JAZZICA I agree about spelling errors in descriptions, on web sites, and even in the apps themselves. It seems like one wrong letter, space, dash, or other character could really mess up a Unix machine. And spell-checks won't work with code. It makes me wonder about the negative results of some users of this version (3.3). (Version 3.3)

RONL First off... this is a great app! Unfortunately version 5.9.5 broke the ability to scroll the layers of a Dock. SuperDuper! | Oct 13 2009 |
RONL This is worth repeating... For many years I had used Retrospect. But then metadata was not being properly duped and after having to actually use a backup because of a major problem... modification and creation dates, etc. were listed as the day I had to do the backup. I am talking about thousands of files and folders that I could no longer search via dates! So when it came time to upgrade Retrospect I started searched for other backup software that would be more reliable. I came across this URL comparing various backup software (if you do not read the entire article, since it is very detailed, at least read the conclusion... "The only laudable exception is the great SuperDuper application, which performs flawlessly.") http://blog.plasticsfuture.org/2006/04/23/mac-backup-software-harmful/ Using SuperDuper! has been great and the price is incredible. The only 'advantage' that I had 'enjoyed' with Retrospect was its rather simple way of coping only specific folders/files by checking boxes... but that was not nearly enough to continue using it and losing so much of important meta data which was necessary for searches, etc. AND SuperDuper! can do something similar though it takes a couple more steps. I highly recommend it... and their tech support actually gets back to you very quickly when you have a question (unlike Dantz). (Version 2.6.2)

COMMERCIAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT My primary difficulty with Retrospect was that they compressed the data in a proprietary format and the overall process seemed a bit awkward overall to me. I followed the blog linked by the prior reviewer and zeroed in on Carbon Copy Cloner as I am presently using this. That writer said "doesn't preserve . . . creation date, HFS+ extended attributes," "not recommended" Then I checked the Bombich software site FAQ and they state under the question "CCC requires an HFS+ formatted target volume": "The HFS+ filesystem defines many types of metadata that describe non-data attributes of your files. Creation date, access control lists, permissions and ownership, Finder flags, and extended attributes are among the various metadata types defined in the HFS+ standard. To adequately back up all of your files and their associated metadata, CCC requires that your backup volume is also formatted as HFS+." I back up daily to an OWC supplied Firewire 800 external drive, and weekly to the same drive offsite, plus using Time Capsule for protection of business data. This morning I booted up my MacBook Pro from the external drive using last night's backup made with Carbon Copy Cloner, checked Mail, Opened Safari, opened a cluster of database and word processing files I had updated yesterday and everything worked just fine. I only use one type of back up - incremental, deleting all differences, so I always have a duplicate startup drive. I was interested to see if Super Duper would be quicker, but the software (incremental backup) is disabled until payment is received, whereas Carbon Copy Cloner is fully functional as I believe was the original intent of shareware "try before you buy." Reviews I've read all seem to praise Super Duper, but unless I am missing something, I don't see the benefit to paying more for the same functionality. (Version 2.6.2)

RONL I was using Glimmerblocker, but because it uses a proxy server it increases the overhead for Safari and consequently Safari was sometimes hanging when loading pages. Now I use a userContent.css style sheet for Safari instead of Glimmerblocker. Safari works faster this way and only takes a minute to set up... and of course it is free. Both Safari and Firefox can easily use userContent style sheets via their Preference settings. In Safari simply go to Preferences > Advanced > Style sheet... and select your userContent.css You can find the latest css at: http://www.floppymoose.com (or if MacUpdate deletes this URL do a search using Google for "Better Ad Blocking for Firefox, Mozilla, Camino, and Safari"). I have been using DiskWarrior since it first came out and have been using Macs for over a decade and for around half of that time professionally (i.e. I know how updates work). I would not be without DW, but absolutely dread their updates. Be forewarned that the installation may appear to stall near the end (mine appeared to hang for around 15 minutes when showing in the progress bar that it should have completed in just 2 more minutes). Be patient if this happens and allow it complete. Other wise you may end up with a major problem on your hands. My best guess after using Macs for more than a decade professionally is that this is the standard bug regarding progress bars (i.e Apple's progress bars have been inaccurate very often for a very long time) and that the actual installation has probably not hung. No problems so far with this new version. (Version 10.5.8)

Firefox | Mar 27 2009 |
Not a newbie. It's just that saving a webarchive in Firefox without adding extensions that may or may not work with the next update is not nearly as user friendly as Safari's built in ability. Likewise for increasing text sizes. I realize that your 'car' should not necessarily come with every imaginable option already included. It is just that there are many options that are included (as with OSX in general) that are not automatically included in Firefox or Windows. (Version 3.0.8)
| [ Reply ] | |

