ADAM PREBLE I recently joined Jungle Disk as the resident card-carrying Mac guy and while I believe we've made some great strides with the now-in-beta version 2.0, there is still a lot of room for improvement to make Jungle Disk feel as 'Mac-like' as possible. One of these ways is, as you point out, to provide an app that lives in System Preferences, or the menu bar, rather than the Dock. At the moment we're concentrating on adding features and keeping the application rock solid, but rest assured that we strongly value the Mac experience and will be making more and more improvements in that area. SCHMELDING It's got awesome potential and definitely meets a need. The downside, as of this writing, is because the software "hijacks" the mac.com domain name, you won't be able to access or download from someone else using the "real" dot.mac service. DAMIEN.BARRETT You don't manage many computers, it seems. Microsoft probably used an installer so that it requires a user to know a computer's admin password before installation can continue, which is NOT true of a drag-and-drop installation. And with something like an RDC access application, this is probably a good idea. At least they're using Apple's Installer framework and not something like Vise. If you're really worried about what's being installed, you can use Pacifist to look inside the installer and see what's installed where. This is not true of Vise installer packages. (Version 2.0b1)

Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection | Jul 31 2007 |
DONMONTALVO I'm not sure I agree with your "You don't manage many computers" comment. Self contained applications are best practice wherever possible. If you don't want RDC used in your environment, simply block that traffic at the network level. CoRD is a FREE alternative that works fine off the user's Desktop. There's simply no need for an installer where a drag install works. (who manages many Macs) (Version 2.0b1)

Dialing the activation code allows your phone to send unanswered calls to CallWave (so we can display a copy of your messages in your widget). If you are not completely satisfied with CallWave, you can always go back to your old cell phone voicemail by dialing the deactivation code. ST00P!D M0NK3Y Well considering that it moves everything to the trash and you have to empty the trash in order to remove the apps, it would be completely your own fault for having to reinstall your OS. Try thinking and observing the situation before giving an app one star because of your own mishaps. You could've very well moved the apps back because AppZapper moves them to the trash. It does not delete everything permanently. This is so in case you do something drastic, you can undo the changes. (Version 1.8)

SCHMELDING So, Microsoft is in violation because they have a word processor similar WordPerfect? Maybe Lotus should sue Microsoft because Excel is a spreadsheet app just like Lotus 123 was? Should Ford sue Toyota because they make cars too? I think the Wright Brothers descendants should sue all airplane makers today because they are using the same basic ideas for their airplanes that the Wright Bros. used. Seriously, it becomes a violation if the uApp interface or icon or underlying code is identical to AppZapper's. Otherwise, there's nothing unique enough about this type of application that warrants raising a red flag. I can buy a car and sell it to someone else, but if I build from scratch piece-for-piece an identical car, including logos and detailing, as a Ferrari (for example), THEN I'm in violation of copyright law. But I can build a car of my own design from scratch legally anytime I want. (Version 1.0)

IINDIGO Because even though you can turn those features off, the bloat/clutter from them even being present is still there. On top of that, there are a few options that surfDude offers that Safari doesnt, and if you actually read the description, it uses fully native widgets (buttons etc.) that allow system themes to work even if the theme's creator didn't add buttons for it. It also happens to be my hobby/side project. I saw no harm in releasing it to the public, and people seem to like it, so... (Version 0.4)

SCHMELDING Great app, but there are too many quirky things at this point. I realize it's not a full version, but here goes nuthin': 1. Saves .config file to Desktop instead of ~/Preferences. 2. Doesn't remember settings between launches. 3. Too many dialogs. "Have fun"?!? The app doesn't need dialogs -- the buttons already show you the state of the app. 4. Needs better instructions (but then again, so does Synergy). 5. Something that launches you last saved config on login. However, the app does have a nice interface and not bogged down with too many useless features or other bloat. It's useful, but I'll send my money if the other things get added. (Version 0.6)

MailWidget | May 4 2006 |
SCHMELDING I love this widget, but I have two beefs (or beeves?): 1. It's enough to have the widget open Mail onclick, but it's too much to tell it to check mail also. When the osascript tells Mail to "check for new mail" it checks all accounts. Some folks (like me) have "send only" accounts in Mail. I "hacked" my MailWidget and removed line 302 and it worked great. 2. What is with the sounds? Can we get a choice? The included ones were too noisy. I hac -- ahem -- changed mine to be the simple "Ping" sound. Short and sweet. All-in-all though, it is one of my favorite widgets. Thanks! (Version 1.41)

SCHMELDING This is definitely the best CVS Mac client I've seen so far, but it has a long way to go. Although it depends on Java like Eclipse, it has a much smaller footprint than Eclipse. But it still has some serious issues: 1. Java. It's still too slow. Develop this in Cocoa and then I'll send you my $70. I'll throw in a hug, too. 2. The interface is better than other Mac CVS clients, but it is still too cumbersome and unintuitive. 3. Price. Others are free. This is $69 for the full "Pro" version when all other clients offer a free full versions. I'm not saying make it free, but the price point ought to be considerably less. I would pay $20, but not %70. SCHMELDING Overall, I think this app rawks. Generally, the interface could be tightened up and made to be more iTunes-like. I didn't get the "Enter a song name, etc." field at first. Why not simply call it "search" or something similar? That whole bottom area could be better refined from a UI standpoint. Some nifty feature requests: A BIG, nice addition would be the introduction of some standard keystrokes (spacebar = pause/play, arrow keys to control volume and track skipping, etc.). Random and Repeat buttons would be cool too. Like I said above, this rawks. It replaces "Remote Remote" for this task, I love the Growl notification, and I think you're on the right track (so to speak). Awesome! (Version 0.8)

Following your suggestion, the placeholder text for the box will be changed to "Search (Title, Artist, Album)" (I left Title, Artist, and Album in there so users know what they can search for). I think I'm also going to add a search box to the track browser. Speaking of the track browser, it's now 4x faster in v0.9! You'll notice a big difference. Thanks for the review! (Version 0.8)

SCHMELDING I like where it's going, but for Trek "Purists" it's not quite right. The fonts should be in the "Swiss" or at the very least "Helvetica" family. Since developers can embed and use fonts within Widgets, I recommend to the developer finding the "Swiss 911" typeface. That was the official display font used on the show and work well for the Calendar heading. For the sake of usability, Helvetica should be used for the calendar day dates. ANDRE WEINAND 1. It is native Mac Carbon app (like PhotoShop or MS Word). 2. CVS does handle special Mac characters (but you have to understand how CVS works). If a CVS running on local Mac is used, you'll have to set the CVS encoding for filenames to UTF-8 (use properties dialog on CVS connection). For the file content, CVS makes no assumptions about the encoding. So if you are using a CVS on a different platform, you'll have to tell Eclipse on Mac what the encoding of files in CVS is. 3.
