DiskWarrior | Nov 26 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK I just purchased the latest version to solve problems with a fragmented directory (catalog b-tree) after a crash that Fink Commander was involved in. My problem is that I run DiskWarrior for a couple of days (to try to solve the issuie above). DiskWarrior reports from the very beginning that it is taking a performance hit because of the condition of the HD, which is understandable, but Finder starts reporting that DiskWarrior is unresponsive and the whole OS (Tiger) seems to be taking a hit on my G5 single. Ejecting USB pen drives are no longer registered by the system, quiting any other apps that have been running leaves me unable to get DiskWarrior back to DW, which seems to take on the persona of the last app that has been quit, etc. I am running DW from a system installed on a Firewire drive. ROADTRIPDK I haven't used this app yet as I am wondering what the bugs in the G5 thermal control are (OS X - not the app) that are mentioned in the read ReadMe file are all about: "Some users of G5 systems have reported that the fans ramp up very fast. This is not related to AppleJack, but is due to the fact that the thermal controllers are not loaded while in single user mode. If this condition persists after restarting into Mac OS X, you may have run into one of the many known fan-management bugs. See the apple.com support forums, or macosxhints.com for extensive postings on this topic." OK, there may be extensive postings on the issue, but why not try to be a little more specific? I have a G5 single with major problems with the HD. I don't want to have to fuddle around with more issues than I already have got. (Version 1.4.3)

KLKTRK Perhaps because the issue with the fans is a bit of a moving target, with some models responding better to certain methods than others. Rather than try to be pre-emptively exhaustive, perhaps the author is veering on the side of caution in providing a flexible answer that can adapt to the many issues reported out there instead of answering definitively and then being inundated with "hey, this didn't work! on my Mac ? with 10.4.x and nnn mg of RAM, build version xxxxx and EFI firmware version...." He is not obligated to offer support for an issue that is properly Apple's. (Version 1.4.3)

ROADTRIPDK I just installed evolution from the Novell homepage (evolution 2.6). I can't get the Evolution droplet to work. The Evolution binary is installed in /opt/gnome-2.14/bin/ and I think the droplet may be looking Evolution in /sw/bin/ When I run the command '/opt/gnome-2.14/bin/evolution-start.sh' to determine why Evolution doesn't start, I get the following messages: $ /opt/gnome-2.14/bin/evolution-start.sh (evolution-2.6:5663): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "industrial", (evolution-2.6:5663): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "industrial", (evolution-2.6:5663): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "industrial", CalDAV Eplugin starting up ... evolution-shell-Message: Killing old version of evolution-data-server... ROADTRIPDK I can't figure out how to enable dialing a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone from the app. I keep getting the message that the "selected modem port is currently not available". What do I need to do to enable it? I have gone through the OS X network setup wizard and it expects that I want to dial-up my ISP through my mobile phone, which isn't the case. I know my Bluetooth works as I often sync between my phone and my G5. (Version 3.5.1)

ROADTRIPDK I can understand limiting what a shareware app is allowed to do in trial mode, but you can't even see and fiddle around with the preferences to see if you would want to pay for this! I think a lot of users like to "trial run" an app before they pay. A new user can only get a vague idea of what CuteClips is all about. (Version 2.0)

Little Snitch | Jun 15 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK I am getting a warning from Little Snitch everytime I start DockFun! The error refers to "DockInsteminator", but there are a number of users that have searched for "DockInsteminator" by name and by PID#. The Dock PID# doesn't seem to match the alert. The number listed (in parenthesis) after "DockInsteminator" also changes if DockFun! has been quit and then restarted during a user login. At this time, I am still using Little Snitch on a trial basis. It would be nice to get cleared up what is going on here. (Version 1.2.3)

I got the same message from Little Snitch. What's your point? I checked with Spotlight, and I launched the Activity Monitor. I could not find "DockInsteminator" by name or by PID#. Even the Dock PID# doesn't match the alert. All I can find in "All Processes" is: Googling DockInseminator found me nothing except your comment here. In other words, I can not find any other reference to this app online. Do you know something we don't? How about some specifics. What does this have to do with DockFun! ?? (Version 4.7)

DockFun! | Jun 14 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK Yup, same here. Interestingly, the PID# seems to change everytime that Little Snitch prompts with the warning, if you have allowed DockInseminator to perform its thing earlier during a session. My point is that I was hoping someone more knowledgeable that could elucidate a little on this issue or that the developer might react. There have been complaints in connection with other products by this developer about lack of response. I don't know how serious this issue is, but if nothing else the posting could be a warning to others, before they purchase (Version 4.7)

Butler | Jun 7 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK First impressions are extremely positive. Here is a wish list based on my impressions: 1) The ability to nest both Apple (Bluetooth, Airport, Display, Keyboard input method) and third-party (DockFun, Alarm Clock 2, Amnesty, Sticky Windows) in groups under one menu item to save some menu real estate. 2) More bookmark management abilities, such as the ability to use one set of bookmarks (Safari or Firefox) as default and to sync or modify the other sets (Camino, Opera, Shiira) to look the same/contain the same bookmarks in the same places. 3) Ability to manage news, RSS and Atom bookmarks from Viena or RSSOwl. 4) Ability to bookmark non-Internet related items such as in Halon. 5) The ability to switch on or off viewing containers in nested (hierarchical) view from the menu bar. Absolutely a must have utility. (Version 4.1.2)