Firefox | Mar 27 2009 |
RONL Nice, but without the ability to save a webarchive as a single file (as Safari has done for quite a while) this will only be a backup browser for me. Also Safari allows a user to put buttons in the toolbar to increase/decrease text size WITHOUT having to reach for the keyboard or go to the menubar. This is much quicker when someone browses as many pages with often small print, as I do. Until these two above features are addressed... for me this will always only be a backup. Fortunately recently Firefox has become ICC Version 4 ready (don't recall whether this has only happened in the Firefox 3.1 beta or whether it started with 3.0) but you can check to see if Firefox or any other browser treats ICC profiles correctly by going here... http://www.color.org/version4html.xalter Safari has been compliant for years. FFASS FFASS Previous post had complaints about missing features in Firefox. Must be a newby. The basics: Firefox uses extensions to fill in feature gaps. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Add-ons". Here's what you need: 1) To save full webpages download the extension called "Scrapbook" - it's similar to IE's Scrapbook feature in that it'll save the pages in a list within Firefox. Has ability to save full web pages internally in Folders, while keeping all the links in your saved pages clickable. Be sure to save your Scrapbook to a folder outside of your Firefox Profile folder in case you ever need to delete your profile folder to start fresh with Firefox. I saved my Scrapbook in a folder I named "Firefox Scrapbook" inside of my Documents folder. Note: you'll need to check "Enable Multi-scrapbook" in Scrapbook's options menu to be able to save your Scrapbook to another location. This is a fantastic extension that always works flawlessly for me. 2) To resize the text size, get extension "Zoom Toolbar" - this actually zooms the whole webpage larger, but I actually prefer that to just enlarging the text. After an extremely quick response by the author (Alessandro) my perceived troubles evaporated. This software continues to run circles around the other mouse drivers. Believe me I've tried them. I just tried SteerMouse and it does not compare to USB Overdrive. Often when attempting to see what button I was attempting to map in SM the corresponding button in the SM preference window would not even highlight! And __often__ once I thought I had finally managed to map a button... after a restart or awakening... the mapping would be gone. Also some features were far more limited in what you could map the tilt wheel to do. The mapped commands remain. I've been using this software for many years and should have realized that it must have been something simple to fix and contacted Alessandro before writing my last comment a few days ago. For a long time now (since I visit tvguide.com almost daily) I have been looking for an app that would eliminate their large number of animated ads. The ads slow the loading of course and are extremely distracting. Well... GlimmerBlocker did this right-out-of-the-box! I didn't have to create any settings for it to do this. Another thing... when I have used plugins in the past to block ads sometimes they have either not allowed the site to load properly or it took a long time for the site to load thereby defeating one of the purposes (i.e. to load site more quickly since the animated ads would not need to load). This software at least appears to make sites load much more quickly if they have animated ads (e.g. HULU). I'm connected via cable but it still makes quite a difference when you are checking out many sites very quickly as I often do. Hope this remains as incredible as it appears in my short time of use. And to think that it is freeware! My compliments to the developers! (Version 1.2)

RONL Mutz...I've never had a problem with DF with PS CS2 and 10.5.1 (or prior OS versions). Though I have certainly had some major bugs (that Adobe knows about and has posted) regarding Leopard and CS2 & CS3 Photoshop. I'm currently using DF4.0.1b1. (Version 4.0.1b2)

RONL As with ALL utilities that are able to change your system be VERY careful. Before even thinking about using this also read the reviews at VersionTracker. Many reviewers are not entering stars so the 'star-level' of this app remains unreasonably high. After reading almost all of the reviews on this I would never use this AS YET. I have been working with computers for decades and with Macs for approx. ten years. In all of time I have found that most major system apps (Nortons, etc.) do more harm than good (e.g I have had hard drives go belly up after using some). Since DiskWarrior was released I have found it is the only major system app I need along with Apple's Disk Utility. Of course there are minor utilities that are useful as well (e.g. Leopard Cache Cleaner). But for the most part DW and DU are all you'll ever need. Just be careful... especially when a system utility is at version 1.0. And again... read all or at least most of the reviews here and at VersionTracker before making your decision. (Version 1.0)

RONL Installed iTunes 7.6 first after running DFA and Repairing permissions and while Safe Booted. Then installed QuickTime 7.4 on 10.5.1. If you do the above you should have no problems. It often appears those that don't follow safe installations are the ones that have glitches. (Version 7.4)

HELFIRE Average Joe is supposed to know to repair permissions? and on 10.5 you get kicked out of the finder when it starts installing then it restarts, how are you supposed to follow your directions then? If permissions needed to be repaired apple should do it at the end. BTW: I lost audio on .mov files, nothing seams to bring it back, as have numerous other people. (Version 7.4)

Great app... no question about it. But since I only basically change the default font folder (for the most part) with CB the new combined version is more than I need. Only since Leopard have I found that the default folders have been so bud-ugly (ala OS 7)... that I couldn't take looking at them. For most of my custom folders I just copy/paste. (Version 3.1.2)

