

2. Fix the non-sequential, jumping tab issue. Hitting the tab key doesn't make the next field highlight, but highlights something else unexpectedly.

Keep up the great work!

SCHMELDING  Overall, I think this app rawks. Generally, the interface could be tightened up and made to be more iTunes-like. I didn't get the "Enter a song name, etc." field at first. Why not simply call it "search" or something similar? That whole bottom area could be better refined from a UI standpoint.

Some nifty feature requests:

A BIG, nice addition would be the introduction of some standard keystrokes (spacebar = pause/play, arrow keys to control volume and track skipping, etc.).

Random and Repeat buttons would be cool too.

Like I said above, this rawks. It replaces "Remote Remote" for this task, I love the Growl notification, and I think you're on the right track (so to speak). Awesome!

MATT PAT  Glad you like it :D

You're not the only person who has been pestering me for the space bar for play/pause. Volume controls are Command+Up and Command+Down. I'm going to try to have that in v0.9.

Following your suggestion, the placeholder text for the box will be changed to "Search (Title, Artist, Album)" (I left Title, Artist, and Album in there so users know what they can search for). I think I'm also going to add a search box to the track browser.

Speaking of the track browser, it's now 4x faster in v0.9! You'll notice a big difference.

Thanks for the review!

SCHMELDING  I like where it's going, but for Trek "Purists" it's not quite right. The fonts should be in the "Swiss" or at the very least "Helvetica" family. Since developers can embed and use fonts within Widgets, I recommend to the developer finding the "Swiss 911" typeface. That was the official display font used on the show and work well for the Calendar heading. For the sake of usability, Helvetica should be used for the calendar day dates.

Just a thought -- take it or leave it. But please don't misunderstand -- I totally dig this widget.

SCHMELDING  The widget is just a tad bloated because the author decided to keep the source Photoshop PSDs in the widget instead of removing them before packaging. Also, I don't care for the "Hi there sexy! What would you like me to say?" greeting when it starts up. I can change things like that myself, but for the uninitiated it would be nice to have a couple of config choices so the user can decide to listen to that or not.

Other than those things, this is a very handy widget. 4 stars.

ANDRE WEINAND  1. It is native Mac Carbon app (like PhotoShop or MS Word).

2. CVS does handle special Mac characters (but you have to understand how CVS works). If a CVS running on local Mac is used, you'll have to set the CVS encoding for filenames to UTF-8 (use properties dialog on CVS connection). For the file content, CVS makes no assumptions about the encoding. So if you are using a CVS on a different platform, you'll have to tell Eclipse on Mac what the encoding of files in CVS is.