Bookdog | Jun 2 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK Great potential. Personally, my biggest beef is that Bookdog verifies by searching for the full path and not the domain (root) URL. There are a lot of commercial sites out there that use some sort of script when accessing the site. An example is amazon.com where you go to the root URL and the site loads a script so that the URL no longer reflects the root URL. Bookdog isn't sensitive to this and when completing verification wants to change the bookmark URL to reflect the script based URL. This is BAD for sites where the script URL changes often or each time you visit. The bookmark no longer reflects the domain (root) URL and you are forced to enter it manually and change the bookmark back to the "correct" domain URL. (Version 3.6)

ROADTRIPDK Wow. Thanks Carlos. I just tried this on Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.9.3) in Tiger and it worked like a charm!!! I second the motion for a similar utility for other Apple apps. Very strange with Apple's inconsistent user interface look. They have always been the most consistent OS interface maintainer, but with OS X, they seem as if they can't find the right direction. First Aqua, then brushed metal and Unify. Keep up the good work Carlos. (Version 2.1)

ROADTRIPDK Fantastic is the only word for this app. I like the idea of being able to play songs from iTunes, but it would be nice if the extra alarms for AC didn't have to be imported into iTunes to be used by the app. This is a bit irritating in my opinion. (Version 2.3.1)

Alarm Clock | Jun 2 2006 |
ROBBIEHANSON15 I understand what you're saying. It annoys some people to have to add the sample alarms to the iTunes library, and it doesn't bother other people at all. I've been struggling with what to do about this problem for a while. I could easily integrate the sample alarms into the application. The only problem is that if I do this I turn a little 1.5 Mb app into a 6 Mb app. It's not like it would take up any more space in RAM, but some people appreciate the faster download of a small app, and like that it doesn't take up much disc space. I've created a poll here on MacUpdate to try to get people's opinion on the matter. Thank you for your thoughts on the subject. (Version 2.3.1)

Sticky Windows | Jun 1 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK I am in general very pleased with this app. One thing that I would like to see however, is the ability of setting some of the apps that boot at login directly to a specified tab area for startup apps. This would be great for apps (with low overhead) like PandoCalendar that I have set to start at login, so that they can be referenced whenever the need arises, but you don't really want them taking up desktop real estate. I am still running in demo mode, but will probably purchase this app. (Version 1.2.1)

Apple Pages | May 29 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK I will never understand why Apple decided to stop developing Apple Works and Claris HomePage and then start all over again with the so called iLife and iWork suites. Both Pages and iWeb have serious inconsistencies and problems. Pages ignores the language specified in the Spelling window and uses the language settings from the "More" tab in the Inspector panel. This is a gross inconsistency with the normal user interface and therefore third party spelling apps like cocoAspell can't hook in properly, unless (maybe) you are using the same language as listed in the inspector panel. This also rules out use of right to left input spell checking for languages like Hebrew, Arabic and Farsi. Weird. (Version 2.0.1v2)

ROADTRIPDK Interesting app. Looks like a more mature version of Journler (free). I have been looking at the default set of docs, but can't find any reference to what those "action items" are. Also, no info on creating "To Do's" and if Mori patches into iCal and Address Book. Not all of the links seem to be working in the default set of docs either, but I guess that is because this is a beta version? (Version 1.2b2)

Calendar X | May 28 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK Absolutely fantastic piece of software. I do have a couple of comments though: 1) It would be nice to be able to resize the entire app by dragging a corner to make it incrementally larger or smaller, like in PandoCalendar. 2) The Islamic calendar is a little weak, only providing Ramadan and Eid. 3) It would be nice if the calendar automatically made solar declination adjustments for low and high latitudes (I may be wrong about this). 4) The FAQ on the website mentions use of the system address book for compatibility (instead of Calendar 2000 format) but I can't find any working page on the site (a lot of site links produce errors) that explains where and how Address Book is used. 5) We can all agree that iCal lacks a lot of features, but it still would be nice if Calendar X hooked into iCal so that there was one place (Calendar X) that users entered their To Do's and Events (again, this issue could be covered in the website, but as there are a lot of pages that return errors, it is hard to tell). Don't be fooled by the above issues. This is a great app and is in the process of maturing. (Version 10.2.7)

Drop Drawers X | May 25 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK Great app. It has been a while since I used it last, but as soon as I took a look at it, I had to start using it again. I particularly the launcher drawers that you can create for all of those app that you can't or don't want on the Apple dock, but still want quick access to. Two things would be nice for the future: 1) That a copy of a file dragged to a drawer is created instead of only an alias. Most people have plenty of HD space. 2) The possibility of setting the preferences of each drawer as to whether clicking an item once or twice launches the item. Launcher drawers should be automatically set to launch items with one click so they are treated similarly to the way the Dock treats apps. (Version 1.6.6)

Daylite Productivity Suite | May 23 2006 |
ROADTRIPDK DayLite looks like what I want, but the interface is confusing, the Mail.app plug-in installer freezes, the license is quite expensive when compared with Chronos SOHO Suite and the company behind DayLite apparently thinks they can charge for some of their support for the product, although e-mail support seems to be free of charge. Apparently, the Mail.app plug-in did install. After I got rid of all of the DayLite bits I could find, the Mail.app plug-in prompts me to start DayLite. Where does this plug-in reside, so I can trash it? (Version 3.0.2)

Some of these apps are Opera, Email Effects, MacTracker X, Pac the Man, etc. I am also having problems downloading both Fire and FinkCommander in Safari 2.0.2. Clicking on "download now" returns a blank page, whereas control-clicking and choosing "download linked file" just downloads a .gif file that is 43 bytes. The same happens if i option-click. This may or may not be a MacUpdate matter as there is talk about a download page and not an issue with the app itself. (Version 4.2.3b1)
