NTFS Mounter

****.

ROOSTER  OMG! This works...perfect! a big, big, THANKS.

Sits in the menu bar waiting for read-only NTFS volumes, and bang...all you have to do is select the volume form the list and its automatically unmount and remounted read/write. Seem pretty stable, efficient, handy, etc., and all the other positive buzzwords. This has earned a place in my crowded menu bar. All it needs is a better Finder icon as well as a better Menu bar icon ;-)

I hope to have some time to do some controlled performance testing to determine what the average I/O rates are as compared to HFS as well as the Paragon and the NTFS-3G. I encourage others to share their performance metrics.

Anyway, as with any 3rd party development (free or paid) use at your own risk. Your data is your data...you have to assume the responsibility for what you install and use on your computers over and above what Apple provides. If its a paid-for and a warranted product then sure, the vendor has a service level they should address if you encounter problems that their product caused (ie data loss). But a product that someone develops (and probably uses for themselves) and then shares with others is just plain kind and in the spirit of open development...blah...blah...blah. I provided criticism to this dev in my 1st post and it was constructive and I hope it helped the dev put out a better solution. I encourage others to provide constructive comments not trash talk ;-)

Well thanks again and BTW...I'm kicking my rating up a notch.

Cheers!

NTFS Mounter

***..

ROOSTER  First of all a bit of praise and a thankyou for this app and the effort. Things I like are:

- That it is a menu item that is out of the way, out of the dock, and easily accessible

- I really like the ability to access NTFS and read/write.

- The simple interface is welcome

What is troubling though is that it is awkward to use based on the following descriptiopn (I could just be doing it wrong but this is the problem):

- With NTFS Mounter running, the first time you mount an NTFS volume, the volume is read only but shows up in the NTFS Mounter list of available volumes...OK

- When the NTFS volume is selected, an NTFS Mounter Error instructs that you must eject/unmount/eject the volume...OK

- When the NTFS volume is unmount/ejected in the Finder as instructed above it is no longer available to NTFS Mounter...not good...The act of unmount/eject basically removes it from the bus that it was plugged into (USB/FireWire) and it can no longer be seen by NTFS Mounter

- Remedy: by this point the external NTFS drive is no longer visible on the desktop (unmounted) nor connected (ejected) on the bus. I unplugged and plugged it back in and it mounts as before in read only mode but instead of unmount/eject in the Finder I used Disk Utility to unmount (only...not eject) at this point it is visible to NTFS Mounter to mount it in the Finder as read/write.

- Cumbersome but it works

The next thoughts I had were around performance. I found that older NTFS drivers had poor read/write performance as compared to using HFS on the Mac or NTFS in Windows. I found that NTFS-3G performance was not as good. And I also tried the retail Paragon NTFS driver which was comparable to native speeds but of course it was a little bit more expensive than free :-) It would be interesting to see what other peoples experience performance wise is with this implementation.

Thanks for the tool.

FABIEN JAKIMOWICZ  I am actually working on the unmount/eject trouble.

I should be able to release another version with this solved and without having to manually unmount/eject the volume before mounting it.

DANCO  So if one wanted to stop using it, it's just a matter of deleting the application? It doesn't install any kexts or the like that have to be deleted.

I'm asking because I have the Paragon NTFS. This is currently not Snow Leopard compatible, though there are compatible betas.

So I might want to use this and then switch to Paragon. Or maybe this will turn out better than Paragon.

ROOSTER  This is a good example of a simple, easy to use, and very handy software add-on for your Mac. If you have multiple cameras and use different image applications this is a very good utility to have to help you specify what you want to happen when you plug a camera in. I have a DSLR, point-and-shoot, and an iPhone and use different applications depending on which device I am pulling pictures from. I find this software does the trick. It is stable, doesn't get in the way or interfere with other things and has become indispensable for me.

My experience leads me to agree with a few other comments from people "where is the donate button". I really, really appreciate that it is free but after using it for a while now I have concluded that it is worth something. It has value and adds unfettered capability to my Mac so I think that I wouldn't mind throwing the developer a few bucks incentive to keep it current. The' freeness' reminds me of another utility called FinderPop which I found very useful. The developer wasn't looking to make money so it was PintWare...you could send him enough for a pint if you like...so I bought him a Beamish.

Anyway, this is a good addition to my Mac and I would hit that donate button for a couple of bucks.

ROOSTER  My iPhone and DSLR show up and it works great for both, but I also had two other unknown entries in the list which puzzled me but didn't cause any problems...they were just annoying me. I didn't see any visible way to remove the entries but I found that if you select an item in the list and press the delete key it removes them.