RONL The main problem (as others have also noted both here and on VersionTracker) isn't whether the apps are worth it. It is that people are being forced to purchase more than what they want. How do you think people would react if suddenly Adobe said the only way you could purchase Photoshop is if you also purchased Illustrator? I am NOT degrading the applications... just that it was a VERY bad business move to no longer give the users the option to ONLY purchase what they wanted and not be forced to purchase an additional application that they may not want. Don't misunderstand -- we definitely understand where you are coming from! By the same argument, though, Adobe charges a lot of money for Photoshop, and I think a lot of that money goes to the cost of developing features I will never even remotely use or care about in a million years. That said, I would never try asking Adobe to make me a special, half-price version of Photoshop cutting out the handful of features I'll never use -- I just understand that while some features aren't for me, Photoshop on the whole is still a nice, useful program. To boot, I've often wondered "who would ever want this feature?" before, only to find that, after using it, it's invaluable. Even at a $25 upgrade cost, we really think the new features, of which there are many, such as 512x512 icons, full Dock customization, a brand new interface, icon quick look, etc., are well worth it. We hope that anyone who has the opportunity to try the CandyBar 3 demo will agree. (Version 3.1.2)

SOOTHE Cabel, you never heard of Photoshop Elements? It's a cut down version of Photoshop for a lot less money ... (Version 3.1.2)

CandyBar | Jan 11 2008 |
If you feel CandyBar was overpriced when it was set at only $13 (!) -- well, I'd say it's probably not the program for you. I can't imagine what price you think it should be! There's literally no way we could price a piece of software at less than $13 and keep it active, constantly updated with new versions and new features, fully supported, etc. My apologies. (Also, keep in mind: it is no longer "just a freakin' icon changer". We didn't want to raise the price without adding significant value to the program, new features, and great functionality, like Dock changing, large icon support, icon organizing, etc.) It's a good point about Photoshop Elements. But it's a lot easier to develop and support two separate versions of an application at once when you're a huge company like Adobe -- and when your "cut-down" version costs $99! :) (Version 3.1.2)

BRUCE_Y I bought Pixadex and CandyBar as separate apps a while back. I have used Pixadex a fair amount, though not regularly. I bought it because IconBox was discontinued, and I wanted a supported app to store and access my icons. I have used CandyBar maybe two times in as many years. Now along comes CandyBar 3, which requires (a) Leopard, (b) more money. It kind of leaves me out in the cold, because I don't have Leopard (no rush for the .0 or even .1 OS), and I don't fancy the rather steep price to upgrade when it seems all their effort went into the Leopard-only CandyBar. The app that I really want/use is the Pixadex. Make it Tiger compatible (OK to have some features reserved for Leopard only), and lower the upgrade price, and i'd jump on it. Perhaps I will change my mind about CandyBar when I do get around to Leopard, since Apple in their own bizarre fashion have decided to downgrade all folder icons to a design that is almost impossible to tell them apart (What Were They Thinking - or Not Thinking more likely). RONL You appear to have missed my basic point. Adding an app to another app is not a good business move. The developer is attempting to make people purchase more than what they may (do) want from all of the feedback on both MU and VersionTracker. (Version 3.1.2)

RONL I'm aware of the combining of two apps. But when I want Photoshop Adobe doesn't require me to also purchase Illustrator. Very dumb move for the developer which I'm sure they should know by the enormous number of people here and at VersionTracker that have also said they have priced themselves out of the market. RONL It seems many other people have had major run-ins with this developer also. Read this page regarding attacks and copyright infringement: http://www.digg.com/apple/What_is_Rixstep_doing_to_Stepwise I certainly would not trust typing in your admin password into an app this developer had created. Make sure you read the above page (URL) before even thinking about using this app. There may be a reason that it's free and that he wants you to use it. (Version 1.8.1)

AERGERN If Adobe merged all the functions of PS and IA then you can bet you'd pay more.. and while this is a silly analogy at best all I can say is you don't know what your missing with this app and if you don't want to buy it then change your icons manually, write your own db for your icons and replace your dock resources by hand. It's quite simple. Also, Panic can't price themselves out any market as there isn't another app that does all it does. There are free icon changers and I've tried them all .. they suckkkkk.. AERGERN RonL, I do understand what you're saying .. you wanted the single function app at the same price and they're not giving you what YOU want. I however owned both Pixedex and Candybar .. with upgrade discounts I paid barely anything for my upgrade. Candybar 3 is a better app then either CB2 or Pixedex. If you bought CB2 then you get a discount which amounts to $6 more then CB2 costs. That's not a horrible deal. You're also free not to purchase it. I can respect you sticking to your guns and not buying CB3 .. but don't dis the new app as this app is BETTER then either of it's two previous parts and there are a lot of us who are glad they did this. Help will tell you how to set up a VERY secure, and VERY quick to open... i.e. literally a few seconds DMG. The encrypted DMGs can be easily set for sizes from MBs to GBs in size. VERY easy (no tech-savy needed) with either 128 or 256 bit encryption. (Version 1.0.5)