ROOSTER  Why is this categorized on MacUpdate as FREE when it's not. If the free offer was in October then it makes sense., but this is not October.

Anyway, I have never been able to get much to run with this software. Sure some of the most common things work but only with little quirks and stability issues. I have had better luck using opensource or other native 3rd part Mac apps to replicate desired Windows only applications.

I'm not really nocking this system because I really like the idea but I just wish it worked better.

ROOSTER  If I understand this correctly this is just a menu bar overflow utility. So if I'm running a MacBook Pro 17 and a 26-inch monitor both at a high resolution then this will not be of much use unless i have a ridiculous amount of menu items added. I like the idea and it make sense on my partner's MacBook Pro 15 but she doesn't have much in the way of menu items added but maybe with this little utility she will start :-) The price is right and it has some function so we should not complain too much LOL.

GCOGHILL  For MacBook users with lots of menu items, this looks like it might be handy. Some time the app menus hide the left-most items.

CoolIris

ROOSTER  I used this when it was called PicLens on the PC. I really liked it and never had any problems with it. Along with their other product CoolPreviews it was great. I tried them both out in FireFox on a couple of my Macs and found them to be OK but I really wanted to use Safari and development/stability seemed to be a bit off in Safari. The last version of CoolIris (aka PicLens) was right on in Safari...it beat the heck out of browsing through pages of Google thumbnails looking for pictures and having to wait for another page to load and have a look at the picture. This is a great add-on to any browser and OS combo. it could use a little more user control/configuration but the concept is solid and a real improvement from an end-ser experience perspective. I have read of few of the other comments and I agree that i don't like the fact that it relies on input managers...for Safari...but is that the fault of the developer or the lack of an integrated plugin system in Safari to allow for feature expansion? I don't know! I think it fairly good and petty stable. blah...blah...blah :-)

ROOSTER  I agree that this should come in an installer package instead of a download applet that doesn't give you a clue as to where things are going to be put and what it's going to do to your system.

It took me several tries and I kept getting errors similar to the ones posted earlier. Eventually it installed for no apparent reason...I hadn't done anything different other than double-click and cross my fingers.

On a positive note...I really like the idea of having this type of control in the GUI. This developer has a good idea and I hope to see further developments.

Please consider a standalone packages installer for the distribution and deployment of this solution. Also consider making this a single Preference Pane which i my opinion is where control panel like stuff belongs.

Thanks for the effort and a great idea!

NTFS-3G
Sep 20 2008

ROOSTER  It takes a long time to copy files in all the versions. About twice as long for large monolithic files and even more time if its a folder with lots of smaller files. Its probably because this is an implementation of an older NT version. The current NTFS 6 version is a pretty good with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a modern file system (to bad WinFS), but I doubt the NTFS-3G dev could get to that NTFS 6 level without grief from M$. Anyway, The site is not informative enough and says it allows you to use 4G+ USB sticks. Big deal...FAT32 will do it and you will get decent performance. The issue is really,,,really large files...say you want to save a big 7GB ISO of a movie/game/etc....You need Apple's HFS or you have to use NTFS...If you go the NTFS route be prepared for long file transfer times and some occasional stability issues. For me it is worth it because I have several external FW and USB drives that contain common data and must be accessed from both Mac and Win depending on the situation. I like the idea of this driver but there are some pitfalls...be prepared to accept lower speed and occasional weirdness.

PocketMac Pro

DAROOSTER  Yup! I too have had a good experience with this product. I tried MissingSync and PockMac 2 way back and decided that PocketMac was the lesser of two evils. I have a PB G4 17inch and a Palm Tungsten T3 which I don't like so I bought an iPaq 1340...wow what a cool little device. Now to make it play with my Mac. After some trial and error with both apps i found that both provided the same amounts of headaches but the PacketMac had way better feature set and interface...for me. I pretty much figured out everything on my own except for email. I contacted support and they responed promptly.

DAROOSTER  This rocks... it is exactly what I have been waiting for. I was a FinderPop user under Mac OS 9 and found that I missed the functionality of the so called "pintware) as the developer called it :-)

With this context menu item I can do things far more efficiently than with Apple's standard navigation features. In fact, I have hidden all my desktop volumes and the Dock... now I just use Ittec to go where ever and do whatever I need. Add to it customisable command like Copy To and Move To with a target area dialogue box and this will be a 5 start tool.

DAROOSTER  This little menu bar item rocks. I am not fond of all the menu bar items that have been cropping up lately, but this gets its place on my menu. There seems to be this epidemic of stuff out now for the menu bar, but developers don't realise that the menu bar is finite and has to compete with application menu items.

Anyway, this one gets my thumbs up :-) The only thing I found lacking was in features like more advanced preferences.
